High precision for 1-step and 2-step techniques. The concept of automatic mixing Automatic mixing of impression materials with the Pentamix System has become a standard in many dental offices today. And it offers undeniable benefits, including a homogeneous, void-free mix, uniform mixing quality and clean, simple handling. 3M ESPE has always been a trailblazer in developing auto-mixed impression materials and mixing technology (Fig. 1), giving all dentists a chance to benefit from the Pentamix system in combination with their preferred impression material. Dentists who prefer to use putty silicones for precision impression taking will appreciate both available auto-mix Express 2 putty materials: Express 2 Penta Putty VPS Impression Material, which is especially suitable for the 2-step technique and Express 2 Penta Putty Soft material, which is recommended for the 1-step impression technique. Due to their very high viscosity, putty materials have always typically been mixed by hand, but that can result in non-homogeneity and the presence of voids in the mix. 1-step 2-step

Source: 3M ESPE internal data Dentists particularly value putty silicones because of their high resistance when the tray is inserted into the mouth: the resulting high pressure forces the low-viscosity wash material deep into the sulcus. In addition, they can shape the mixed material in the impression tray with their fingers. With Express 2 Penta Putty and the hydrophilic Express 2 Penta Putty Soft VPS impression material, the objective is to offer these dentists an impression material with the putty characteristics they need that can also be automatically mixed in the Pentamix System. Figure 2 compares the cut surfaces of Express 2 Penta Putty Soft (right) and a common handmix putty kneaded by hand (left). A recent study at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA) [4] investigated operators preference for different mixing techniques and durations of mixing and tray loading. All users, from dental students to experienced dentists, preferred automated mixing with a Pentamix system to hand-mixing or automatic mixing using a hand dispenser, regardless of the viscosity of the impression material employed. Use of a Pentamix device also made it easier to achieve equal mixing ratios between base and catalyst, leading to a better-quality mix (Fig. 3).

At the university of Giessen, Germany [3], Prof. Wöstmann and his group compared the impressioning procedure with two hand-mixed putties, the C-silicone Optosil Comfort Putty and the VPS material Panasil Putty fast set, with Express 2 Penta Putty VPS Material, automatically mixed in the Pentamix 2 Mixing Unit (Fig. 4). The high mixing quality of Express 2 Penta Putty impression material using the Pentamix 3 unit was confirmed in a separate study by a group from the universities of Mainz and Giessen, Germany [5]. Indications Express 2 Penta Putty and the hydrophilic Express 2 Penta Putty Soft VPS impression material are indicated for all kinds of precision impressions (e.g. crowns, bridges, inlay and onlay impressions) as well as for orthodontic impressions. 4 1-step NEW Express 2 Penta Putty Soft: Ideal for the 1-step technique Insertion resistance Express 2 Penta Putty Soft (n=45) For the 1-step technique, new Express 2 Penta Putty Soft is recommended together with or Regular Body wash material. This softer putty version is the first hydrophilic auto-mix putty on the market; it offers more usable working time because it sets more slowly. Its reduced final hardness allows for easier removal from the mouth enhancing patient comfort. Convincing clinical results To ensure that the new material meets the customers requirements, Express 2 Penta Putty Soft was evaluated in dental practices in two European countries before its market introduction. The impression materials the testers were then using were auto-mix heavy-bodied tray materials, auto-mix putty materials, hand-mix putties and C-silicones; 84% of the testers rated the new material as excellent or very good (Fig. 5), with very agreeable insertion resistance (Fig. 6) and easy mouth removal [1]. Source: 3M ESPE Clinical Survey, May-August 28 Removal of the impression from the patient s mouth was also perceived to be easy (82% excellent or very good ratings). The detail reproduction obtained with Express 2 Penta Putty Soft and Express 2 Regular Body impressions was rated as excellent or very good by 8% of the testers [1]. Putty insertion resistance In the putty/wash technique, an accurate impression can best be achieved if sufficient force is exerted on the wash material. This results in adequate flash beyond the margins of the preparation. One of the advantages of VPS putty material is the high insertion force created during tray seating. The insertion forces for Express 2 Penta Putty Soft and conventional hand-mix products and auto-mixed putty materials were compared (Fig. 7). 5 2-step Excellent hydrophilicity for great detail reproduction The hydrophilicity of an impression material contributes significantly to the impression s precision and reproduction of detail. Express 2 Penta Putty Soft is the first hydrophilic putty material that can be mixed and dispensed with an automatic mixing unit. In the 1-step impression technique, in particular, hydrophilicity ensures that the putty provides detailed reproduction of the teeth s fine structures in places not covered by the wash material. In addition, hydrophilicity allows dental technicians to produce void-free casts. Precision Express 2 Penta Putty: Designed for the 2-step technique With its high final rigidity and very good carving properties, Express 2 Penta Putty VPS material is ideal for the 2-step technique combined with Express 2 Ultra-Light Body Quick or Light Body Flow Quick wash material. Convincing clinical results A recent clinical study investigated the clinical performance of Express 2 Penta Putty material in comparison to a hand-mixed VPS putty and a C-silicone material [3]. Express 2 Penta Putty VPS impression material produced very detailed reproductions of the preparation margins (Fig. 9). The latest results on the hydrophilicity of Express 2 Penta Putty Soft material compared to hand-mix VPS putty materials are illustrated in the following diagram (Fig. 8). Only Express 2 Penta Putty Soft is truly hydrophilic. Only Express 2 Penta Putty Soft impression material exhibited contact angles significantly lower than 9, indicating significantly higher hydrophilicity than all the other silicone materials tested.

Source: 3M ESPE internal lab data In another in-vitro study the pressure during impression taking of Express 2 Penta Putty material was found to be comparable to that of a C-silicone (Optosil Comfort). As well, Express 2 Penta Putty material resulted in greater accuracy in a standardized impressioning procedure than the hand-mixed putties Optosil Comfort and Panasil Putty fast set [6]. WÖSTMANN et al. 8 Shore A hardness after 1 minutes 75 Those results confirm the product s very good clinical performance: in a randomized prospective clinical trial [7], the automatically mixed Express 2 Penta Putty material received significantly more alpha ratings for the dye models assessed and more casts with a marginal discrepancy of less than 2 µm than the hand-mixed Panasil Putty fast set. Shore A hardness Putty insertion resistance Dentists who prefer to use a putty particularly value its high insertion resistance. In a previous study, the insertion resistance of hand-mix putty materials and of automatically mixed Express 2 Penta Putty material was investigated ([2] and Fig. 12).
