Tooth decay affects school, work, self-esteem, and quality of life.! Surgeon General s Report 2000! 50% of decay in low income children goes untreated.

10 Park City School District! PTA Volunteers and Coordinators! Administer the weekly fluoride mouthrinse to students in 1 st grade through 5 th grade.! Servicing 1813 students in Park City School District.! School Nurse Supervisor! Annual trainings! Orders fluoride and stores fluoride at PCHS! Submits end-of-year state report! School Nurse! Distributes and collects parent permission forms & donations! Submits donations to fluoride fund at District office! Provides classroom lists with eligible students! Assists in administration if needed

16 Fluoride Mouthrinse Program! Best days to dispense the fluoride mouthrinse! Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday! Better attendance! Same day and time each week.! Administer at the beginning of the school day! (1 st 10 minutes).

17 Process of Weekly Mouthrinse 1. Use carts to transport fluoride to classrooms. 2. Have students come out to the hall-check roster. 3. Count number of weekly participants for each class and document on form. 4. Dispense mouthrinse and a napkin. 5. Students remove lid and swish vigorously for 1 minute a. Facilitator gives instructions and times process. b. Easier if student is able to see a clock. 6. Students spit mouthrinse back into the cup, wipe their mouths with the napkin, and put the napkin in the cup to absorb the solution. a. Remind students to not swallow the fluoride 7. Cups and napkins are thrown away in plastic bag or garbage.

18 Fluoride Inges=on! If a child accidentally swallows the weekly portion of rinse, there should be no adverse reaction. Children who repeatedly swallow the rinse should be given a water rinse until they demonstrate that they are able to rinse without swallowing.
