Elementary Health Education Teaching Module Dental Health Preschool Meghan Rediske Winona State University Department of Health, Exercise, and Rehabilitative Sciences Submitted to Ms. Darst in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Course HERS 320: Teaching Health in the Elementary Schools February 23, 2010

Description: The content area for this module is dental health. The three lessons were taught at St. Mary s Preschool in Heather McRae s classroom. During our lessons there were anywhere from 10 to 18 preschoolers present, between the ages of 3 and 4. The three lessons taught at St. Mary s preschool were about brushing your teeth, healthy and unhealthy foods for your teeth, and losing your teeth. The three other lessons included in this unit were about animal teeth, world tooth traditions, and a visit from a dentist. This module should ideally be taught during February, the national dental health month. The module could be taught throughout two weeks. This amount of time is appropriate in a preschool setting, because students often only come for 2 or 3 days a week. Broad Objectives for Dental Unit Cognitive: During this unit, students will be able to demonstrate how to properly brush their teeth, and the importance of doing so. During this unit, students will recognize how foods full of sugar can contribute to cavities. During this unit, students will be able to identify the difference between baby teeth and adult teeth, and why they lose their baby teeth. During this unit, students will be able to name and show where different types of teeth are located in their mouth. During this unit, student will gain knowledge about tooth traditions from around the world. Affective: During this unit, students will identify at least 3 healthy snakes for their teeth, and 3 unhealthy snacks for their teeth. During this unit, students will express concerns they may have about visiting the dentist office. During this unit, students will explain the importance of animals having teeth to speak and eat too. During this unit, students will discuss what happens after they lose their teeth. During this unit, students will formulate opinions about their favorite tooth traditions from around the world.

Psychomotor: During this unit, students will paint a large tooth with a toothbrush while practicing circular motions. During this unit, students will complete a worksheet by sorting out cut out food from magazines into two groups; foods that make our teeth happy/healthy and foods that make our teeth sad/unhealthy. After students have sorted foods properly they will glue them down. During this unit, students will construct a model of their mouth by using foam paper and gluing in marshmallows to represent the amount of baby teeth they have. (10 on top, and 10 on the bottom) During this unit, students will create a watercolor picture of a walrus. During this unit, students will illustrate a picture of their favorite tooth tradition from around the world. Materials Lesson 1: My Bright Smile- Written by: Kelly W. 7 Importance of Brushing, and How To Brush Properly By, Nikki Roberts Health Education Standard(s) and Performance Indicator(s): Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. o Identify that health behaviors affect personal health o Describe why it is important to seek health care Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors. o Identify how the family influences personal health and behaviors Standard 3:Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health. o Identify trusted adults and professionals who can help promote health Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health. o Differentiate between situations when a health-related decision can be made individually or when assistance is needed. Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health. o Identify a short-term personal health goal and take action toward achieving the goal Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. o Demonstrate healthy practices and behaviors to maintain or improve personal health Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health. o Make requests to promote personal health o Encourage peers to make positive health choices Goal: The goal of this lesson is to inform the students of the importance of taking care of your teeth. This includes teaching them about proper brushing techniques, and the importance of flossing. Behavioral Objectives: 1. During this lesson the students will be able to demonstrate how to properly brush their teeth by themselves and the importance of doing so. 2. During this lesson, the students will be able to identify out loud, when asked to do so, the correct number of times you should brush your teeth, and why you need to do so.

