Who s on the call? Name Organization Position Why are you interested in the NOVA Oral Health Alliance?
Background Information November 2016 Lorem - January Inaugural Virginia Oral Health Report Card in Nov. 16 Kick Off: Northern Virginia Oral Health Forum in Jan January 2017 Lorem - January Population-focused workgroups developed mission, vision, and work plans Continued to grow participation Connected with state-level workgroups JanuaryLorem Present Implementing workgroup plans Renewed focus on collaboratively addressing the social determinants of health Building alliance leadership capacity and planning for sustainability
What Have We Learned?
Despite being among the most affluent regions in Virginia, NOVA experiences some of the greatest disparities in health outcomes and utilization of dental care.
28% NOVA adults without dental coverage. Prince William County: 31%.
4.8% of NOVA adults have diabetes putting them at increased risk for dental disease Studies have shown when a diabetic s dental disease is treated: They are 39% less likely to visit the hospital; 13% less likely to visit the doctor; and Save $2,840 in annual medical costs Compared to diabetics with untreated dental disease.
61% NOVA children enrolled in Medicaid/FAMIS who utilize preventive dental services annually.
16% experience dental pain that interferes with work among NOVA adults with low annual household income. Nationally, adults miss 164 million hours of work each year because of dental needs.
How is the NOVA Alliance Addressing These Issues?
Mission Improve the oral health of Northern Virginia residents by cultivating engaged and informed patients and providers, and breaking down barriers to oral health care accessibility and affordability.
NOVA Oral Health Alliance Adult Oral Health Workgroup Data Team Children s Oral Health Workgroup Community Resource Team VaOHC Backbone Support
Alliance-Wide Goals & Activities Goal: Increase public awareness and engagement around the issue of oral health and health equity in the NOVA region. Immediate Outcomes: More informed alliance members New partners engaged tackling different social determinants of oral health Local and state officials more aware of oral health status of vulnerable populations, barriers to care accessibility and delivery, and opportunities to collaboratively improve oral health in NOVA Strategies: Share advocacy messages, invite new partners to convenings, contribute information and resources, provide guidance and feedback on workgroup activities
Adult Oral Health Workgroup Goal: Identify and address the clinical and non-clinical barriers to delivering dental care to older adults residing in community settings and in long-term care (LTC) facilities. Immediate outcomes: Results of dental provider survey Utilize local data about clinical and non-clinical barriers to delivering dental care to older adults to develop and implement a communications Strategies: NVDS dental provider survey, communications plan to share results
Adult Oral Health Workgroup, cont. Goal: Implement collaborative partnerships to improve access to care for older adults. Immediate outcomes: Protocol developed for categorizing dental referrals for older adult patients Ability to highlight successful practices, replicate across various medical-dental settings serving older adults Strategies: Pilot protocol for categorizing dental referrals from medical to dental side, communications plan to share results
Adult Oral Health Workgroup, cont. Goal: Increase awareness among service providers, the older adult population of available dental resources and gaps in resources. Immediate outcomes: Community dental resource directory of providers serving older adults with eligibility criteria, clinic information Gaps in services identified and action plan developed to advocate for enhanced service coordination and coverage policies Strategies: Develop community dental resource directory, develop list of gaps in resources, develop an action plan to close gaps
Children s Oral Health Workgroup Goal: Increase dental home referrals and oral health integration practices by pediatric medical providers. Strategies: Immediate outcomes: New pediatric medical partners engaged. More NOVA children have a dental home. More pediatric offices serving a high proportion of Medicaid-enrolled kids are integrating oral health into their practices. Identify top 5 pediatric practices in each locality of NOVA region who serve the most Medicaid-enrolled children. Outreach to pediatric offices to determine their practices for dental referral, oral health assessment/screening, fluoride varnish application, and anticipatory guidance. Identify resources for individual pediatric offices to utilize to enhance their dental referrals and integration efforts. Follow up with pediatric offices to identify what worked, what didn t, and how many children got into a dental home.
Children s Oral Health Workgroup, cont. Goal: Increase follow-up care from initial dental visit. Strategies: Immediate outcomes: More NOVA children have a dental home. Barriers to obtaining a regular dental home are identified (e.g., transportation, childcare, eligibility requirements, types of services offered). Where barriers are identified, partners are engaged to address those barriers. Work within programs to identify the children with most urgent dental care needs, ensure initial consultation and follow-up by dentist. Work with pediatric practices that are completing dental referrals to ensure that referred children are going to initial appointments and have any follow-up treatment scheduled.
What do workgroup members do? Participate in bimonthly workgroup meetings or conference calls Fulfil tasks/action items you volunteer to lead Recruit additional partners - think creatively about who can help us tackle systemic barriers Incorporate oral health into their work or clinical practice Act as an champion for integrating oral health as a part of overall health in other settings
What is the benefit to participation? Collaborate with colleagues from across the region to address systemic barriers to oral health care access Information and resource sharing Timely, accurate advocacy tools and training to affect state and national health policy Technical assistance from the Virginia Oral Health Coalition Access to a statewide and national network of oral health advocates, experts, and learning opportunities
