The speakers will emphasise how to manage medically compromised patients and look at minimally invasive interventions available to achieve this. The overall aim is to provide an update in developments in oral surgery including: An overview of minimising risk to the trigeminal nerve in dental practice. Highlight the development of minimal access and bone sparing oral surgery. To provide a framework for the management of medically compromised patients. Illustrate the presentation, investigation and management of obstructive salivary gland disease. 4 S p e a k e r s Tara Renton Professor in Oral Surgery, King s College London Dental Institute Tara is a dentist with a particular interest in trigeminal nerve injuries and pain. After completing her Oral and Maxillofacial surgical training in Melbourne, Tara undertook a PhD in trigeminal nerve injury at King s College London (KCL) She was later appointed Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University London and then was awarded her Chair in 2006 at KCL. Over the past three years, Tara has led the teaching of dental students and she has established an academic training programme which now has eight Oral Surgery SpRs. In collaboration with the Institute of Psychiatry at King s and Imperial College, Tara and her collaborators have established an international leading trigeminal nerve injury and pain research programme at KCL. Tara is the National Advisor for Oral Surgery, she is a council member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) and is an elected member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England Dental Faculty Committee. Michael Escudier Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine, King s College London Dental Institute Michael completed undergraduate dental and medical training at Guy s Dental Hospital and St Bartholomew s Hospital before returning to King s College London (KCL) in He was awarded a South Thames Research Training Fellowship in 1996 to investigate the use of lithotripsy in the management of salivary calculi leading to the award of an MD. He attained his Fellowship from the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) in 1997, was appointed Lecturer in 1998, completed oral medicine specialist training in 2002 and was appointed Honorary Consultant to Guys and St Thomas (GSTT) NHS Foundation Trust in He is currently Senior Lecturer and Head (KCL) and Clinical Lead (GSTT) of Oral Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds the positions of Deputy Director of Education (Assessment) within the Dental Institute as well as Postgraduate Health Schools representative on the College Assessment Board for KCL. He was awarded Fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practice in 2008 in recognition of his work in developing the new Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties examination and a King s Award (2011) for his work in assessment. events@bda.org
