1 Colgate Oral Health Month 2014 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme Delivering better oral health caries prevention in children The 2014 Colgate Oral Health Month CPD programme builds on last year s module by providing dental professionals with the opportunity to review the latest evidence-based prevention messages for their patients. This year the focus is on caries prevention for children and the latest edition of Delivering better oral health An evidence-based toolkit for prevention, third edition 1. Aim: This CPD activity is focused on the latest evidence-based guidance for advising parents and carers on caries prevention in children. It also enables dental professionals to consider any additional information they may provide to improve parent or carer understanding and help with patient compliance. Outcome: To improve the delivery and enhance the effectiveness of evidence-based advice on caries prevention. Overview: Please print this document and follow the action points below to obtain 2 hours verifiable CPD: In Delivering better oral health An evidence based toolkit for prevention, third edition 1, review the following: o Caries prevention advice summarised in section 1 o More detailed information on caries prevention in sections 2, 3, 4 & 5 o This latest edition also contains a new section on behaviour change which is found in section 10 Select a recent child patient case for reflection. If you prefer you can use the scenario detailed on the following page Use the worksheet and list the advice you would give as separate points in the left hand column. Use the right hand column to explain to parents/carers the reasons why this advice would benefit their child. Please see the example on the worksheet Finally complete your details and submit along with your completed worksheet using the freepost address provided, or scan and send the attachment to the address provided at the end of this document 1. Delivering better oral health An evidence-based toolkit for prevention, Public Health England, Third Edition, June 2014.

2 Case details Parent/carer: Number of children seen: Advice given- ages of children: Social history: Please include any relevant social history information which contributed to your given advice Scenario Example- A family of four, mother, father and two children attend for a routine check-up. The children are Tommy aged 7 and Tara aged 5 years old. Tara is caries free, Tommy has developed caries in his lower right D since his last appointment six months ago. The parents report that Tommy brushes his teeth every morning. Mum asks if Tara is old enough to brush her own teeth. Tommy is carrying a carton of a sweetened drink as he sits on the dental chair. Social history: Both parents claim income support. Both children attend school full time and grandparents pick them up after school and care for them until parents finish work in the evening.

3 Advice to be given Explanation (Example) Always brush teeth last thing at night and on one other occasion using a fluoride toothpaste. (Example) It is important to brush teeth last thing at night with fluoride toothpaste. When we sleep, there is less saliva produced in the mouth. We want fluoride to stay on teeth as it helps strengthen them and increases their resistance to tooth decay. Make tooth brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day an important part of your family routine.
