1 University of Iowa College of Dentistry Issue August, 2011 DSB WEEKLY Christine White, Editor College of Dentistry Has Booth at UI Freshmen Block Party Inside this issue: College of Dentistry Has Booth at Freshmen Block Party Jane King Enjoys a Family Reunion and the Iowa State Fair Recent Publications Houchen Bindery Schedule Filling Station Menu Bird Puns During last week s On Iowa! activities for the incoming UI freshmen, a block party was held Sunday, August 21, in the streets and on the grounds of President Sally Mason s residence. The College of Dentistry was the only college represented at the block party. UI dental students and collegiate staff handed out brochures, floss, toothbrushes, bookmark, and magnets. Ann Synan, Dental Clinic Administration, reports that there was lots of interest in the soda pop display at the collegiate booth and the students enjoyed the bookmark with the many uses for dental floss. One of the dental college staff, Ann Huss, Dental Clinic Administration, overheard a freshman talking by cell phone to her anxious mother: Mom, she said, I m fine! The College of Dentistry just gave me dental floss! Booth volunteers included fourth-year dental students, Kelly Huston, Jason Rogers, Ben Jorgensen, Sandy Imoehl and Megan Danforth, and Kris Hasstedt; Nate Benassi (D3); Barb Standish, Ann Synan, Joan Grabin, and Ann Huss, Dental Clinic Administration (and Maren Huss, Ann s daughter, with her friend, Kyndl Vela); Gail Lundstrom, Dental Business Office; and Laurie Swanson, Dental Administration. 5 Page 5 Jane King Enjoys a Family Reunion and the Iowa State Fair Jane King, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, reports, It has been a busy summer at the Kings. First, Kamp King this is a yearly fun-filled week when any of our nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and any other relatives who want to come to Iowa to visit us, invade us. Then, the State Fair: I, along with Brenda Colbert and Mary Litwiller, met up with friends for a day. We happened upon Sarah Palin and her husband shortly after they had arrived, and before they started making their way through the crowds. Perfect timing to take a few photos! I sort of handed her my Hawkeye bag and asked her to hold it while I snapped a picture.
