Years - Here s what you need to know before you visit us - Page 1 Inside: What To Expect at Your First Visit 2 Common Treatments That May Be Recommended After Your Check-up 3 Insurance Coverage & Pricing 4 FAQ

No Surprises! What To Expect At Your First Visit 1 Office Tour When you walk in the door, you will be greeted by one of our Patient Care Coordinators. They will offer you a short walk through, so you can familiarize yourself with the office. 2 New Patient Forms When you first come to our office we ask that you fill out a couple of forms. They should only take you minutes to fill out. You can also fill them out prior to coming into the office to save time. They can be found at the bottom of this information guide. 3 Comprehensive Exam To determine your exact treatment plan to maintain optimal oral health, your doctor will perform a comprehensive exam. During your personalized visit with the doctor, the following will take place: Medical history review Series of diagnostic digital X-rays will be taken to provide a detailed radiographic view of your teeth and bone condition Oral Cancer Screening (optional) Hard tissue and cavity detection exam Complete periodontal exam - the gums and bone that surround your teeth will be evaluated for signs of hidden gum disease Comprehensive dental evaluation is recorded in your digital chart showing your existing and required dental treatment. Tour of your mouth with a miniature video camera at high magnification, if available Verbal and written educational materials are provided based on your dental needs After your examination, the doctor will review all findings, discuss your treatment recommendations and sequence; give you a customized written report and answer all of your questions to your satisfaction and understanding 4 Hygiene (if time permits) Cleaning of your teeth may be done depending on the results of this exam. Dental cleanings are done by our registered dental hygienists. Myth vs. Fact My parents had bad teeth, so my dental problems have to be hereditary. It is possible your problems may hereditary, but not very likely. Just because your parents had bad teeth doesn t mean that you are doomed to the same fate. In fact, many times a person s dental issues can be traced back to poor home care habits that were taught by those parents who had bad teeth from their poor home care. The bad oral hygiene techniques were passed down, not the bad teeth gene. Only a small percent of patients actually inherited their dental problems.

Welcome 5 Treatment Plan Review Following your new patient exam, depending on the complexity of your treatment plan, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to provide you with a plan presentation. Your Patient Care Coordinator will review the doctor s recommendations and what your custom plan will entail with good, better and best treatment options. This is your opportunity to ask any questions prior to making a decision on how to proceed. 6 Payment & Scheduling Your Next Visit An adult new patient exam will cost you $167 X-rays will cost between $45 - $200 depending on what s required and the oral cancer screening is $25. Your hygiene appointment will cost approximate, $150, for a grand approximate total of $502. You can expect to pay half that for a child under the age of 16. Example Audlt Receipt All necessary x-rays to analyze condition Comprehensive Exam Oral Cancer Screening (Optional) Cleaning minutes of cleaning and fluoride prevention Will my insurance cover this? Example Child Receipt Cleaning All necessary x-rays to analyze condition Comprehensive Exam Forget about trying to fill your head with information that you know you`re probably going to forget. Give us a call and we`ll tell you exactly what you and your family are covered for. But, if you want to get a head start, read on. Myth vs. Fact Putting off my dental work will help me to save my money. Putting off dental care will cost you many thousands more in the long run. For example, a small cavity that can be cleaned out without any anesthesia and filled very conservatively and inexpensively will save a lot of money in the long run. When left untreated, that tiny cavity can become a large cavity that requires a more expensive restoration such as a multiple surface filling, an inlay/onlay (restorations usually made by a dental lab that fill in missing areas of tooth structure when an area is too large for a filling) or a crown All prices are based on Dawson pricing (lab fees included), which follows the Ontario Dental Association fee guide, but may differ slightly from location to location. Prior to the beginning of any treatment, a comprehensive exam and digital x-rays will be necessary.

Common Treatments That May Be Gum Disease Cavity Sore Jaw /Facial Pain Dental Hygiene Therapy Filling Night guard/bite Orthotic If you haven t been to the dentist in a long time, you may require additional visits to our dental hygienist to restore your oral health through gum therapy. Our personalized gum therapy program includes professional oral care cleanings to remove harmful deposits, antibacterial treatment to help kill bacteria, home care education and close monitoring. An examination and x-rays will be performed to assess your condition and to determine treatment. A comprehensive evaluation of your medical and dental history will also be completed. Once seen, the decay is cleaned out and replaced with a sedative or permanent filling. If there is an abscess (pus filled swelling) it may need to be drained. Our dentist will make a custom orthotic to reposition your jaw into a more physiologic resting position. This initial phase is completely reversible and allows them to stabilize your new, more comfortable bite. Once an acceptable comfort level has been reached, a decision on long term options can be made. Crooked Teeth Sleep Apnea /Snoring Tooth Infection Invisalign/Braces /Veneers Sleep Apnea Appliance Root Canal Therapy Invisalign and braces will take approximately one-year of treatment an will require multiple appointments. Veneers take a maximum of two appointments. The doctor will first prep your teeth and then fabricate the custom temporary veneers in office and bring you back in for a final insertion visit of your permanent veneers. In conjuntion with your physician, your dentist will assess your bite and jaw alignment to determine the severity of your case. A lab will then fabricate your custom oral appliance. Don't worry! Most people think that a root canal is the worst thing that can happen. In reality, with sedation options and special techniques, root canal therapy is generally downright comfortable. Broken /Cracked Tooth Crown Your tooth is prepared by first removing any old, failing restorations, and any weak or decayed areas of tooth structure. Then the core of the tooth is built up for the crown to be placed. A lab will then fabricate your custom crown, and we will place it for you. Myth vs. Fact Nothing bothers me so I can avoid going to the dentist. Avoiding dental care is never a smart decision. Some people wait until the pain is enough to exceed their avoidance tendency. This fear of pain is one of the major reasons why patients fail to seek help from a dentist until their emergency becomes too severe. At that point, what should have been a simple cavity now becomes a more involved root canal or extraction. A patient who avoids routine dental cleanings and gum maintenance can wind up with severe gum disease, which causes gum recession, bone loss, tooth mobility and the eventual loss of teeth. Swellings and infections may result from neglecting these cavities and gum issues, and what would have been unnecessary costs and procedures will now be necessary to restore the mouth back to a better state of health and function. People who maintain their dental health enjoy better health and spend less on dentistry than those who don t.

