Designed to meet the challenges posed by profound changes in oral and dental health, the Dental Institute will safeguard dentistry and the wellbeing of patients for generations to come. We are delighted to share with you our vision for the UK s first independent Dental Institute, offering high quality education alongside cutting-edge research, innovation and entrepreneurship. It will be the aim of the Dental Institute to generate positive societal impact both here in the UK and across the globe, enhancing oral health, dentistry and patient care far into the future. 2 The University of Buckingham Dental Institute

5 VISION As we live longer and keep our teeth longer, maintaining oral and dental health across the globe becomes increasingly challenging, particularly in light of complex medical problems. Our distinctive approach will prepare dental professionals for this ever-changing landscape, whilst also enhancing treatment outcomes and ensuring patient safety. 6 VISION So, how will we meet our objectives and achieve our vision? 1. QUALITY STUDENT EXPERIENCE The Dental Institute embraces the University of Buckingham s established values framework regarding teaching quality and the student experience, as reflected by consistently high UK rankings for over 10 years. Whilst small enough for our students to be part of a coherent and supportive community, our Dental Institute will have the required capacity and capability to provide all the experience necessary to train ethical, caring and highly competent students, who will always put the needs of their patients first. 2. DISTINCTIVE EDUCATION AND TRAINING Offering a unique five-year undergraduate programme with high tech simulation and virtual patient interaction, the programme will also offer extended clinical masterclasses in later years. Interdisciplinary teaching will prove the hallmark of the course, allowing students to explore the impact of multi-system disease and the wider social issues impacting dentistry. 3. INTEGRATING TEACHING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Aimed at creating future leaders from an environment within which our faculty and students can drive forward their own innovations in healthcare and business administration. Delivered by experienced faculty from state-of-the-art facilities, alongside a portfolio of accessible and flexible postgraduate courses and lifelong learning opportunities, the Dental Institute will expose our students to multi-disciplinary team working and the latest advances in oral healthcare provision. Teaching at the Dental Institute will achieve a balance of excellence in clinical, leadership and business skills, deep scientific and theoretical knowledge, and an understanding of the evidence that informs risk assessment and influences decision-making. 4 The University of Buckingham Dental Institute

INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY With ageing populations, an increasing complexity of multi-system disease and the challenge of chronic pain alongside the influence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, the landscape of oral healthcare is changing rapidly. An emphasis on healthcare research and digital technologies to inform patient-centred care, alongside professionalism and effective communication, will be an institutional priority to prepare future generations of dental professionals to meet these challenges. VISION 5. UNIQUE LOCATION The Dental Institute will be co-located with the University of Buckingham Medical School, on the University s campus, which sits within the Oxford-Cambridge corridor. Situated within a single knowledge-intensive cluster that competes on a global scale, less than one hour from central London, the Dental Institute will improve access to oral healthcare provision across central England, whilst also supporting regional strategies for job creation, recruitment and retention. Our vision is ambitious, yet one we are dedicated to realising. With the help of our like-minded supporters and friends, together we will deliver a pioneering Dental Institute fit for a very different future. 8 OUTPUTS AND IMPACT OUTPUTS Future generations of highly trained dental professionals: the Dental Institute will accommodate 80 undergraduates per year, meaning that by 2030, 400 newly qualified dentists will be working throughout the UK and abroad. The Dental Institute also has plans to train dental nurses, dental hygienists and therapists, and other dental care professionals. Outreach clinical centres: as an integral part of the Dental Institute, we will create three leading outreach clinical centres in Buckingham and throughout the wider region. Offering at least 50 new roles per centre, we expect each will attract highly skilled staff to the area. Upskilling of the existing dental workforce: the Dental Institute will offer a wide range of leading postgraduate and continuing professional development courses for dental professionals. We estimate we will train at least 500 dental professionals per year. IMPACT Due to a reduction in undergraduate places and increasingly flexible working patterns, the UK needs to educate more dental professionals to prevent a possible future skills gap. The University of Buckingham an independent university can compensate for this shortfall by training more dentists alongside dental care professionals without burdening the existing healthcare system. The creation of these outreach clinical centres will significantly increase access to NHS oral health and dental care throughout Buckinghamshire and other selected locations, targeting community groups including school children, homeless populations and those in residential care. The dental profession and particularly the NHS is experiencing a potential future shortage of appropriately trained staff. Access to immersive and beneficial lifelong learning courses will support career development and encourage retention. 6 The University of Buckingham Dental Institute