3. After this lesson, the students will be able to demonstrate and teach others how to properly brush their teeth. Time: 30 minutes to complete the entire lesson 2 minutes to welcome the students and explain the things we will be learning about. 1-2 minutes to read My Bright Smile, I Know What To Do 3 minutes for the saltine cracker experiment 2 minutes to play Brushing, by Raffi 2 minutes to go over the proper steps to brushing 15 minutes to complete the tooth painting activity 4 minutes to perform the puppet play and wrap up the lecture Integration: The topic of dental health can be integrated into the subjects of health and personal health. I think it could also be integrated into math, English and reading. There is always a way to incorporate it into these subjects, whether it s counting with teeth or reading stories about brushing and flossing. Materials: My Bright Smile- Written by: Kelly W. Lynch Illustrated by: Rurik Tyler Brush for a Bright Smile, I know what to do poster- Colgate-Palmolive Company 2009 The Best way to Brush Everyday poster- P & G Crest School Program 2001 Tag Board for big tooth art project Paint Tooth brushes for painting with Saltine crackers for experiment dealing with the difficulty of having no teeth (make sure there are no gluten allergies to the crackers before using) Puppets for puppet play Vocabulary: Dental Health: The behaviors we take part in to maintain healthy teeth Dentist: Someone who looks at your teeth and makes sure they are healthy Plaque: Germs that collect on our teeth and cause cavities Fluoride toothpaste: A paste used for cleaning and protecting your teeth Flossing: The process of cleaning in between your teeth with dental floss Cavities: A pitted hole in your tooth Procedure: 1. Start off by welcoming the class and informing them what we will be learning about dental health in class today. 2. Explain the importance of brushing, flossing and taking good care of your teeth. (So the students have strong teeth with no cavities and so they have healthy adult teeth for their lives)

3. Read the book My Bright Smile, I know what to do! (CIRCLE TIME ON FLOOR) 4. Do the saltine cracker experiment. Have the students put their lips over their teeth to represent having no teeth. Then, have them try to talk to a neighbor. They will see how hard it is to speak with no teeth. Next, have the try to eat a saltine cracker (again, with their lips covering their teeth). This will be a even better example of how important teeth are, and how it is necessary to take care of them. 5. After the students hear brushing, go over the proper steps to brush your teeth, as seen in the Colgate Brush For A Bright Smile Poster.(STAY IN CIRCLE) a. Outside b. Inside c. Way in the back d. Behind the front teeth e. On your tongue 6. Play the song Brushing by Raffi and have the kids practice brushing along with the song. 7. After the song is completed, have students take their toothbrushes back to their seats. Tell the students that they are going to continue to practice brushing their teeth properly by practicing while painting. 8. Begin the toothbrush painting activity. The students will receive a tag board cut out of a tooth. They will each receive a paper plate with paint on it. They will then dip their toothbrushes into the paint and paint their tag board tooth cut out. They will apply what they learned about proper brushing into how they paint the tooth. 9. To close class I will perform a puppet show dealing with the importance of proper brushing. This will reinforce everything they learned today in this lesson. Modifications/Enrichments/Extensions: An extension we could do, would be to give every student string, and have them practice flossing between a partners finger, as if they were flossing their teeth. A modification we could do in this lesson while we do the art project would be, if we have some students who are having trouble staying on task, only give them one color to paint with during our art project to try to help them focus a bit better. Home & Family Involvement: I will encourage the students to go home, and share what they have learned about proper dental health with their families. I will make sure to let the students know that it is important to share the things they have learned with their family and their friends, so they too can have healthy happy teeth. This will help the students be able to speak their needs, and try to make healthier decisions with the things they eat and drink and their daily habits.

They can take home the steps to brushing your teeth properly, to hang in their bathrooms so they can see it each night. Resources: Heather M. Dental health packet. Saint Mary s preschool. February 1, Healthy and Unhealthy Food for Teeth By, Meghan Rediske Health Education Standards and Performance Indicators: STANDARD 1 Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health Identify that healthy behaviors affect personal health Describe why it is important to seek health care. STANDARD 3 Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health Identify trusted adults and professionals who can help promote health. STANDARD 7 Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks Demonstrate healthy practices and behaviors to maintain or improve personal health. Goal: Students will understand the importance of eating healthy food to keep their teeth clean, and the benefits of seeing a dentist regularly. Behavioral Objectives-Assessment Evaluation: -During the good tooth/bad tooth bag activity, student will identify as a class which foods are healthy and unhealthy for their teeth. -After looking at a picture of a cavity, students will discuss how foods full of sugar can cause cavities. -After examining the eggs, students will talk about how the enamel on our teeth protects them. -During the sorting activity, students will be able to individually categorize 3 foods that are healthy and 3 foods that are unhealthy for their teeth. -While talking about the dentist, student will express concerns they have about visiting the dentist office. Time: 30 minute lesson

