In addition to providing attendees with valuable information aimed at better understanding trends in dental education, Dr. Valachovic will offer a framework for Council discussions at the 2018 ADEA Fall Meetings. Drawing upon ADEA s survey and demographic data, key findings pertinent to the dental professions will be presented. Describe key trends in health care and dental education. Delineate how demographic trends are impacting the dental professions. Recognize the implications of change in dental education for dental schools, allied dental programs, and advanced dental education programs. Ardenghi, D.D.S., M.A., M.Sc., Diploma in Prosthodontics, FRCD(C), Acting Associate Dean Academic, Assistant Professor of Prosthodontics, University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry The concepts of inclusive excellence, intersectionality and a humanistic climate are increasingly associated with well-being and resilience. Intersectionality is based on the principle that individuals are multifaceted combinations of multiple social identities that intersect and are complex. As a result, when negotiating environments and power systems, marginalized groups may struggle with and against these identities in a need to preserve and protect self. The Commission on Dental Accreditation speaks to the need for humanistic environments in academic dental institutions that focus on respect, tolerance, understanding, and concern for others. Recent American Dental Education Association Page 4 of 7

5 headlines bring to light the range of community challenges and encounters associated with harassment and implicit bias and the resulting dangers and tensions within educational institutions and society. Research on the impact of implicit bias and discrimination shows they are linked to physiological responses and psychosocial stressors that can lead to adverse health status, behavioral patterns and health disparities. This plenary will explore the stressors and health issues associated with discrimination and inequality. Efforts to support inclusive excellence and intersectionality will be examined as a means of fostering well-being, resiliency and a humanistic environment in dental schools and programs. Using short scenarios, participants will discuss the challenges associated with creating a humanistic environment and how diversity and inclusion efforts can support resiliency and well-being for all faculty, staff and students at dental education institutions. Define inclusive excellence, implicit bias, intersectionality and humanistic environment. Explore the impact of discrimination and inequality and associated psychosocial stressors and health issues in the context of intersectionality. Discuss opportunities to use diversity and inclusion programming as a means of understanding intersectionality and creating a humanistic culture that fosters well-being and resiliency for all faculty, staff and students in dental education.
