1 Course Title: ASL II Instructor Name: Hope Star La Conner High School Course Title: American Sign Language II-A Meeting Times: 55 minutes, 4-5 X per week, 18 weeks (1 semester) Course Description American Sign Language taught in an interactive high school setting. Focus on conversational skills and vocabulary building through sharing information in a wider array of situations, to further develop their language fluency and to advance their level of comprehension of ASL in culturally appropriate ways. Grammar use in conversation context, with support strategies to improve conversation interaction, will help students develop skills in ASL syntax. According to the Standards for Foreign Language Learning provided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ATFL), all the linguistic and social knowledge required for effective human-to-human interaction is encompassed in those ten words Knowing how, when and why to say what to whom. Formerly, most teaching in foreign language classrooms concentrated on the how (grammar) to say what (vocabulary). While these components of language are indeed crucial, the current organization principal for foreign language study is communication, which highlights the why, the whom, and the when. The ASL II curriculum lessons and activities are designed to help the language classroom and the language program meet the five areas of Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities recommended by ACTFL. Topics include; Deaf culture, ASL vocabulary, perspective, grammar, history, fingerspelling, numbers, and terminology. This class is an immersion class to develop skills in communication using ASL, thus the class and many of the dialogs within the classroom will be done utilizing voice off. Learning to communicate using body language, gestures, facial expressions, and signs is critical to both comprehension and expressive skills in American Sign Language. Course Objectives Students will learn to appreciate and respect ASL as an unique and naturally-occurring language, and recognize Deaf people as a community with their own set of cultural traditions and values. Students will become familiar with Deaf Culture, history and community as well as develop conversation skills in ASL. Learning Outcomes Students will utilize the appropriate vocabulary, grammar and social behaviors by demonstrating their knowledge of topics covered in class using specific language and grammar constructions. 1
