Professional Development Hours Log- Fall 205 9/26/5 Event: Continuing Education Speaker: Stacey D. Quo, DDS, MS Topic: Sleep Disordered Breathing, Myofunctional Therapy and the Role of the RDH 4 This topic was very informative for me because it is an area we have not covered in class. Dr. Quo primarily talked about sleep apnea in children and how it is underdiagnosed and can be misunderstood for ADD or ADHD. One of the most eye opening sections in her course what the fact that, as hygienists, we are able to see the signs and refer patients to sleep disorder specialists. 0/5/5 Clinic Observation 3 I observed DH2 for the second time in clinic. Because it was the beginning of the quarter I focused on unit set up, breakdown, and infection control. 0/6/5 Speaker: Janice Bruce Topic: Sales rep. from Q-Optics During the lunch and learn Ms. Bruce talked about Q-Optic magnification loups and the different advantages there are with their specific loupes. 0/8/5 0/20/5 0/20/5 Event: Continuing Education Speaker: Nik Desai, DMD, MD Topic: Oral Pathology: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Speaker: Lisa Yumen Topic: Crest/ Oral-B Event: ADHA Fall Student Chapter Speaker: Peninsula and Santa Clara Components Topic: Explaining the ADHA and CDHA 2.5 This was an excellent and very informative class. Dr. Desai spoke about different lesions commonly found in the mouth and how to distinguish oral cancer. The most interesting part about this class was the fact that we just covered this topic is class. Many concepts that I was confused about was clarified during his talk. Lisa Yumen spoke to the class about the different products Proctor and Gamble sell. Crest/ Oral-B is one of the many products PG owns. One interesting product she showed and gave to us was their new electric Oral-B toothbrushes. The brush is made to osculate and pulse the bristles around each tooth, reducing gingivitis. The ADHA has done so much for the carrier of dental hygiene. The different components came to speak to DH and DH2 about how much the ADHA can help and provide for hygienists. The CDHA is a great way to connect with other fellow hygienists and find job opportunities when finishing the program. 0/2/5 Clinic Observation 3 I observed DH2 for the third time in clinic. I learned more about how to perform E/I exams and periodontal charting. Total Fall 205 Quarter Hours: 5.5 Cumulative hours: 5.5
Professional Development Hours Log- Winter 206 /2/6 Event: ADHA Winter Chapter The meeting updated us and informed us about the upcoming ADHA opportunities. We discussed the Oral Cancer awareness walk that will be held on April 9 th and our participation with the walk. We also heard from Giana Ngo about the Vietnam trip the 2 nd year dental hygiene students went on. /9/6 (webinar) Speaker: Brix Gatti Topic: GumChucks This was a fascinating webinar about a new flossing aid. Just like in the name they look like nunchucks but with floss instead of a chain. It is a great new floss for caretakers or parents who want to stay out of biting range but still accomplishing a c-shape floss technique. /9/6 Medical/ Dental Brigades meeting (Foothill College) 2 The meeting shared the opportunity for students interested in going on the trip to Honduras in Summer 206. It expanded on what is expected of the students and how much should be raised by each student. Some past experiences were also shared in the meeting. It is a great opportunity to reach out to very needy communities in Honduras. /25/6 Clinic Observation 3 This was the 4 th observation I had done in the dental hygiene clinic. It is very interesting having a new prospective each time I observe because of the new content we are learning in class. We are working on our patient assessment projects with our classmates so learning and seeing how the 2 nd year students were doing it helped clarify our assignment. 2/2/6 Speaker: Amber Abdallah Topic: Sensodyne/Pronamel/Biotene Amber Abdallah, the representative for Sensodyne discussed how and why Sensodyne toothpaste is one of the most effective sensitive relief products. The active ingredient in Sensodyne is Potassium nitrate, which is the only desensitizing product that inactivates the nerve response in the pulp, through the dentin. 3/6/6 Event: CDHA Student Regional Conference Speaker: Dr. Paul Glassam, DDS, MA, MBS Topic: Teledentistry and Interim Therapeutic Restorations (ITRs). 6 The CDHA student regional conference held in Concord. Dr. Paul Glassam, DDS, MA, MBS was the main speaker at the conference. He spoke about Teledentistry and Interim Therapeutic Restorations (ITRs). These are new restorations that we are able to do for underserved communities to place a composite filling over decay. Representatives from the Dental Hygiene Committee of California also provided information on licensure requirements. Total Winter 206 Quarter Hours: 4 Cumulative Hours: 29.5
Professional Development Hours Log- Spring 206 4/5/6 Speaker: Susan Manning Topic: Colgate Susan Manning talked about the outreach and work Colgate is doing to give back to those in need. I enjoyed her meeting the most since she mentioned whatever is spent on Colgate products, they give a percentage back to those in need. She also provided us with great resources to give to our patients. 4/2/6 Event: ADHA Winter Chapter The student chapter meeting was held at Foothill College. It discussed the importance in the role the CDA and CDHA plays in the career field. The local components are a great resource for networking and community outreach. Maintaining a membership is important in order to support the organization. 4/9/6 Speaker: Scott Peterson Topic: Johnson & Johnson Mr. Peterson discussed the prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis in the population. He discussed the reduction of plaque biofilm and gingivitis through the addition of an antiseptic rinse like Listerine. He talked about the many different rinses and flosses available in market. 