Recommended After Your Checkup 2+ Visits 74% 92% 1 Visit 23% 62% When you avoid routine dental cleanings and gum maintenance can wind up with severe gum (periodontal) disease, which causes gum recession, bone loss, tooth mobility and the eventual loss of teeth. Swellings and infections may result from neglecting these cavities and gum issues, and what would have been unnecessary costs and procedures will now be necessary to restore your mouth back to a better state of health and function. If the decayed tooth is left untreated, an infection can result and spread to other parts of your body. 2+ Visits 35% 35% Invisalign/Braces: approximately one-year Veneers: usually only take 2 visits 37% 41% 2 Visits 17% 19% 1 Visit 8% 13% 2 Visits 5% 7% TMJ disorder unique symptoms. You know you have it if you experience recurring headaches. You would also feel facial pains from time to time. The pain may start in your joints and spread over your head and face. It could get worse as you open and close your jaw. The contraction of the jaws is painful, more so if you're exposed to the cold weather or relatively cold surroundings. If left untreated, crooked and overlapping teeth make it more difficult to maintain the health of your gums and teeth. Additionally, not only for aesthetic reasons, but the occlusion (your bite) is usually affected. People with bad bites may chew less efficiently. The consequences of not treating snoring and sleep apnea include waking yourself and others, affecting job performance, hypertension, lack of ability to concentrate, heart attack, stroke and in extreme cases, even death. You could get an extraction and avoid the root canal all together, but then adjoining teeth may shift and interfere with biting and chewing. If you can save your own tooth with any degree of long term predictability, then that would always be the first choice. After you have had a root canal, your tooth is very susceptable to breaking in its weakened state. Although you have made a wise choice to preserve your tooth, we recommend protecting your investment with a crown. Otherwise, you take the risk of losing your tooth through potential breakage. * These findings are from an internal survey at Dawson Dental. They are an illustration of what tends to be discovered with our new patients.

Treatment Costs & Insurance Coverage Most people don t realize it, but dental treatment plans are frequently recommended to patients who come in for their new patient visit, especially in cases where they have not been to the dentist for a long period of time. The earlier the problem is detected, the less time and money it will cost you to restore your oral health. I m sure you ve wondered in the past how much treatment costs, but no one ever tells you. In many cases your benefits will cover the costs. And, even if you don t have insurance, Dawson has interest-free financing options available, to help work with your budget. We ve got you covered! We ve listed treatment costs and what insurance plans will cover. Insurance Plans Give us a call and we ll tell you exactly what you are covered for. 8 Why Patients Love Dawson Dedicated contact centre Why do some people have a fear of dentistry? Fear and anxiety develop out of socialization, personal experience, and the mass media (movies, television, news stories, etc). Fear can come from an individual s own personal perception of the situation, which is usually based on past experiences coupled with their interpretation of the present situation. A sizable portion of the general population who could benefit from dental care don`t receive treatment because of their fear. Dawson Dental offers various forms of sedation depending on your level of comfort. For big scaredy cats, we have dentistry asleep so can snooze through the whole thing. We also have what s called oral sedation all you have to do is take a little pill, and within minutes, you ll be oblivious to any inkling of any kind of pain. It s safe, easy, and comfortable. For little scaredy cats, we have nitrous oxide you ve probably heard it called laughing gas. You won t be oblivious like with the little pill, but let s just say, it ll take the edge off. Way off. Download our FREE sedation guide at DawsonDental.ca. What causes a toothache? A toothache occurs when the nerve within the tooth gets damaged or inflamed. This is usually caused by bacteria from the tooth decay communicating with the nerve of the tooth. These cavities are usually brought about by a combination of poor oral hygiene coupled with eating a lot of sticky, sugary and starchy foods. This bacteria feeds on the sugars and starch left over from poor brushing and flossing. As a result, acids are produced that will slowly eat away at the good tooth structure until the nerve becomes damaged, causing the toothache. When should I first take my child to the dentist? Parents should take their children to the dentist for their first check-up after their first birthday. Subsequently, they should go for regular check-ups every 6 to 12 months, so your child s dentist can monitor their oral hygiene, diet and growth patterns. It is best if your child s first experience occurs at a time before invasive dental work becomes necessary. A ride on the dental chair, magic tricks with Mr. Thirsty and visiting the toy chest should make your child s visit pleasurable and non-threatening. The first visit should also include the counting of teeth while your child looks at what is happening in a hand held mirror. Remember, early dental check-ups makes it easier to build a good rapport with your child to establish a foundation of trust and comfort for future visits.
