2 Introduction The spring conference of the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry this year returns to a campus format at the Palace Hotel in the historic spa town of Buxton in Derbyshire. The town developed into a major inland resort in Victorian times as spa water treatment and bathing became fashionable, and the legacy of that time, the crescent, the opera house, the pavilion and pavilion gardens, and the old royal hospital supporting the largest freestanding dome in the country, remain at the heart of the town. Buxton is easily reached with a regular train service from Manchester and Stockport connecting into services from all major UK cities and Manchester Airport. The Palace Hotel is literally next door to the railway station. The theme of this year s conference is The Changing Population: Oral health needs and challenges in the next generation. We commence by reviewing the latest evidence regarding the global burden of oral disease, and consider how behavioural aspects influence health in the 21st century. We look at two specific population groups, children and older adults, and examine the key dental public health issues that they present. I am pleased to have input from their respective dental specialist societies, who will ensure we consider clinical realities in our discussions. Ken Eaton, currently president of EADPH, has conducted a series of interviews with oral health policy makers across Europe, and I am really looking forward to his montage of different ways that this oral health challenge of caring for older adults is being addressed in the different countries. One area which adds considerably to the burden of oral disease but is often neglected is dental fear. Traditionally addressed by using chemical approaches to allow treatment, Professor Tim Newton and John Davies will explain how the evidence points to psychological methods being more effective in tackling the fear itself, and how it is possible for these to be delivered by the dental workforce themselves. Finally we will have an update on the dental contract pilots in England including hearing from one of the participating practitioners. BASCD conferences have over many years allocated time for short member s papers. These allow members to inform colleagues about their current work, and provide an ideal opportunity for younger members, including trainees, to gain experience of presenting at a major scientific conference. In addition as usual at spring conference, we will be holding our two poster competitions for the Roger Anderson prize and the Oral Health Promotion research prize.