Materials: -Good tooth/bad tooth paper bags -Good/Bad food for your teeth worksheet -Examples of healthy and unhealthy foods (Healthy foods: apple, carrots, milk, yogurt, bread) (Unhealthy foods: chocolate, fruit snacks, cool aid, candy, chips) -food cutouts -dentist puppet -dentist pictures -cavity picture -Egg experiment -glue -Tooth Brush Song. By, Raffi Vocabulary: Cavity: a hole in your tooth Enamel: a hard coating around your tooth that helps protect it Dentist: a doctor that helps your keep teeth healthy Healthy Teeth: strong, white, clean teeth Unhealthy Teeth: weak, yellow, dirty teeth Procedure: 1. Review with students the importance of brushing their teeth. (1 minute) a. Ask students about what steps are involved in brushing your teeth properly. For example, it is important to brush your tongue, your back teeth, and brush in a circular motion. b. Students should also recall the importance of flossing. 2. Show preschoolers an egg, and talk with them about the importance of the hard shell. Discuss how the shell protects the egg. What would happen if the egg didn t have its shell? 3. Have preschoolers feel their teeth with their tongue. Tell them that the smooth coating on their teeth is called enamel, and it helps protect our teeth. (2 minutes) 4. Show preschoolers an egg. Then, show them an egg that has been sitting in vinegar for a couple days. Ask preschoolers how the egg changed. 5. Tell preschoolers that the vinegar made the shell of the egg break down. Explain that enamel on our teeth can be damaged the same way by the food we eat. (2 minutes) 6. Explain that eating the right foods can also help keep teeth healthy. Things like fruit, vegetables, milk, and crackers can help keep our teeth healthy and clean. These types of foods can help naturally clean our teeth like a toothbrush would. Also, things like milk and yogurt have calcium in them that make teeth nice and strong. Calcium is a vitamin that helps keep our bones and teeth strong. (2 minutes) 7. Introduce students to the good teeth, bad teeth activity. Have two paper bags. One with a happy tooth on it, and the other with a sad tooth. Have students

help sort different foods into the bags according to healthy or healthy food for your teeth. (4 minutes) 8. Discuss with students how you can eat sugary food in moderation, but if you eat lots of sugary food and don t take care of your teeth you can get cavities. (1 minute) 9. Show a picture of what a cavity looks like. (1 minute) 10. Explain that another way we can prevent ourselves from getting cavities is by visiting the dentist regularly. 11. Take out the dentist puppet, and talk about things you can expect to happen when you visit a dentist. (4 minutes) 12. Show pictures of what things you might see in a dentist office. 13. Ask students how they would feel being around these instruments. (2 minutes) 14. Review with students the importance of eating healthy foods to prevent cavities, and the importance of visiting a dentist to help keep teeth healthy. (1 minute) 15. Have students categorize pictures of food into good food, bad food categories. Students will do this individually at tables on a worksheet with cut out foods from ads. Explain that this activity is similar to the sorting foods activity you did at the beginning. 16. Walk around the classroom helping and assessing students with their ability to determine healthy and unhealthy foods. (10 minutes) 17. Ask the students to tell you two things they are going to tell their parents about what they learned about dental health today. 18. If time permits bring students back to the large group area and sing the toothbrush song. Modification/Enrichment/Extensions: If students are struggling with fine motor skills, they can sort the food and have assistance gluing items down. An extension activity could be talking about all the different parts of a tooth. Home and Family Involvement: You could send parents out the Brush Up on Dental Health sheet, to help inform parents of proper habits. You could also send home the How I Care For My Teeth parent letter, and Which Do My Teeth Need parent letter. Resources: School Rock Inc. (2008). Two Sets of Teeth and the Tooth Fairy By, Nikki Roberts and Meghan Rediske Health Education Standard(s) and Performance Indicator(s): Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health o Identify that healthy behaviors affect personal health o Describe ways to prevent communicable diseases Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors. o Identify how the family influences personal health practices and behaviors Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health. o Identify situations when a health-related decision is needed Goal: The goal of this lesson is to teach students about their baby teeth and their adult teeth. They will be learning why we have two sets of teeth, and why we loose our baby teeth to make room for our adult teeth. Students will also be learning about the tooth fairy. Behavioral Objectives (assessment) Evaluation: 1. During this lesson, the students will be able to tell the difference between their baby teeth, and their adult teeth, and the importance of having these two sets of teeth. Students will name 3 reasons we lose our baby teeth and make room for our adult ones. 2. The students will be able to locate the different teeth in their mouths and will be able to point these out when asked. Have everyone point to their molars, point to their canines, and point to their incisors. Time: 30 minutes to complete the entire lesson. 2 minutes to welcome students, and introduce what we will be learning about. 5-7 minutes to teach the content material. 3 minutes to read The Missing Tooth book. 15 minutes to complete the art project 5 minutes to hand out their dental health packets, and read the missing tooth poem to wrap the lesson up. Integration:

