1 Introduction This booklet is designed to provide those who are delivering the awareness session on Noise at work with some basic guidance on the key points that need to be discussed during the session to ensure that all participants come away with sufficient knowledge and understanding of the topic. As part of the program, the centre has produced a large number of awareness materials which can be used for training purposes. Title Noise at Work Comments Objectives Provide supervisors with a basic understanding of the topic and what their role is Evaluation Short quiz at the end of the presentation Facilitators are encouraged to update the quiz to reflect their own specific workplace and procedures Facilitator requirements The session should be delivered by an OSH professional or a person with a good understanding of Occupational Noise at work and the entity, s OSH MS The facilitator should have sufficient experience in delivering Training / Awareness presentations Equipment Duration Changes/ Updates Laptop / Projector Hearing protection (ear muffs, ear plugs, semi-inserts, canal caps) Flip Chart Two hours Facilitators are encouraged to add additional information to the presentation to reflect their own individual situation or procedures The following pages will go through each of the individual slides and identify key messages and issues that the facilitator should ensure are discussed during the awareness session. Facilitators are encouraged to reflect their own specific procedures and requirements during the presentation to ensure that those attending are aware of their role and the actions that are required of them with regards to Noise at Work.
2 Slide 1 - Objectives Introduce yourself as the facilitator Brief safety induction if required Talk through each of the objectives identified Discussion Point: Ask all participants their current understanding of the subject and what they hope to learn from the awareness session. Record this information on a flip chart to discuss at the end of the session. Inform them there is a test at the end of the presentation! Slide 2 Introduction Talk through the text within the slide, ensure that all attendees are aware of the scale of the issue of NIHL Statistic is from the World Health Organization Slide 3 What is Noise? Talk through each of the points ensure that attendees are aware of the fact that noise is everywhere Home Work Slide 4 What is Noise? Go through the different levels of noise shown on the slide Identify situations where it can be noisy without people realizing normal traffic on the road can be around 75dB. If available show them the noise levels for the room in which the awareness session is being undertaken. Use a handheld noise meter or if not available a free app can be downloaded from for both Apple and Android devices. (OSHAD does not recommend or take any responsibility for the content or use of third party applications. The use of the third-party software is done at your own discretion and risk and with agreement that you will be solely responsible for any damage to your computer system or loss of data that results from such activities. You are solely responsible for adequate protection and backup of the data and equipment used in connection with any of the software, and OSHAD will not be liable for any damages that you may suffer connection with downloading, installing, using, modifying or distributing such software. No advice or information, whether oral or written, obtained by you from OSHAD or from this document shall create any warranty for the software.) Explain the effects of Noise as identified on the slide Total Time 8 minutes
3 Slide 5 Exposure to Noise Discuss each of the identified points Explain that hearing loss cannot be restored permanent damage Discussion Point: Ask participants if anyone has suffered from or knows anyone who has suffered from hearing loss. Ask them to explain the effects Total Time 7 minutes Slide 6 Signs of Hearing loss Discuss each of the points, explain that these are good indicators that someone has suffered some level of hearing loss. Explain that as supervisors they need to be aware of these indicators as this may be a sign that workers are suffering from hearing loss. Discussion Point: Stand two meters away from someone and demonstrate a normal conversation / talking. Explain that at this point they should be able to hear perfectly. Slide 7 Hearing Loss Explain that hearing loss is permanent cannot be restored Hearing Aids will only help people hear slightly better Talk about lifestyle not being able to hear your children, not being able to hear your family Discuss the dangers that hearing loss brings not being able to hear warnings, cars. Identify a couple of situations where this could put a person in danger use situations in the workplace reversing trucks can t hear the warning signal. Slide 8 Tinnitus Explain the points on the slide Discuss how tinnititus is permanent, can be very stressful imagine have a constant ringing or high pitched whistling and not being able to stop it. Can stop people sleeping properly. Slide 9 What is too much noise? Explain that hearing loss is progressive not instant Exposure to loud noise over a period of time will damage the ear Total Time 2 minutes
4 Slide 10 How is noise measured? Discuss each of the points Discuss the A weighted rating noise is measured as db(a) is an average of the noise over an 8 hour period. Maximum exposure is 85dB(a) over 8 hours It is very important at this point that attendees understand what db(a) means as this will link to exposure limits. Facilitators are encouraged to use data from their workplace and noise measurement tools to explain the difference between the actual noise level and the average time weighted level Slide 11 What the law says Explain the exposure limit Slide 12 Noise Levels Explain the points within the slide ensure attendees are aware that the changes in the db are only small but the noise levels have actually doubled Slide 13 Noise Exposure Limits Go through a selection of the exposure limits Link this to processes / areas within the workplace Discuss decibel levels against time weighted average explain the difference Discuss some of the higher levels working with a jackhammer at 100dB should only be done for 15minutes then no more noise all day! Slide 14 & 15 - Employers must Discuss each of the points Identify what actions have been done within the workplace Discuss your own noise risk assessment and the findings Explain any areas that have been identified as noisy within your workplace Go through what employees must do explain that supervisors must monitor this and ensure compliance
5 Slide 17 How do I know if it is noisy? Discuss each of the points Use examples on each point lower the volume of your voice when talking to demonstrate Discuss that these are the indicators that they should look for when in the workplace The role of the supervisor is vital in identifying areas that may be noisy Ask if they know of areas already in the workplace that they think are noisy? Slide 18 What action should I take? Explain each of the points Vital that issues are reported when identified Introduce information from internal procedures / reporting specific information on who they should report it to how should they report the issue What action should they take if they feel a person is in danger be specific to the workplace and your own internal procedures. Slide 19 Controlling Noise Explain each of the points on the slide Link to your own noise risk assessment and discuss the control measures that have been identified Be specific to what supervisors can do with regards to ensuring implementation of the control measures Discuss some of the control measures that have been implemented in your own workplace. Total Time 7 minutes Slide 20 & 21 Hearing Protection Last line of defence Should only be used once the control measures in the previous slide have been implemented Important to know that hearing protection does not stop noise only reduce the amount entering the ear. Hearing protection should be comfortable Different types of hearing protection will offer different levels of protection Total Time 4 minutes Slide 22 & 23 Hearing Protection Explain that unless used and fitted correctly hearing protection will not reduce noise levels Go through each picture explaining this Give practical examples of badly fitted hearing protection use each type of identified hearing protection
6 Slide 24 Hearing Protection As supervisors know where hearing protection is required in the workplace Identify actual areas within your own workplace that are mandatory link this back to risk assessment. Explain the different noise levels in each area and what control measures have been implemented Slide 25/26/27 Use examples of each type of hearing protection and talk through the benefits of each one and the key points in the slides Slide 28/29/30/31 Fitting instructions Use multiple members of the class go through the instructions on fitting each different type of protection. Show where it has been done correctly or badly Explain that as supervisors they should be able to spot badly fitted hearing protection and offer workers advice on how to wear correctly. Total Time minutes Slide 32 Signage Ask attendees if they know the difference between the two types of signs Explain the different types of signage Explain differences between hazard signs and mandatory signs Identify areas in your own workplace where this signage exists Total Time 2 minutes Slide 33 Summary Talk through the key points of the presentation Identify any additional information from within your own workplace Talk to them about the importance of their role as supervisors and how they can help reduce noise in the workplace Quiz Go through the quiz formally or informally Add additional questions specific to your workplace Closure Go back to the initial information taken at the start of the session Discuss if they have met the objectives
