3 Healthy vs. Unhealthy Gums Healthy Gums Healthy gums are pink in color and do not bleed when brushing and flossing. Unhealthy Gums Unhealthy gums are swollen and reddened. Bleeding may occur when brushing or flossing.

4 Healthy vs. Unhealthy Bone Healthy Bone Healthy bone is the supporting structure for the teeth. Unhealthy Bone Plaque and calculus contribute to an unhealthy condition. Inflammation of gums can lead to the progression of gum disease and the deterioration of bone.

5 Periodontal Measurements A healthy sulcus is 0-3 mm deep. It can be cleaned easily by brushing and flossing. When periodontal disease is present, pockets may form. More than 4 mm is considered diseased. Deep pockets are difficult to clean and therefore bacteria thrive.

6 Periodontal Treatment Periodontal Disease is treated by removing the plaque and calculus which has adhered to the tooth. Once the tooth surface is clean additional treatments may be recommended. 7 Proper Brushing 1 2 Place bristles along the gumline at a 45 angle. Bristles should contact both the tooth surface and extend under the gumline. Gently brush the outer tooth surfaces of 2-3 teeth using a vibrating back, forth and rolling motion. Move the brush to the next group of 2-3 teeth and repeat. GUM Technique Deep Clean

8 Proper Brushing 3 Maintain a 45 angle with the bristles contacting the tooth surface and gumline. Gently brush using a back and forth rolling motion along all of the inner tooth surfaces. 4 Tilt the brush vertically behind the front teeth. Make several up and down strokes using the front half of the brush. 5 Place the brush against the biting surface of the teeth and use a gentle back and forth motion. Brush the tongue from back to front to remove odor-producing bacteria. GUM Technique Deep Clean

9 Proper Flossing 1 2 Wind 18" of floss around the middle fingers of each hand. Pinch floss between the thumbs and index fingers, leaving 1-2 inches between fingers. Use the thumbs to direct floss between contacts of the upper teeth. Keep a 1-2 inch length of floss taut between the fingers. Use index fingers to guide the floss between contacts of the lower teeth. 10 Proper Flossing Gently guide the floss between the teeth by using a 3 4 zig-zag motion. DO NOT SNAP FLOSS BETWEEN YOUR TEETH. Contour the floss around the side of the tooth. Slide the floss up and down against the tooth surface and under the gumline. Then switch to the tooth surface on other side of papilla. Floss each tooth thoroughly with a clean section of floss. 16 /MD Implant Care Use GUM EasyThread Floss to clean implant posts. Insert the green threader end between posts and pull back through the other side of post. Grasp the free end and criss-cross cord. Use a shoe shine motion up and down the surface of the post. Use a nylon coated GUM interdental brush or GUM Soft-Picks to clean posts and underside of prosthesis. 18 Tooth Sensitivity Exposed Dentin Gum recession caused by disease or aggressive brushing exposes dentinal tubules. Exposed dentinal tubules are the source of sensitivity. Stimuili (cold, hot, sweet, acid) applied to a tooth surface with open tubules cause the fluid in the tubules to move rapidly, which causes sensitivity.