The topic of having two different sets of teeth can be integrated into a few others areas in school. You can incorporate this lesson into math, because students have to count out twenty marshmallows, or two sets of 10. This lesson also involves art, because the students get to create a replica of a mouth by using foam paper and marshmallows. Materials: Missing tooth poem Marshmallows (20 per student) Foam paper Colgate gift packages (1 per student) Picture of the mouth The Missing Tooth, by: Mary Packyard Different kinds of teeth poem Toothbrush, apple, candy, and dentist tool for review Vocabulary: Molars- The back teeth used for grinding food. Including the 6 th year molars, 12 year molars and your wisdom teeth Incisors- A tooth adapted for cutting or gnawing, located at the front of your mouth Canine- A sharp pointed tooth on either side of your upper and lower jaw Permanent teeth- Your adult teeth Enamel- Hard white substance covering the crown of your tooth Root- The part of the tooth embedded into your jaw that serves as support Gums- The pink material that surrounds the bottom of your teeth Procedure: 1. Greet students, and ask them to help you remember all the things you have talked about that keep our teeth strong, healthy, and clean. 2. Have a bag with a toothbrush, floss, apple, candy, and dentist tool in it. As students remember things you have talked about pull the item out of the bag. If students have trouble remembering something you can use the image in the bag as a reminder for them. 3. Explain that today you are going to be talking about the different kinds of teeth we have in our mouth, and what happens when we lose a tooth. 4. Ask students if all the teeth in their mouth feel like they are the same size and shape. 5. Explain that we have different types of teeth that are different shapes and sizes, and are used for different jobs in our mouth. 6. Show students the mouth picture, and point out where our incisors, canines, and molars can be found in our mouth. 7. Recite the different types of teeth poem for students. Then, have them repeat each line after you.

8. Next, have children count the number of teeth in the picture. Explain that children only have 20 teeth, but after they lose their baby teeth and new ones grow in they have 32 teeth in all. 9. Tell them that loosing teeth is normal, and our bodies do this because we need to get rid of our weaker baby teeth, to make room for our strong adult teeth. 10. Explain that your adult teeth are you permanent teeth and they are much stronger than your baby teeth. This is important because as we get older, the things we eat and the things we drink effect our teeth, and we want to have the strongest teeth possible. This is why it s important to lose your baby teeth, and to take good care of your adult teeth. 11. Next, explain what most children do when they lose their baby teeth. Tell them about the tooth fairy, and how if you hide your tooth under your pillow, she comes in the middle of the night and replaces it with money. 12. Ask the children what they think the tooth fairy looks like, and what she does with all the teeth she collects. If a child outs the tooth fairy, be calm and don t make it into a big deal Just explain that if the children have questions about if the tooth fairy is real or not, they can ask their parents when they get home 13. Read the book The Missing Tooth, by Mary Packard 14. Ask the students questions throughout the story to check for comprehension. 15. After we finish talking about the tooth fairy, explain the art project we will be creating. 16. We will be making mini mouths out of foam paper and marshmallows. 17. Explain to students that they need to put a line of glue on the edge of both sides of the oval, and place 10 marshmallows on one side, and 10 on the other. 18. Ask for questions. 19. Hand out the art supplies to each student. 20. After the students have completed their art projects, have each student tell you one thing they are going to share with their parents that they learned about dental health. 21. After they have successfully completed this give them their dental health packet. 22. Close the class by reading them the tooth poem: A tooth fell out, and left a space so big my tongue could touch my face. And every time I smile, I show a space where something used to grow. I miss my tooth as you can guess, but then, I have to brush one less! Modifications/Enrichment/Extension: For this lesson an extension we could do could be; o We could bring in a model of a mouth, to show the kids what a mouth actually looks like. This would help so the kids could see what their teeth look like in their mouth. Have coloring sheets to fill time if needed at the end of the lesson.

