1 Atascocita High School Atascocita High School-White LGI Tyran Lee, ASL Teacher Dannette Lira-Anderson, ASL Teacher American Sign Language I Course Description: This course introduces the student to basic knowledge about American Sign Language. Course includes sign vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers and expressive and receptive signing activities as well as history of ASL and becoming knowledgeable of aspects of Deaf Culture which an integral part of meaningful language use. Beginning level communication competence and mimic natural conversation in ASL. ASL Classroom Expectation: The skills to be developed in this class depend on visual perception and visual memory. The use of auditory clues as an instruction inhibits this learning process for the person speaking and for those who are distracted by that person s voice. In a true cross-cultural experience between those who are Deaf and those who are Hearing, it is important to respect a Deaf person s position on the discriminatory use of voice in his/her presence. 2 Course Objectives: In this course, the students will acquire the following areas: receptive/expressive skills in ASL facial expressions/body language in ASL conversing familiar signs in ASL various issues in the deaf culture and ASL speed/clarity of brief conversations in ASL grammatical structures in ASL history of deaf education through ASL Teacher: Lectures presented by teacher and guest speakers Activities: Classroom practice and use of ASL Discussion presented about Deaf-related information (Culture, History, Education, Physical Aspects, etc.) Presentations to expressively demonstrate ASL skill level Glosses (written translations) Interaction with Deaf/HH people Evaluations receptive, expressive, and written Grading: **CAB, Warm ups, Homework, and Quizzes...40% **Tests and Projects...60% There are 14 formative and 4 summative each in 9 weeks. The student is responsible for reading the lesson plans on the board and getting the assignments and responsible for having all the lesson plans and assignments written in their notebook. Teacher will not remind students of their assignments and lesson plans.

3 Late Work: Formative and Summative that is graded: On time: full credit 1 day late: max of 80 2 days late: max of 60 3 days late: max of 40 4 days late: max of 20 5 days late: 0 Most work will be done or partially completed in class. Students may, on occasion, need to complete work at home. Preparation for presentations and evaluations will be done on the student s time, although there will be time in class for initial preparations. The student is responsible for reading the lesson plans on the board and handout in their notebook. Discipline: I follow the Student Handbook for violations of school or district rules. For day-to-day infractions, I prefer to talk privately with the student first. If that is not sufficient, I will contact a parent/guardian for help in resolving the situation. If is still continues, it will be necessary for me to involve an administrator to help me develop a better approach to the situation. I have discussed my expectations with the students: Classroom Policy/Culturally Appropriate Behavior Culturally Appropriate Behavior is important in this class because you need to learn how to show proper respect for the people of diversity cultures and culture that use ASL. You will be grade daily for CAB s class daily grade. You will rate yourself and your test will rate you as well. There are 4 CAB rules which are: 1. Respect 2. Eye Contact 3. Participation 4. No Voice 5. Performance. ATTENDANCE- Most of the learning takes place in the class with practice. PARTICIPATION- This includes active involvement in the class activities and appropriate behavior during activities (all students start with a 100% participation grade, lack of participation results in lowered grade).

4 SUPPORT OF FELLOW STUDENTS- All students are expected and required to respect all members of the class. They shall be supportive and refrain from rude behavior. (This is a safe place to try something new and different!) NO GUM CHEWING- It distorts the face and ASL grammar is all facial. Points will be taken off your daily and summative grades. Tutoring: I will make arrangements for students who are having difficulty. With prior arrangements the students can come for help before and after school and during activity period. Students must sign up for tutoring. The minimum expectation for tutoring is 30 minutes sessions per week. If needed more time, make arrangement with your teacher. Conference: Please me to set up a teacher/parents conference time and date. My conference time is during 6 th period. ASL is a unique class.
