4 Description : LFS 128 Title: Anatomy and Physiology II The Human Anatomy and Physiology II course will help you explore the close relationship between the structure and functions of the urinary, and reproductive systems, as well as understand the control and coordination of body functions by the nervous and endocrine systems. It will provide an insight into electrolyte and acid-base balance, pregnancy, and growth and development. It will provide you with the knowledge needed for understanding the Pathophysiology and nursing courses. : LFS 214 Title: Oral Biology You will be introduced to the embryological development of the tooth and it s supporting tissues and a thorough study of anatomy and physiology of the tissues related to the oral cavity. You will also acquire knowledge of the ecology of the oral microflora and its significance in oral diseases. : LFS 131 Title: Nutrition You will get a basic understanding about nutrients, their requirements and health problems due to inadequate nutrition. Dietary guidelines in the form of recommended daily allowances, tables of food composition and basic food groups are presented and discussed. You will find out how to determine an individual s caloric needs and calculate the calorie value of a given diet. : SBS 122 Title: Human Relations Through this course you will be able to understand the different types of interactions among people in business organizations, personal and educational life. This will be done through covering various topics like communication, self-esteem and attitudes, and conflict resolutions skills. : AHD 001 Title: Introduction to the Professions The course will provide you with an overview of the roles, responsibilities and the scope of the healthcare professions. In addition, it will guide you to develop the right attitude towards practicing the skills related to the profession. It will also introduce you to the professional and technical responsibilities of the allied health profession. : DH 202 Title: Dental Materials The focus is on dental materials and equipment used by the dental hygienists. Emphasis is given to the properties, manipulation and application of preventive and simple restorative dental products. : DH 203 Title: General and Oral Pathology General pathology emphasizes basic pathophysiology including cellular injury, agents of inflammation, disease, healing and hemostasis. Genetic processes, diseases of the immune system, circulatory shock and neoplasia are also studied. This provides the basis for oral pathology which emphasizes the incidence, clinical appearance, differential diagnosis, and associated problems of oral pathological conditions. : DH 125 Title: Dental Hygiene Process Care I The Dental Hygiene Process of Care Model is the framework for dental hygiene practice. Dental anatomy and instrumentation skills comprise foundation content. Didactic, laboratory and clinical case study and exercises are applied. Universal precautions and competency testing are introduced. : DH 215 Title: Dental Hygiene Process Care II Assessment and diagnostic clinical skills are developed and honed through student partner guided practice. Students assume responsibility for general infection control protocols, instrument design and maintenance. Clinic management is introduced. : DH 225 Title: Dental Hygiene Process Care III Continued case study and student partner guided practice lead to planning and implementing evidence-based protocols and patient care services. Decision-making, self-initiative and problem solving skills are applied. assignments are given for dental specialty rotations. 4
5 : DH 315 Title: Dental Hygiene Process Care IV Implementation and assessment of patient care services are emphasized. Self-assessment skills are also applied to student performance. : DH 325 Title: Dental Hygiene Process Care V The complete Dental Hygiene Process of Care Model is applied. Students are responsible for total patient care, infection control protocols, and all aspects of managing the clinic. : DH 210 Title: Oral Radiography Provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to safely take, process and interpret dental radiographs. Emphasis is on interpretation of normal anatomical landmarks and oral pathology. : DH 213 Title: Epidemiology for Dental Hygienists This course has three components: biostatistics, general epidemiology, and oral epidemiology. A review of professional literature is a course outcome. Survey techniques and experimental design are stressed to enable the student to contribute to local studies, evaluate published reports and develop a research proposal. : DH 214 Title: Periodontology Etiology, risk models, contributing factors, and treatment of periodontal diseases are the focus. Didactic content is applied to clinical patients and case study learning. Specific microbiology and systemic consequences of periodontal infections are also stressed. : DH 219 Title: vention of Oral Diseases A variety of health promotion and disease prevention strategies are applied for systemic and oral and dental health. Special emphasis is given to the dental hygienists role in the prevention of oral diseases through oral health education and techniques used to actively involve people in the preventive educational process. : DH 222 Title: Patient Management Students learn to recognize and cope with patients with special general health problems and special oral conditions. Emphasis is placed on oral health care for children, patients with chronic conditions, and special needs. Students select a specific topic of interest, develop sources of information and present a final written and oral report. : DH 223 Title: Dental Public Health Didactic content stresses the application of epidemiological principles and health promotion programs implemented by the dental hygienists in Bahrain. Students develop, implement and evaluate dental health programs. Students then develop a research project and report on the process and outcome of their work. : DH 250 Title: Dental Hygiene Field Service The student is assigned to work with dental hygienists in at least two health centers. Through this team approach, they are oriented to the job responsibilities and services provided by dental hygienists in Bahrain. Experiences include health education, clinical practice and implementation of dental health programs. : EDU 209 Title: Teaching in Oral Health Care This course helps you explore the environmental elements that influence the teaching learning process. It also equips you with skills required to deliver effective teaching based on the systems approach in education : HCA 209 Title: Work Relations for Dental Hygiene This course presents an introduction to effective relationships, communication and customer relations at work. You will also learn how to win people over with techniques of influence and methods of persuasion, how to motivate others, improve relationships and gain the support and co-operation of colleagues. As a result of mastering these techniques, you will be able to communicate and work more effectively thereby creating a more enjoyable and productive working environment. 5

You will develop basic level competencies in listening, reading, speaking and writing skills using a variety of learning materials to generate and sustain interest. Additionally, this course will introduce you to Medical Terminology, build your vocabulary and empower you to communicate effectively. : AH 001 Title: Introduction to the Health Profession The course will provide you with an overview of the roles, responsibilities and the scope of the health care profession. In addition, it will guide you to develop the right attitude toward practicing the skills related to the medical lab profession. It will also introduce you to the lab professional organization, ethics, academic curriculum and technical responsibilities of the lab profession. : EDU 001 Title: Study Skills This course enables you as a new student to take control of your own learning. The course helps you work out sensible solutions to problems you might encounter as you work towards your degrees at the College of Health Sciences. In addition, it gives you different strategies that help you to be a good learner. : LFS 001 Title: Human Biology You will be introduced the concepts of cell structure and function and some basic anatomical terminology. You will explore the structural organization of the human body. You will be provided with a brief insight into the functional organization of the body and into various organs systems. You ll acquire the knowledge of how various body systems work together to maintain homeostasis. 6
7 College Requirement s Descriptions : ENG 114 Title: English for the Professions1 English for the Professions Level 1 is an intermediate level course that will expand and build your English language competencies and communicative abilities acquired at the Orientation English level of the Foundation Semester. This course will also further develop your language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing with emphasis on the language needs of healthcare professionals. This integrated-skills approach will enable you to succeed in your academic performance, and enhance your ability to communicate effectively in multi-cultural encounters within an English speaking community. : ENG 124 Title: English for the Professions II English for the Professions Level 2 will reinforce your language skills and equip you with higher level language skills of critical reading, inferential comprehension and analytical report writing. You will also be trained to write and present a research essay using APA guidelines. : LFS 118 Title: Anatomy and Physiology I This course will provide you with an in depth understanding of the structure and function of the human body with emphasis placed on the following body systems: the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive and respiratory systems. It will provide you with the basic knowledge needed for understanding of the Pathophysiology course. : LFS 217 Title: Microbiology You will be introduced to the basic concepts of microbiology with special emphasis on microbial ecology, epidemiology and pathogenesis of infectious diseases. As health care professionals, you will be equipped to apply the concepts of microbial growth control in preventing the spread of infections in your daily life and in your professional field. 7
