B: Stage II: Deformed but still moving. C: Stage III: Crippled: Pain and limited mobility Same urine fluoride levels as endemic fluorosis JADA 136, 2005:67-70

Position of the Canadian Dental Association Up to 480 % higher the total daily fluoride intake from all sources should not exceed mg/kg/day 0.5 ppm 0.7 ppm 0.24 mg/kg/day 5 kg baby Clifford H, Olszowy H, Aust N Z J Public Health Dec;33(6): total intake with I.0 L = 1.2 mg

Fluoride intake increases lead uptake These findings suggest that a biological effect not recognized so far may underlie the epidemiological association between increased BPb levels in children and water fluoridation. Sawan RM. Et al. Toxicology. 2010; 271(1-2):21-6.

Is Arsenic in fluoridation chemicals a problem? Hydrofluosilicic acid diluted to 1.0 ppm fluoride adds up to 1.66 ppb arsenic into the drinking water supply A study from Finland (Kurttio, et al, 1999) found that people drinking water with 0.1 to 0.5 ppb arsenic had a 50% greater risk of developing bladder cancer than people drinking water with less than 0.1 ppb.

Fluoridation workers at risk Facial and Forearm burns A leaky pump Erosion of equipment Severely eroded teeth Everything dies in contact with full strength fluoride

By definition, fluoride is a drug, even in tap water (treats disease not water) additive Vitamin D in Milk Iodide in salt Folic acid in bread Fluoride in toothpaste, pills chlorine status Essential nutrient Essential nutrient Essential nutrient DRUG: Nonessential nutrient Non-essential water treatment

Not a single properly conducted RCT (randomized, double blinded) clinical trial to show that fluoridation works or has negative side effects Merck HAD RCTs for Vioxx but the drug killed too many people once it was prescribed by MDs Both the FDA and Health Canada put their emphasis and resources into assessing drug benefits, not harms. Can Med Assoc Journal, 2005, vol172 no.1 Vioxx was withdrawn after FDA and Health Canada approval $1 Billion in fines + Class action law suits Water with HFSA The next VIOXX lawsuit?

Slade G. et al. (2013) J Dent Res Fluoridation may not have any benefit in modern times because of other fluoride sources A lifetime (40 years) of fluoridation might save one tooth per person from decay

Who is Parry Sound Targeting with Fluoridation? 1000 children age 4 to 19 (Stats Can 2011) (there are no studies to show it helps adults) Especially the poor children -high risk because of 1. poor dietary habits 2. not brushing teeth or using toothpaste 3. not regularly attending a dental office Need to know 1. How many go to a dentist in town? 2. How many are on government assistance but DON T go to a dentist? 3. How many fall between the cracks and don t even get government assistance?

The cost of fluoridating Parry Sound for 20 years $5000 X 20 + $25000 X 2? = $600,000 PLUS the cost of treating dental fluorosis The cost of treating the dental decay (assuming Parry Sounders save 0.5 surfaces from decay) 500 children to 6000 people X 0.5 X $120 = $30,000 to $360,000 It costs 2 to 20 times more to fluoridate than fix the teeth

This can be carried out at school by a public health hygienist

Suggested alternative programs -stock food banks with fluoridated toothpaste and toothbrushes (100 families X $100/yr X 20 = $20,000 total cost) -start a brush-in program with a breakfast program at schools for the poor families who qualify -start a fluoride varnish program at school (cost is $6/child/yr) but only to those without access to a dentist (100? X $6 X 20 = $12,000 over 20 years) -help enroll the poor families with government assistance and provide transportation to the Public Health Dental Clinic in North Bay -work with dentists in town to enroll more people on government assistance in their dental practices

Hi, I m Dr Davidson Veighey, a local dentist for the past ten years in Parry Sound. All of the dentists in town love this community, and want to see it improve, not take a step backward 50 years. There has been a very vocal minority here in town, and in the country, who have tried to force the removal of fluoride from the water, against the better wishes of the majority of the town, and against the recommendations of countless scientists, health care providers, and Regulatory bodies. The Centre for Disease control Called dental Fluoridation one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20 th century. The Canadian Dental Association said: The appropriate use of fluorides in the prevention of dental decay is one of the most successful preventative health measures in the history of health care Over 100 national and international organizations endorse the fluoridation of drinking water to prevent decay, including the Canadian dental association, The world health organization, the CDC, the US public health Service, the Canadian Medical Association, the Royal college of dental Surgeons. The list goes on and on. These are the experts and leaders in their fields. Is there some reason to suddenly not trust them?

The removal of fluoride from the water will affect the financially disadvantaged in our community the most, as every dollar spent on fluoridation prevents 38$ in dental care. Fluoridated communities have 20-40% less decay that those without. So what happens to our social Programs like Ontario works, Indian Affairs, and ODSP, when costs increase by 30%? Where does that money come from? Opponents of Fluoride will say there is no science show that fluoride works. At the same time they try to claim that fluoride causes a vast array of health problems, ranging from cancer, skeletal fluorosis, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, and even lowered IQ! None of these claims hold water. The vast majority of the science shows that fluoridated water is incredibly beneficial, and the 2010 health Canada report Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality :Fluoride, found no link between any of the above maladies and fluoridated water at 1.5mg/L, which by the way is twice the amount used in the Parry Sound water supply. If something is of extreme benefit at trace amounts, but bad for us in much higher doses, should we ban it? We can all agree that water is pretty important to our survival, but people can die of water intoxication. Should we ban public drinking water?

Council made the right call on keeping fluoride in the water this past year, and I think I speak for all the dentists in town when I say they should be commended for making the right decision. All we ask is that you please not give in to this recent anti fluoride mania that has been championed by a select few. The only people in town who would benefit from the removal of fluoride from the water, would be dentists, because we would be much busier with the vast increase in dental decay, but the community will be much worse for it five or ten years down the road. Let's please move forward as a community, not backward! Thank you.
