2 Entry Criteria The minimum requirements for appointment and other qualities considered desirable are detailed in the attached person specification. Training Programme The Welsh Government and the Chief Dental Officer for Wales recognise the need for workforce planning in oral medicine and the future development of a managed clinical network in oral medicine, hence the need for this training post. The duration of the training programme will be as defined by the General Dental Council Specialty Training Curriculum for Oral Medicine ( Each Trainee has an Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) to confirm satisfactory progress through the training scheme. The Training Programme is approved by the Director of Postgraduate Dental Education, Wales Deanery with advice sought from the Specialist Advisory Committee in Oral Medicine. The programme will be managed by the Deanery appointed Training Programme Director (TPD) who will be responsible for ensuring programme delivery and that the GDC approved specialty curriculum enables trainees to gain relevant competencies, knowledge, skills and attitudes and experience to achieve the Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training (CCST), subject to satisfactory progress. Oral Medicine Training University Dental Hospital and University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park, Cardiff, CF14 4XY The oral medicine service at Cardiff is provided by two consultants. There are six oral medicine outpatient clinics in the university dental hospital (UDH) each week. There are four typical outpatient clinics with new and review patients, there is a biopsy/review patient clinic and a complex-cases clinic. There is also a periodic joint oral medicine-paediatric dentistry clinic. The oral medicine service is an all-wales service and takes referrals from primary dental and medical service colleagues, as well as consultant colleagues within the hospitals of the Cardiff & Vale UHB. Referrals additionally come from medical and dental colleagues from primary care in adjacent health boards, and secondary and tertiary referrals from OMFS and OS consultant colleagues in adjacent health boards (Abertawe Bro Morgannwg/ABMU Swansea, Aneurin Bevan/Newport, Cwm Taf/Merthyr) and more distant health boards. There are strong links with neurology, neurosurgery, chronic pain, rheumatology, dermatology and gastroenterology/paediatric gastroenterology colleagues, amongst other specialties. The oral medicine service is well supported by colleagues in oral surgery and OMFS, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral pathology and oral microbiology (one of the few dental hospital

3 in the UK to have this on-site facility). The dental hospital has consultants in all dental specialties who work with consultants in oral medicine where needed. There is a dental photography unit, and a dental library in the dental hospital building. Elsewhere on the University Hospital Wales site there is an extensive health library within the Cochrane Building. Specialty Registrars will have an office with PC and internet access and all staff have access to Libraries at the Dental and Medical Schools on site which are stocked with full range of books required for oral medicine training. Oral medicine training will be delivered over a maximum five-year full time programme. This should lead to: Speciality Fellowship of a Royal College (FDS Oral Medicine) following success in the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) and a CCST Entry onto the specialist list in oral medicine Eligibility to practice as a specialist and consultant The indicative timetable is included below and has flexibility for change within it depending on the stage of training and competencies of the StR. In recent years oral medicine StRs have visited Cardiff for long and short periods from their home training programs elsewhere in the UK. The StR program may include elements including: Outpatient management o Exposure to referrals from primary and secondary care colleagues for the management of potentially-malignant disease, oral mucosal disease, orofacial pain, bullous disease and oral manifestations of systemic disease amongst others Inpatient advice o Occasional requests for review and management advice for inpatients in wards of Cardiff and Vale hospitals. There are no inpatients directly under the care of oral medicine

4 Urgent Suspected Cancer o There is a steady stream of USC patients referred to the oral medicine clinics for assessment and investigation. We work closely with colleagues in oral pathology and OMFS for patients with potentially malignant disease A well-focused general oral medicine training o Trainee will be exposed to a specialist educational programme organised locally at Cardiff. o Establishment of the oral medicine SpR Journal club Management of healthcare delivery o Trainee will be expected to attend the monthly departmental and clinical audit/clinical governance meetings. Both oral medicine trainers are NHS/Honorary Consultants who lead clinical service delivery for the Health Board. Audit, research, critical appraisal o Trainee may have the responsibility for organising Journal Clubs and will be expected to undertake clinical audit. Research opportunities may arise and publication of research or other similar material is encouraged Log Book, Appraisal and Assessment and Annual Planning As part of this training programme, the Trainee will be expected to keep a logbook of activity. The Trainee will register with the on-line portfolio, the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP). Progress will be formally assessed at the ARCP as per the Dental Gold Guide: The Dental Gold Guide, Fourth Edition, June 2016, and through regular appraisal with their educational supervisor. Study Leave The appointee will be expected to attend and participate in postgraduate courses, national and international meetings as appropriate to their stage of training. Administration Trainees will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the functioning of the oral medicine service. Shared office accommodation with other dental trainees and staff will be provided. Additional Responsibilities The successful applicant may be required to undertake such additional duties as may be required under the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff.

5 Conditions of Service a) The posts are covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the General Whitley Council Terms and Conditions of Service as amended in negotiation with the Trust Medical and Dental Staff Negotiating Committee. Details of these may be obtained from the Dental Personnel Department. b) The posts are nominally full time but requests for less than full time training (LTFT) would be considered. Trainees will be advised of the working pattern for these posts prior to taking up your appointment. c) Applications for annual leave must be submitted in writing to the Personnel Department at least six weeks before leave is taken. It must also be requested having first taken into account your colleagues leave so as to enable adequate clinical cover to be maintained. d) At no time should the Trainee work at a level exceeding their competence. All dental staff therefore have a responsibility to inform those supervising their duties if they have any concerns regarding this or if they feel that they are not competent to perform a particular duty. Conditions of Appointment a) The completion of a satisfactory health declaration questionnaire and screening is a condition of the appointment. The post holder must comply with the UK Health Department guidance on "Protecting Health Care Workers and Patients from Hepatitis B" (PSM(93)12), as implemented by the Trust. b) Because of the nature of the work of this post it is exempt from the provision of Section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of the Offenders Act 1974 (Exemption Order 1975). Applicants are therefore not entitled to withhold information about convictions of the Act. In the event of employment, failure to disclose such convictions could result in dismissal or disciplinary action. Any information given will be completely confidential and will be, considered only in relation to an application to which the order applies. c) The Trainee must hold current registration with the GDC throughout the duration of this contract. d) The Trainee is normally covered by the NHS Hospital and Community Health Services indemnity against claims of medical negligence. However, in certain circumstances (e.g. in service for which you receive a separate fee or in an emergency situation outside of work) you may not be covered by the indemnity. The Health Departments, therefore, strongly advise that you maintain membership of your medical defence organisation.
