1 Pierce College ASL & 121: American Sign Language I World Languages Instructor: Stacy Lewis salewis@pierce.ctc.edu Class hours/room: Puyallup AAH-136 Quarter/dates: 9/22/14-12/8/14 Fall 2014 Mondays and Wednesdays 2:30pm-4:40pm Item number: 8477 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In ASL 121, the student is introduced to the basic grammatical structure of the language, begins developing receptive and expressive signing skills, and is introduced to the deaf culture. The student will begin to incorporate non-manual signals and use non-manual grammatical markers with both yes/no questions and basic wh questions. In addition to learning the history of how ASL began, the student will learn about deaf culture, TTY s, Video Phones, and the Washington State Relay system. The student is also introduced to the educational system including mainstreaming, WSD and Gallaudet University. 5 credit hours. PREREQUISITE(S): None COURSE OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Show awareness of and respect for Deaf culture. 2. Use appropriate non-manual behavior markers for different types of sentences. 3. Each will have two parts: Receptive portion: The instructor will sign some sentence/questions for your Unit 1&2 Receptive Test and Unit 3&4 Recpetive Test, and you write the answer down on your test paper using CANVAS at given date during the class. Expressive portion: You and your partner will sign a teacher-assigned dialogue for your Unit 1-4 Dialogue Expressive Test and will be evaluated during class. Written portion on the final exam based on Unit 1-4 Student Workbook: involving, but not limited to, multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blanks, and essays. Be on time for each exam. If you come in late, quietly take a seat and begin on whichever part instructor is on. Questions that you miss, because of your being late, will count against you. Assignments: Student Workbook These assignments are CRITICAL in helping you remember what you have learned and will greatly help you in learning ASL as a second language. As we complete each unit, you will be posting your workbook assignment on Word document on CANVAS at due date. No late assignments are accepted for any reason. Anything But Silent The questions for this book are located on-line. Please bring a print out of the questions by the 3 rd day of class. On the day of the discussion, two things will happen you will need to independently answer a few questions on your own and posting your workbook assignment on Word document on CANVAS at due date, and you will participate in an in-class discussion about the questions from the homework. You need to be present to do either of these activities (for any reason). This is found on your Signing Naturally DVD (SN DVD) at the end of each unit. It s listed as VR (vocabulary review). On-line, you will find the whole list of vocabulary words taught in ASL 121. Please make your own copy and bring it to class by the 3 rd day.

4 Copy-sign Activity You will complete 1 copy-sign activities. The first one is The Riddle located on-line in ASL 121. This one you will complete on your own and videotaped. It is advised that you will need to watch them numerous times to learn the nuances, the various NMS, and memorize the exact story sequence. I will review this activity with you about 2 weeks before it is due. It needs to be memorized (no notes or visual cues allowed). The goal is to replicate the story exactly paying attention to the sequence, the NMS, and spatial location. Lab report: Criteria Do one movie report. Movies made by ASL Films will be shown during class and the lab report will be due within one week of showing the movie. Format of your ASL121 Movie/Book Critique Your movie/book critique should follow this format strictly as follows: Format of report: BOLD the titles below before you type your statements in non-bold style. Last Name, First Name ASL 121 Lab# Name of ASL Instructor: Date: Title of movie: Please list 3 facts from the movie that has had an impact on you where it can be related to Deaf culture issues and language as opposed to what you are accustomed in your culture and language. For each fact, 1) write the topic in 4 words or less and 2) describe the impact/differences in paragraph format (not just one sentence). Finally, write in paragraph format your opinion/perspective on all the 3 facts you ve listed. DO NOT just write a story of what the movie is about. Criteria: limited to one page must be typed, 1.5 or double spaced no summary of narration no listing of new signs you learned late reports will NOT be accepted On-line information On the first day of class, I will explain how to access this information. By the 3 rd day of class, you would be able to know how to have access to all information for the quarter. Here is the link: User name: Password:

