9 The effect of Cued Speech on story retelling in late implanted pre-lingual hearing impaired students Shokoofeh Mirza-aghabeyk 1, Guita Movallali*. 2, Mohammad Taheri, 3 Mahnaz Esteki, 1 1- Department of Psychology &Educational of Exceptional children, Azad University, Tehran, IRAN 2- Correspondent Author: Pediatric Neurorehabilitation Research Center, University of Social Welfare & Rehabilitation Sciences (USWR), Tehran, IRAN. drgmovallali@gmail.com Tel: Department of Psychology & Education of Education of Exceptional Children, Zemestan.Man@Hotmail.Com,Tel: ,University of Social Welfare & Rehablitation Sciences(USWR),Tehran accepted: 28 July 2014 Abstract Background & Aim: Cued Speech makes the perception of speech easier and improves the lipreading ability and use of residual hearing. The purpose of current study was to assess the effectiveness of using Cued Speech on story retelling as the rehabilitation tool for the late cochlear implanted pre-lingual hearing impaired students. Method: This has been an experimental study and pre-test, post- test plan. Nine prelingually hearing impaired students who were late cochlear implanted and were between the ages of 11 and 16 years and 9 months from Loghman Cochlear implant center were selected by available methods. Our tool was story telling test. The Persian Cued Speech training program was carried out for 8 weeks in sixteen 60-minutes sessions. In this study we have used Z-test and t-test for dependent groups. Results: Results revealed after Persian Cued Speech intervention all the narrative macrostructure (Topic maintenance, Event Sequencing, Main information) (P<0/01) and microstructure (Referencing (P<0/05), Mean Length of Utterances (P<0/01)) items were significantly improved. There were no significant differences in two of microstructure items (Conjunction Cohesion, Syntax Complexity). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that using Cued Speech for the late cochlear implanted prelingually hearing impaired students can improve story retelling abilities and be used in the rehabilitation programs for these groups.
