3 Introduction Certificate III in Auslan is the second of four qualifications within the Certificates in Auslan curriculum. The Certificates in Auslan are accredited, nationally recognised qualifications, which teach the language of the Australian Deaf community, Auslan (Australian Sign Language). The certificates also include units on the unique culture, history and values of the Deaf community. Vocational outcomes: People who achieve Certificate III in Auslan have a variety of pathway options they may pursue. Such pathways include: Undertaking further study to attain Certificate IV in Auslan (22078VIC). Gaining employment within the Deaf community where Auslan skills are required or would support the role. Working within the wider community where Auslan skills would provide a basic access to information for deaf people. This course has an educational outcome for participants who require more extensive training in order to communicate with members of the Deaf community at a higher level than offered by the Certificate II in Auslan. At this level, this course teaches participants how to give routine information in Auslan in a number of contexts, identify the principles and characteristics of Auslan signs, and describe generally the cultural and historical trends and issues of the Deaf community. Units of competency summaries There are six units of competency that make up the delivery of the Certificate III in Auslan (22077VIC). VU20235 Use routine Auslan for employment purposes VU20236 Use routine Auslan for learning purposes VU20237 Use routine Auslan for personal purposes VU20238 Use routine Auslan for social and community purposes VU20239 Identify issues in Australian Deaf history VU20240 Analyse the structure of signs in Auslan D-010 Certificate III in Auslan s1 V2.docx Version of 9 Updated: March 2017
4 Entry requirements The entry requirement for Certificate III in Auslan is recent successful completion of Certificate II or equivalent competency at that level. Students can present for assessment at any time for demonstrated equivalence in Auslan skills and can gain credit for entry requirements at any level through RPL. For more information, please see the RPL & Credit Transfer Policy. These competencies may have been acquired through work experience, community involvement and/or previous education and training. There is no limit to enrolment in this course in terms of an individual s age (over 14years and 9months), gender, social or educational background providing the minimum entry level is achieved. The student must also be able to competently use a computer and have access to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint programs. Students should be aware they will need to have or develop the skills to interact with an internet online learning platform, including filming and uploading videos and assessments. Each student should also be able to use time management strategies in order to meet assessment deadlines. Upon completion of a qualification in Auslan, there are a range of options open to graduates across a number of vocations. Auslan is fast becoming an essential or desirable skill for employment and many graduates opt to go on to study our Diploma of Interpreting. Students of our Diploma of Interpreting gain the skills to facilitate communication between Auslan and English in the Australian community. To read more on Auslan interpreting, please have a look at the ASLIA NSW website: D-010 Certificate III in Auslan s1 V2.docx Version of 9 Updated: March 2017
5 Auslan Only Weekend The Auslan Only Weekend (AOW) is a no-voice, fully catered, Auslan getaway organised by The Deaf Society and hosted by a team of deaf people. This award-wining program will inspire, challenge and motivate you. What s included as part of your course fees? 2 nights share accommodation at the venue (see venue details below) 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 1 dinner Morning and afternoon tea throughout your stay Unlimited tea, coffee and hot chocolate All workshops and activities The AOW Team Our Auslan Only Team is made up of trainers and volunteers from the Deaf Community. Our team members look forward to helping you expand your vocabulary, recognise different signing styles and most of all become more confident in your signing ability. The AOW experience The AOW experience is something truly unique. You will spend a whole weekend communicating only in this visual and highly-engaging language. Previous participants have said: Complete immersion was brilliant, I feel more comfortable signing and understanding others, It was a real experience of a voice off environment You will: Meet and learn from a variety of deaf presenters & team members Use Auslan in a friendly and supportive environment Learn new Auslan vocabulary Experience total immersion in a deaf social environment Increase your confidence in using Auslan Venues for Semester1, 2017 The AOW will be held in three separate locations / dates to ensure all students have an opportunity to attend one of the weekends. You will be asked at the beginning of semester which of the three you would like to attend. Central Coast, Toukley 5-7 May, 2017 Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops 2-4 June, 2017 Lake Ainsworth, Lennox Heads June, 2017 D-010 Certificate III in Auslan s1 V2.docx Version of 9 Updated: March 2017
6 Auslan Only Events Auslan Only Events are held throughout the course and are designed to give you a voiceoff experience outside the classroom. Events will be organised and advertised well in advance. Students who take a lead in organising events can also earn hours towards their Community Contact Journals. Auslan Only Events are a great opportunity for students to mingle outside the classroom and also meet and interact with members of the Deaf Community. Community Contact Journals An important part of learning any language is access to native speakers. While you have access to a limited number of Deaf people in your class time, it s important that you also see how other Deaf people sign, and seek opportunities to use your Auslan skills to converse with them. It is therefore a requirement of this course that you have a minimum number of Community Contact hours with the Deaf Community i.e. watching Auslan used in a natural environment and practicing your Auslan skills with Deaf people. There are 25 Community Contact hours for Certificate III in Auslan. For more information about the Community Contact Journal, please see the Community Contact Journal Guide and Template on Moodle in the Orientation section.