Home & Family Involvement: Encourage the students to go home, and share what they learned with their families. They can share the foam mouth they made, and maybe even remember the different kinds of teeth they have. Resources: McRae, H. (2010). Dental health packet. Saint Mary s Preschool. DLTK. ( ). Animal Teeth Lesson By, Meghan Rediske Health Education Standards and Performance Indicators: STANDARD 5 Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health Identify situations when a health-related decision is needed. STANDARD 6 Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health Identify who can help when assistance is needed to achieve a personal health goal. Goals: Students will be able to recognize the similarities and differences between the functions and appearance of animal teeth and human teeth. Behavioral Objectives-Assessment/Evaluation: -While having a class discussion, students will explain the importance of animals having teeth to help them speak and eat too. -After reading the story Tooth Trouble, students will create a watercolor picture of a walrus and be able to identify what a tusk is. Time: 30 minute lesson Integration: Talking about the characteristics of other species, relates to science as well. Materials: -Tooth Trouble. By, Jane Clarke and Cecilia Johansson -Pictures of animals teeth

-Picture of a Walrus for every student -white tempera paint -paint brushes Vocabulary: Tusks: a long pointed tooth. Healthy Teeth: strong, white, clean teeth Unhealthy Teeth: weak, yellow, dirty teeth Vet: a doctor that helps take care of animals Procedure: 1.) Review with students different things you have talked about to help keep teeth strong and healthy. (1 minute) 2.) Ask preschoolers if people are the only things that have teeth. 3.) After they conclude that animals have teeth too. Talk with children about why animals need teeth too. Would animals be able to eat, would dogs be able to bark? (2 minutes) 4.) Have children try to bark like a dog without using their teeth. 5.) Introduce the book Tooth Trouble. 6.) Talk about what the children see on the cover, and explain that walruses have two large teeth called tusks.(2 minutes) 7.) Read the story, and ask question students about what they think the Walrus should do about his hurting tusk. (5 minutes) 8.) After the story ask students if they have ever seen animals at the dentist office. 9.) Explain that vets help keep animals teeth healthy, and that animals must too eat things that naturally help keep their teeth strong and healthy. (2 minutes) 10.) Show children pictures of animal s mouths, and have them guess who the animal is. (5 minutes) 11.) Then, have students make predictions about how many teeth they think animals have based off the How many teeth do you think I have? worksheet. (3 minutes) 12.) Finally, have students paint the walrus picture with watercolors. Then, have students paint over the tusks with white tempera paint. (10 mintues) 13.) Before, students line up at the door for gym class, have students individual tell you one thing about the importance of keeping your teeth healthy. Modification/Enrichment/Extensions: As an extension, you could talk with students about the variety of ways animals use their teeth, and the different sizes of teeth. If you have the resources, you could show examples of different animal teeth such as shark teeth, and horse teeth. Finally, this would be a great opportunity to have a vet come in and talk about how they work to keep animals teeth healthy and clean.

