1 Spring 2013 President s Message Professor Edward Chin Man LO Dear Fellows & Members, This year is the tenth year I have been serving in the College Council and it is a great honour for me to serve you as the new President of the College. The other new College office bearers in this term ( ) are Dr. Robert Ng as the Vice-President for Education and Examinations, and Dr. Katherine Leung as the Censor-in-chief. I would also like to welcome Dr. May Ho to join the College Council. Besides, we have new appointments to the various committees and specialty boards in 2013, and the updated list of members can be found in this Newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the newly appointed members and to sincerely thank the outgoing members for their contributions. With a healthy turnover in the composition of the various committees and boards, our College remains as a vibrant body. At the last conferment held in November 2012, we admitted Dr. Homer Tso as our Honorary Fellow and also 13 new Fellows in various specialties. There are many potential Fellows in the pipeline, including the 10 trainees who passed their Exit Examination and the 13 trainees who passed their Intermediate Examination at the end of I am happy to see that our College is growing well

2 There is no doubt that we are committed to life-long learning and continuous upgrading of our knowledge and skills to serve our patients and the community. Last year, the CME Subcommittee prepared a new set of Principles and Guidelines (P&G) and these have been approved by the HKAM for use in the next CME/CPD cycle in The changes, compared to the current set of CME/CPD P&G, are minor and help to clarify how to obtain CME/CPD points. The full version of the new P&G will be posted in the College website in due course. Since 2013 is the last year of the current ( ) cycle, Fellows and Members are reminded to check your CME/CPD points and to ensure that the requirements will be met by the end of the year. This year, in 2013, we are going to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of our College and that of the HKAM. A series of programmes is being planned and activities will take place throughout the year. 10 Scientific Meetings 2012 Winter Scientific Meeting The Scientific Meetings Committee is pleased to report that the Winter Scientific Meeting was successfully held on 18 th November 2012 at the HKAM Building. Professor Finbarr ALLEN, Professor/Consultant in Oral Rehabilitation and Prosthodontics, and Dean of Dentistry at University Dental School and Hospital, Cork, Ireland made an informative presentation on the various approaches to maintain a functional dentition to the end of life, and the strategies for coping with tooth loss in geriatric patients. Our second speaker, Dr. Chun Bon LAW, Specialist in Internal Medicine and in Geriatrics, and designated Chief of Service at the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics of the Princess Margaret Hospital shared his experience in managing elderly patients with neuro-cognitive disorder with an emphasis on obtaining consent for treatment, and updated the participants on anti-thrombotic treatment. This whole-day meeting was well-attended with over 230 participants and generously supported by a number of dental companies. Feedbacks from the participants were very positive. I would like to thank the members of the Scientific Meetings Committee, and Dr. S K Chan in particular, for their valuable contributions. 11 News for Fellows and Members The 2013 Spring Scientific Meeting The coming Spring Scientific Meeting will be held on 26 th May 2013 and the theme is Diagnosis and Management of Oro-facial pain. We have invited Professor David Wray who is the Dean of Dubai School of Dental Medicine and Dr Steven Wong, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, Department of Anaesthesiology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong, to be our speakers. Please mark your diary and do not miss out this event. We look forward to meeting you then. CDSHK Scholarship The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong has set up a Scholarship (Scholarship) to support Fellows admitted in or after the year 2008 and higher trainees in our specialist training pathways to receive overseas training. The maximum amount of the Scholarship will be HK$50,000 for the year The training programme will be self-arranged for duration of not more that 8 weeks and needs approval by the College. The Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with any other award, grant or sponsorship that will give financial support for the same training. Application forms and details of the Scholarship can be obtained at our website at Deadline for application will be 31 July FDS RCSEd without Examination RCSEd's Dental Faculty has announced to offer a Dental Fellowship without Examination for UK and international holders of a Specialty Dental Membership through written application.