4/20/6 Clinic Observation 3 Since I was worried about the treatment plan and OHI, I paid attention to the whole procedure of writing the treatment plan based on clinical findings and X-rays, and explaining to the patient. After screening the whole oral cavity, the operator discussed the treatment plan with the patient and emphasized on home care education. I gained valuable information about OHI education. 4/29/6 East Valley San Jose Medical Center (Off campus clinic observation) 3 I completed my off campus rotation observation at San Jose East Valley dental clinic. In this clinic, children and pregnant women were the most frequent patients. The most common procedures provided to the patients included X-rays, prophylaxis, and fillings for kids. Total Spring 206 Quarter Hours: 9 Cumulative Hours: 38.5
Professional Development Hours Log- Summer & Fall 206 9/8/6 9/9/6 9/0/6 //6 /29/6 The cda convention was a great opportunity to meet other Event: CDA Convention dental professionals and learn about different products. Topic: Crest/ Oral-B 2 Several of my classmates and I helped at the Crest booth at the conference. We offered people to try their new electric toothbrush and toothpaste. These conventions are a good way to learn about products for patient education. Mr. Peterson discussed the prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis in the population. He discussed the reduction Speaker: Scott Peterson of plaque biofilm and gingivitis through the addition of an antiseptic rinse like Listerine. He talked about the many Topic: Johnson & Johnson different rinses and flosses available on the market. Dental decay is one of the most common infectious disease in children. As dental hygienists we need to be proactive and prevent dental caries. Fluoride is an active ingredient Speaker: Marti Santizo in all Colgate toothpastes. Ms. Santizo discussed the process of dental caries and the different products Colgate Topic: Colgate manufactures. Total Summer & Fall 206 Quarter Hours: 23 Cumulative Hours: 6.5 Professional Development Hours Log- Winter 207 /7/7 /24/7 /27/7- /29/7 /30/7 2/6/5 Event: ADHA Winter Chapter Speaker: Amber Abdallah Topic: GlaxoSmithkine Event: DH Board Review course Location: San Rafael Event: CDHA Winter Chapter Speaker: Bay area Components Speaker: Lisa Yumen Topic: Crest/ Oral-B 27 The meeting updated us and informed us about the upcoming ADHA opportunities. We also heard from Giana Ngo about the Vietnam trip the 2 nd year dental hygiene students went on. Amber Abdallah, the representative from GlaxoSmithkine, which is a company that produces many products, such as Sensodyne, Pronamel, Biotene. She explained that Potassium nitrate enters the dentinal tubules and causes depolarization resulting it desensitivity. Stannous Fluoride is another active ingredient that is antimicrobial, antisensitivity (occludes the tubules) and anti-cavity This was a 3-day conference preparing us for our written board exam. Every speaker was well prepared and knowledgeable in the subjects they were covering. It was worth going to refresh my memory on subjects covered in st year as well as new information about our carriers. The CDHA has done so much for the carrier of dental hygiene. This meeting was held by our local CDHA component. They spoke to both DH and DH2 about what the CDHA can do for us as students as well as what they can do for us as future dental hygienists. The CDHA is a great way to connect with other fellow hygienists and find job opportunities when finishing the program. Lisa Yumen spoke to the class about the different products Proctor and Gamble sell. Crest/ Oral-B is one of the many products PG owns. One interesting product she showed and gave us samples of was their new manual toothbrush. The brush bristles were made at 45 O angles to reach the interproximal areas, making it more effective. Total Winter 207 Quarter Hours: 3 Cumulative Hours: 92.5
Professional Development Hours Log- Spring 207 4/27/7 Speaker: Lisa Okamoto Topic: Employee rights Lisa discussed employee rights and what laws there are out there to protect us in our jobs. She explained that we should research the job before accepting it to make sure it s something we want to commit to. Knowing our rights as 5/2/7 5/6/7 5/8/7 Speaker: Ailine Topic: Dental Power Speaker: Jerry Gin Topic: Nuvora (dry mouth) Event: House of Delegates preparation meeting Speaker: Diana Louie 6/2/7-6/4/7 Event: CDHA House of Delegates 2 Total Spring 207 Quarter Hours: 25 Cumulative Hours: 7.5 employees is very important. Ailine is a representative from a temp agency in San Francisco area. She discussed what our responsibilities would be and how to start looking for jobs. She explained the employment outlook for dental hygienists and how easy it is to get placed in an office if we apply. Jerry Gin is the founder of Nuvora, which is a company that produces products that relieve Xerostomia. He began with a discussion about the condition and then explained how the products assist patients with this issue. The meeting was held at the San Mateo County Dental Society s office. They discussed the standing rules, topics, events and timelines for the weekend at the House of Delegates meeting in June 207. The meeting was mandatory for everyone attending the House of Delegates weekend to prepare everyone. This professional meeting was held in San Diego. Every year it is held to vote on different dental hygiene issues. This was the first year that CDHA divided from ADHA. The conference was informative and impressed me how much our organization can help improve our career.
% of subjects in the experimental group had no bleeding at Week 6 compared to 0% in the control group. See Figure 2.