Home and Family Connection: Have students bring their pictures home, and share them with their families. Resources: Clarke, J. (2005). Tooth Trouble. New York: Scholastic Inc.. Having a Dentist Come into the Classroom By, Nikki Roberts and Meghan Rediske Health Education Standard (s) And Performance Indicator(s): Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. o Identify that healthy behaviors affect personal health o Recognize that there are multiple dimensions of health o Describe why it is important to seek health care Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors o Identify how the family influences personal health practices and behaviors Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health o Identify trusted adults and professionals who can help promote health Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks. o Demonstrate listening skills to enhance health Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health. o Identify situations when a health-related decision is needed Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health. o Identify a short-term personal health goal and take action toward achieving the goal o Identify who can help when assistance is needed to achieve a personal health goal Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. o Demonstrate healthy practices and behaviors to maintain or improve personal health o Demonstrate behaviors that avoid or reduce health risks

Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health. o Make requests to promote personal health Goal: The goal of this lesson is to bring in a dentist who can reinforce all the information we have taught the students this week. He will go over most of what we learned, and then also cover new material that is specific to a dentist and going to the dentist office. Behavioral Objectives: 1. While the speaker is in the classroom, the students will demonstrate being good listeners, and speaking only when they are asked to. 2. The students will actively participate in the presentation when the speaker asks. 3. When the dentists ask questions, students will demonstrate what they have learned throughout the dental unit. Time: 30 minutes for the dentist to teach the students. Integration: Having the dentist come in and teach the students is helpful in many ways, and can be included to many aspects of their lives. Not only will the dentist teach them of ways to take care of your teeth, ways to have a healthy mouth, and ways to prevent future damage to your teeth, but he can also teach them good life lessons. Some life lessons that could be grasped from this would be keeping good routines, setting goals, and meeting your goals. Materials: The dentist Pictures, models, posters, books, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, are all examples of materials the dentist may bring in. Vocabulary: Permanent teeth- Your adult teeth. Molars- The back teeth used for grinding food. Including the 6 th and 12 year molars, and your wisdom teeth. Canine- A sharp pointed tooth on either side of your upper and lower jaw. Incisors- A tooth adapted for cutting or gnawing, located at the front of your mouth. Enamel- Hard white substance covering the crown of your tooth. Root- The part of the tooth embedded into your jaw that serves as support. Gums- The pink material that surrounds the bottom of your teeth.

Cavity- Hole in your tooth that is a result of not properly caring for them. Whatever other terms the dentist uses Procedure: 1. Start off by welcoming the students to class. 2. Inform them that we will be having a very special guest come into class today. 3. Tell them they will be meeting a dentist, who is going to share everything he knows about teeth, and their proper care. 4. Inform them that they need to be on their best behavior, and that they must be polite listeners and to participate and try to answer any questions our dentist has for them. 5. Hand over the spotlight to our dentist. 6. After the dentist leaves, we will complete a tooth mobile. Student will cut a paste a picture of a toothbrush, dentist, apple, and toothpaste on 4 different teeth. 7. The teacher will then staple all four teeth together as a 3D image. 8. These mobiles can hang in the classroom for the month of February, dental health month. These images will help remind students how to properly care for their teeth. Modifications/Enrichments/Extension: An aid will be in the class to assist with anyone who needs the extra help. We could also have a dentist office related coloring sheet, or picture game for a time filler. Home & Family Involvement: Encourage the students to go home, and share what they learned from the dentist with their families. Eventually, student will take their mobile home. If the dentist gives the kids any dental health supplies, encourage them to go home, show them to their families, and show what you do with each item. Resources: Nikki Roberts Meghan Rediske Tooth Traditions from Around the World By, Meghan Rediske Health Education Standards and Performance Indicators: STANDARD 4 Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks Demonstrate healthy ways to express needs, wants and feelings Demonstrate Listening skills to enhance health.