5 Practice Logs The practice log needs to be individually typed. There are many activities to be done outside of class, plus quite a bit of vocabulary to learn and review. Everyone is required to practice at least 2 times a week (30 minutes each) with someone from class. In the log, mention the type of signing activities you did, who you practiced with and how long you practiced. Try to make this is a no voice practice time beginning with 1-5 minutes and increase to minutes a session by the end of the quarter. Include one short paragraph for each practice session. You can also include feedback of any thoughts about how the sessions are progressing. Only logs that focus on learning activities are accepted no games or just chatting. In (parenthesis) is the total practice sessions required for full credit. There is no set format for the practice log Date: Oct. 5 Who: Jin, Nick, Mario No-Voice time: 5 minutes practicing names and numbers Activities: We practiced fingerspelling the names of classmates and signing yes/no questions from 2.1. Also practiced cardinal numbers from 2.2 and talked about the reading from 2.1 on Gallaudet college. Feedback: Fingerspelling is getting a little easier. Numbers are still difficult. EVALUATION METHODS Tests (Receptive, Expressive, and Written) 80% SWB Homework Anything But Silent Copy-sign Activity Lab Report 20% Practice Logs Grading scale: = A (4.0) = A ( ) = B+ ( ) = B ( ) = B- ( ) = C + ( ) = C ( ) = C ( ) = D+ ( ) = D ( ) 64 0 = fail (0.0) FOR YOUR INFORMATION: The instructor will evaluate your skills through the use of quizzes and tests. It is important for you to understand that grades are weighted. Expressive and receptive skills are primary areas and your ability to produce and understand ASL will be weighted more heavily than written assignments. Student disposition and attitude does count. It is impossible to make grading language proficiency completely objective. Final grades will be influenced by sign production, comprehension, attitude and disposition. Last Day to Drop Course: See the Fall 2014 schedule of classes for last day to drop or withdraw. COURSE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

6 1. No Voicing: You are now in ASL 1. You should be LOOKING FOR opportunities to sign as much as you can with me and with others. If at any time you do not understand what is being taught or signed, please raise your hand and ask- Take charge of your own understanding! In addition, when you are coming in class, it must be absolutely full ASL zone. 2. Cell Phones: No texting during class. Cell phones need to be completely turned off (silent) and in put away during class. If you have a family emergency, let me know before class, and you may leave your cell on the table in front of you. Please leave the room if your emergency call comes in. 3. Attendance/Participation: Class attendance is CRITICAL. This will greatly affect the final grade, so students are cautioned to minimize class absences. After the 2 absences, the final grade will be lowered by one letter grade for each additional absence. For example: If your made A+, your final grade will be B+. It is necessary for students to attend all their classes and complete outside assignments since language learning is performance-based. Three tardies will be counted as one absence. *Fifteen minutes or more of being late will be recorded as one tardy. Students may request consideration for absences in writing as soon as reasonably possible (preferably before the absence). An adequate and documented reason for an absences may be excused or not at the instructor's discretion. Adequate reasons include circumstances beyond the student's control, such as personal illness, critical illness or death in the immediate family, or participation in an approved University activity. Traffic delays (or tickets), difficult find a parking spot, sickness not requiring a doctor's visit, family responsibilities, vacation trips, and so forth, do not count. 4. Assignment Completion: All homework is due at the beginning of the class. If you are absent that day, you may it to me BEFORE the class hour begins for full credit. Any assignment missed due to an absence must be handed in the next class. Late homework is not accepted; however, students may request consideration to submit late homework. The request must be in writing in advance or as close as reasonably possible to the assignment due date. Adequate and documented reasons may be approved or not at the instructor's discretion. Adequate reasons involve circumstances beyond the student's control, such as personal illness, critical illness or death in the immediate family, or participation in an approved University activity. 5. Student will be held responsible for their conduct during class and for the work they submit, as outlined in the Pierce College student handbook, which prohibits cheating and plagiarism, disruptive behavior during class (interrupting others; speaking out of turn, and coming to class under influence of illegal drugs and alcohol). Case will be assessed on an individual basis and turned over to the Student Conduct Committee or to the Vice President of Student Services if necessary. 6. Students with disabilities who believe they may need academic adjustments, auxiliary aids or services to fully participate in course activities or meet course requirements are encouraged to register with the Access and Disability Services (ADS) Office. Students requesting accommodations must obtain the "Approved Quarterly Academic Adjustments, Auxiliary Aids or Services Green Form" provided by ADS.