11 OUTPUTS A drive towards innovation: all students will be exposed to teaching in innovation and entrepreneurship, supported by the University s pioneering Innovation and Enterprise Centre. A distinct research programme: the Dental Institute will pursue two bespoke research themes: 1) the effects of an ageing population and systemic disease, including pain, on oral and dental health and 2) the potential for digital technologies, including robotics, and artificial intelligence to enhance areas such as risk assessment. An international community: as the University of Buckingham is wholly independent, it is not subject to caps on its number of international students. As such, the Dental Institute s student population will be both global and diverse; creating a culturally rich environment. IMPACT The University has a strong history of incubating innovation and enterprise, fostering spin off companies and overseeing valuable KTPs. We will encourage staff and students to embrace similar activity within the Dental Institute. It is the Dental Institute s intention to translate its findings into real world practice; sharing its research with students and the wider oral and dental field. The result will be informed and proven methods by which to deal with future challenges facing oral and dental health. We anticipate that the Dental Institute s impact will not only be felt throughout the UK, but abroad, as our graduates return home as future leaders to offer the very latest oral health advice and dental care within their local communities. 13 DEAN AND PROFESSOR OF DENTISTRY Professor Andrew Eder BDS MSc MRD FDS FHEA Dean and Professor of Dentistry Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry Professor Andrew Eder is Dean and Professor of Dentistry at the University of Buckingham Dental Institute and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Emeritus Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and formerly Honorary Consultant at UCLH and Pro-Vice-Provost at UCL having been a clinical academic at the Eastman since Throughout his career, Professor Eder has contributed to the training of postgraduates and NHS trainees, as well as provided high quality care to patients with complex oral health needs. His academic interests include innovative methodology and technology in teaching and learning, and the impact of lifelong learning on patient outcomes in clinical practice. As a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, Professor Eder has also been in multi-disciplinary referral practice in central London for almost 30 years. He has a special interest in the aetiology, demographics and management of patients with tooth wear and is Co-Editor of the BDJ book on Tooth Surface Loss and author of over 100 publications. Professor Eder is a past president of Alpha Omega, the British Society for Restorative Dentistry and the Royal Society of Medicine s Dental Section. He is a Board Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and Chair of Examiners for the Membership in Restorative Dentistry, both at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Professor Eder has also served on the Editorial Boards of the British Dental Journal and the European Journal of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. 14 WHY BUCKINGHAM? WHY BUCKINGHAM? The University of Buckingham is entering a new and ambitious phase in its history. Having established one of the UK s only independent Medical Schools in 2015, the University has introduced a new and disruptive model for healthcare education. Entirely independent, the Medical School provides training that is not only of an exceptional quality, but places no additional pressure on the existing healthcare system. The Dental Institute will emulate this model, offering a dynamic and responsive form of teaching to advance oral health. Co-located with the Medical School, the Institute will offer an intuitive, immersive and patient-led curriculum, paving the way for future generations of exceptional dental professionals. The University s pioneering Medical School opened in 2015 and the Dental Institute hopes to welcome students from Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Buckingham The University of Buckingham Dental Institute represents yet another bold move for the University; bringing about a new model for oral health education and dental training in the UK. Under the leadership of Professor Andrew Eder, the Institute will be guided by some of the leading names in dentistry, resulting in a distinctive and world-class facility. 16 THE UNIVERSITY OF BUCKINGHAM The University of Buckingham Situated less than an hour from central London and founded in 1973, the University of Buckingham is the oldest of the country s five private universities and is the only independent university to have been granted a Royal Charter. The University has operated as a registered charity since 2011 and its finances rely entirely on student fees, research grants and philanthropic endowments. Offering bachelor s degrees, master s degrees and doctoral degrees through seven faculties, the University recently received the highest level of award in the UK s Teaching Excellence Framework, which reviews teaching excellence, the learning environment and the educational and professional outcomes achieved by students.

17 Although the University of Buckingham s last major expansion was in the 1980s, the University has now embarked on a strategic fundraising exercise. This 150 million, ten-year campaign will create all the facilities required to expand the University from 3,000 students currently (approximately half of whom are postgraduates) to 5,000 students. Following a great show of philanthropic support, 22 million has already been raised. THE UNIVERSITY OF BUCKINGHAM The University has high profile leadership and proven organisational ability to handle large-scale capital projects. The Chairman of Council is Rory Tapner, former CEO of Coutts, who served as Vice-Chairman at King s College London. The renowned education reformer, Sir Anthony Seldon, is the University s Vice-Chancellor. As part of this expansion, the University is opening a 10 million Centre for Economics and Entrepreneurship, funded by Lord Vinson, a Local Growth Fund grant from Buckinghamshire Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (BTVLEP) and the German Entrepreneur, and Alumna, Susanne Klatten.
