State why there is a greater need for enhanced oral care in the older person and how good oral health contributes to systemic health State the importance of the team approach to improving the oral health of residents in residential and nursing homes. 1

4 Main Project Outcomes Raise awareness of oral disease and its links with systemic disease Create a range of evidence based resources that care staff and pharmacists may access Create train the trainer programmes Promote the use of a standard oral care assessment sheet Promote evidence based oral care interventions designed for the older person and regular access to dental care Demonsatre the effectiveness of this initiative through robust evaluation and research Through creative partnerships we shape and develop a workforce that impacts positively on health and wellbeing for all 3

15 The understanding of Periodontitis is now focused on the relationship of the disease as a risk for certain systemic diseases. Robust studies have demonstrated that in some systemic diseases the inflammatory process related to Periodontal infection especially in residents with a weakened immune system may act as an additional trigger to a disease. 14
