At later stages this disease can affect eyes, nerves, kidneys and heart etc. Diabetes can lower your resistance to infection and can slow the healing process. If you have diabetes, you are at higher risk for gum problems. Therefore one needs take special care of teeth and gums while managing blood sugar.

Some of the most common oral health problems associated with diabetes are: Tooth Decay: When starches and sugars in food and beverages interact with these bacteria, a sticky film known as plaque forms on your teeth. The acids in plaque attack the surfaces of your teeth (enamel and dentin). This can lead to cavities formation Dry mouth: Dry mouth is the result of a decrease in saliva produced by the glands in your mouth (salivary glands), and it's frequently a side effect of medication Thrush: People with diabetes who often take antibiotics to fight infections are more likely to get this fungal infection of the mouth and tongue. The fungus thrives on the high levels of sugar in the saliva of people with uncontrolled diabetes. It can give your mouth and tongue a burning feeling Cavities: You get cavities from tooth decay. It can affect both the outer coating of a tooth (called enamel) and the inner layer (called dentin) Soreness: This occurs on the tongue, gums, lips or inside the

4 cheeks, they may appear as ulcers or red, white patches in the mouth Ulcers: It is normally small, painful lesions that develop in your mouth or at the base of your gums. They can make eating, drinking, and talking uncomfortable Inflammation in your gums Fungal infections Taste impairment : It is the most common taste disorder which is a lingering, often unpleasant taste even though you have nothing in your mouth You can do a lot to avoid these problems, starting with the basics of taking good care of your mouth, teeth, and gums. Following are some of the tips: If you have dry mouth, rinse it with alcohol free mouthwash Include milk, cheese, chicken etc. in your diet. These foods helps to protect the tooth enamel by providing them calcium Brush your teeth after every meal. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing to protect any tooth enamel Use soft bristles toothbrush Floss at least once a day If you wear dentures, clean them daily.
