1 UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA LAS VEGAS SCHOOL OF DENTAL MEDICINE Competencies for Graduates of the DMD Program Introduction The UNLV School of Dental Medicine Competency statements describe the level of skills and knowledge in each critical area of the curriculum required for graduation from the DMD program. These competencies define the skills required to make the transition from provision of patient care under the supervision of faculty to the independent practice of general dentistry. The faculty of SDM recognizes that there is a higher level of skill described as proficiency that is attained over time and with experience and indicates mastery in each area. The faculty also recognizes that each of these competencies requires a foundational, integrated knowledge base in biomedical sciences, professional studies, and clinical sciences. It is important to note that these Competencies describe entry level skills with the understanding and expectation that competency will improve to proficiency over time. The UNLV SDM Competencies are standards that apply to all age groups of patients including the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient, and to the medically compromised patient. In some cases the student will be the primary provider of the procedure and terms such as perform, provide, restore, or treat are used. In other, sometimes more advanced procedures the student may perform some of the treatment and will also oversee and coordinate treatment provided by others, or refer the patient to another health care provider. In those cases, the term manage is used. 1

Access, evaluate, and incorporate into practice new knowledge, techniques, and materials 3. Promote oral and systemic health in individual patients and the community 4. Evaluate, diagnose and perform treatment planning for individual patients of all ages 5. Assess, treat or manage periodontal tissues 6. Restore defective teeth to form, function and acceptable esthetics 7. Replace missing teeth to form, function and acceptable esthetics 8. Treat or manage pulpal and peri-radicular disorders 9. Manage oral mucosal, bone, and temporomandibular disorders 10. Perform uncomplicated oral hard and soft tissue surgical procedures 11. Diagnose and manage malocclusion and occlusal disorders 12. Evaluate the outcomes of treatment provided by themselves and others 16. Manage health care provision and leadership of the oral health care team 17. Access, evaluate, and incorporate into practice new knowledge, techniques, and materials 2.01 Use current technology to retrieve and organize professional information from all sources 2.02 Critically evaluate published clinical and biomedical science literature and apply the information to manage the oral health of the patient 3. Promote oral and systemic health in individual patients and the community 3.01 Identify services available to promote oral health and assess the individual and community access to these services 3.02 Demonstrate methods of educating and motivating patients in the etiology and prevention of oral diseases 3.03 Communicate with diverse and special populations 4. Evaluate, diagnose and perform treatment planning for individual patients of all ages 4.01 Obtain/perform and record a comprehensive history, examination of orofacial structures and appropriate diagnostic tests 4.02 Establish differential, provisional and/or definitive diagnoses 4.03 Develop a comprehensive, sequenced treatment plan based on all relevant findings and patient considerations, and develop alternative plans as appropriate 4.04 Develop a thorough understanding of proper infection control and OSHA procedures and be able to competently demonstrate related techniques 5. Assess, treat or manage periodontal tissues 5.01 Perform periodontal debridement (scaling and root planing) and manage etiologic factors 5.02 Evaluate the results of periodontal treatment and establish and manage a maintenance program 6. Restore defective teeth to form, function and acceptable esthetics 6.01 Prepare teeth to support and retain dental restorations 6.02 Use appropriate dental biomaterials to create restorations to replace lost tooth structure and restore anatomical form, function and aesthetics 7. Manage oral mucosal, bone, and temporomandibular disorders 9.01 Identify the clinical features of oral mucosal diseases and disorders 9.02 Manage patients with oral mucosal diseases and disorders 9.03 Manage patients with bruxism or temporomandibular disorders (TMD) 10. Perform uncomplicated oral hard and soft tissue surgical procedures Perform uncomplicated surgical and non-surgical extraction of teeth Manage uncomplicated, localized odontogenic infections Manage the common complications of oral surgery Recognize complex conditions requiring surgical intervention(s) and explain their management 11. Competency will be assessed through written examinations and the individual evaluations of supervising faculty While providing oral health and prevention instructions to local community groups, competency will be assessed by supervising faculty through evaluation of their lesson plans and observing their presentations Through written examinations and individual group projects, students will be assessed regarding their knowledge of health promotion and prevention Competency will be assessed by evaluating students ability to obtain a medical history in Spanish from a Spanish-speaking patient When students are providing clinical services, supervising faculty will assess competency by evaluating students ability to communicate effectively with diverse and special populations. 9

Students will be required to pass these competency assessments to progress. 11

12 DSI Students will be assigned to setup, maintain and takedown an operatory following all the principles of infection control and OSHA guidelines. DS III Students will be assigned one new simple or uncomplicated patient and required to examine and gather all appropriate diagnostic data for the patient and develop an acceptable provisional diagnosis and treatment plan. DS IV Students will be assigned one new more complex patient and required to examine and gather all appropriate diagnostic data for the patient and develop an acceptable provisional diagnosis and treatment plan. All students will also be required to pass the overall and complete diagnosis and treatment plan section of the mock board exam. Students will be assigned one new pediatric patient and required to examine and gather all appropriate diagnostic data for the patient and develop an acceptable provisional diagnosis and treatment plan. 12
