1 Cultural Bridges to College: Mapping Pathways to College in Families Home Nancy Trinh, Kim Tsai, and Catherine R. Cooper (2007). Department of Psychology, University of California, Santa Cruz (Please address correspondence to This project is designed to map families home languages, collect resources about pathways to college in these languages, and make these materials available at no cost to families and partnerships. According to the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964, each state is required to collect and report on the family languages of students who speak a language other than English at home. We obtained this information from state Department of Education websites or through telephone contact. Across six states (Arizona, California, Hawaii, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Rhode Island), we identified 150 languages and collected materials in 19 languages besides English (See Table 1). The importance of retaining home languages has been documented in much research. When parents cannot speak to their children because of a language barrier, they cannot convey their values, beliefs, understanding, and wisdom. Rifts can develop and families can lose the intimacy that comes from shared beliefs and understandings (Wong Fillmore, 1991). In contrast, materials in families home languages can support the intergenerational project of building pathways to college and cultural identities. Immigrant students who successfully build these pathways often name parents as their top resources (Cooper, Chavira, & Mena, 2005). We welcome your suggestions for additional resources.