STANDARD 6 Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health Identify a short-term personal health goal and take action toward achieving the goal. Goals: By providing students with several examples, they will become familiar with different tooth traditions around the world. Behavioral Objectives-Assessment/Evaluation: -After reading Arthur Tricks the Tooth Fairy, student will discuss what happens when they lose their teeth. -While talking about teeth traditions around the world, students will practice sitting still and listening quietly. -While talking about students favorite traditions, students will formulate opinions. -After talking about tooth traditions from around the world, students will gain knowledge of different tooth traditions people have around the world. -While illustrating their favorite tooth tradition, students will demonstrate fine motor skills. Time: 30 minute lesson Integration: During this lesson students will be learning about different cultures, and the locations of different countries. This lesson can be integrated nicely with social studies. Materials: - Arthur Tricks the Tooth Fairy. By, Marc Brown -world map -paper -markers -crayons -broken seashells Vocabulary: Geographic location: where a country is located on a map El Raton: a magic mouse that takes teeth in Mexico Tooth fairy: a magic fairy that takes children s teeth in the United States Procedure: 1.) Ask students what happens after they lose a tooth. 2.) Let students share things that they know about the tooth fairy. (3 minutes0

3.) Introduce the book, Arthur Tricks the Tooth Fairy. 4.) Read the story, and ask student comprehensions questions while reading it. (5 minutes) 5.) Then, explain to students that the tooth fairy exists in America, but children in many other countries have different things that they do when they lose their teeth. 6.) Get out a map of the world. 7.) Point to Mexico, and explain that when children lose a tooth in Mexico they leave it in a box by their bed. El Raton, the magic mouse takes the tooth and leaves money. 8.) Point to Costa Rica on the map. Explain that in Costa Rica after a girl loses her tooth, her mother takes the tooth and has it plated in gold for her daughter to wear as an earring. 9.) Point to Brazil on the map. Explain that in Brazil they recite a poem, Lovely birds, dear birds, take away this tooth of mine and bring another one to me. The birds only take clean teeth so it is important to brush your teeth every day. 10.) Point to Cameroon on the map. Tell students that in Cameroon children throw their tooth on the roof and shout, Take this bad tooth and bring me a new one. Then, they hop around their house on one foot. (You could have children stand up and act this out). 11.) Point to Oman on the map. Explain that in Omen children face the sun and throw their tooth as far as they can. They say, Oh mighty sun, take this tooth, play with it, and do not forget to bring it back. 12.) Point to Sweden on the map. In Sweden children put their tooth in a glass of water. In the morning the tooth will be gone and a coin will be in the glass. 13.) Point to a picture of Indonesia. Explain that in Indonesia after children loose a tooth they throw it backwards over their roof. They try to throw it straight, because the straighter they throw it the straighter their new tooth will come in. 14.) Point to Korea on the map. Tell students that in Korea children throw their tooth on the roof and say, Blackbird, blackbird, my old tooth I give to you. Bring me a new tooth. 15.) (all of these stories should take approximately 10 minutes to share) 16.) Ask students which traditions they liked best, and why. (3 minutes) 17.) Talk with students about how people all over the world have different traditions. 18.) Next, have children illustrate their favorite tooth tradition from around the world. They can do this with crayons, or markers. (10 minutes) 19.) Lastly, have students symbolize the tooth in their picture by using part of a broken seashell. 20.) To conclude, have students reflect on how they felt after learning about all of these different traditions from around the world. Modification/Enrichment/Extensions:

As an extension activity you could have students make protective pockets to put their tooth in under their pillow for the tooth fairy. To help students more clearly understand what countries these traditions originated from, have large world map with the countries you are going to talk about outlined, or colored differently. If you have people from other countries available you could have them come in and share a different tooth tradition they may have practiced. Home and Family Involvement: Students can take home their pictures to share with their family members. Resources: Beeler, Selby, and Brian Karas. Throw Your Tooth on the Roof. 24 Dear Parents, My name is Meghan Rediske, and along with my partner Nikki Roberts we have been teaching lessons about dental health to Mrs. McRae s preschool class. Working with you children has been a great experience! This week we talked about proper ways to brush your teeth, how to floss your teeth, and the importance of eating healthy food for your teeth. Today we are sending home a tooth brushing and toothpaste that Dr. Miller s dentist office donated. Please encourage your children to brush their teeth everyday and practice habits that keep their teeth strong and healthy! Thanks! Meghan Rediske and Nikki Roberts
