1 ANNUAL REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE DENTAL COUNCIL OF INDIA FOR THE YEAR (COVERING PERIOD FROM TO ) DENTAL COUNCIL OF INDIA The Dental Council of India is a statutory body constituted by an Act of Parliament viz. Dentists Act, 1948 (XVI of 1948) with the main objective of regulating the Dental Education, Dental Profession, Dental ethics in the country and recommend to the Govt. of India to accord permission to start a Dental College, start higher course & to increase of seats. For this purpose the Council periodically carries out inspection to ascertain the adequacy of courses and facilities available for the teaching of Dentistry. This Council had received 278 applications in prescribed form/scheme from the Central Government for (i) establish new Dental colleges (ii) starting MDS Courses (iii) increase of seats in BDS/MDS/PG Diploma Courses for evaluation & recommendation in accordance with the provision of the Section 10A of the Dentists Act, During the said period, the Council had recommended to the Central Government to grant its permission to (i) establish 5 new dental colleges, (ii) start MDS course in 145 specialities at 46 dental colleges (iii) start PG Diploma course in 1 specialities at 1 dental colleges (iv) increase of admission capacity in BDS courses at 5 dental colleges, increase of admission capacity in MDS courses in 70 specialities at 32 dental colleges and increase of admission capacity in PG Diploma course in 1 speciality at 1 dental college. The Central Government on recommendation of the Council had permitted 5 new dental colleges, for starting of MDS Course in 58 specialities at 29 dental colleges, for starting of PG Diploma course at 1 dental colleges in 1 specialities, for increase of seats in BDS course at 5 dental colleges, for MDS course at 30 dental colleges in 79 specialities and for PG Diploma course at 1 dental college in 1 speciality. This Council had recommended to the Central Government to allow/ renew its permission for 2 ndi3rdb4thi5th " no th year in BDS course at 24 dental colleges and for 2ndi3rdmth th /Pyear with increased intake capacity in 16 dental colleges, allow/renew its permission for 2nd/3rd/4th year in MDS course at 111 dental colleges in 524 specialities and for 2nd/3rd/4t h year with increased intake capacity at 68 dental colleges in 301 specialities, allow/renew its permission for 2"d/3' year in PG Diploma course at 5 dental colleges in 6 specialities and for 2nd year with increased intake capacity at 1 dental college in 1 speciality. The Central Government on recommendation of the Council had allowed/ renewed its permission for 2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th year in BDS course at 23 dental colleges and for 2nd/3rd/4th/5th with increased intake capacity at 15 dental colleges, allowed/renewed its permission for 2ncli3rd th /4 year in MDS course at 112 dental colleges in 33 specialities and for 2ncli3rd th /4 with increased intake capacity in 11 specialities at 5 dental colleges, renewed its permission for 2 nd /3rd year in PG Diploma course at 1 dental colleges in 1 specialities and increase of seat in 0 speciality at 0 dental college. During this period 1475 inspections of the various Dental Colleges in the country had been carried out by the Council's Inspectors/ Visitors. This Council had taken decision to recommend to Central Government for recognition of the BDS/MDS/PG Diploma qualifications awarded by 41 Indian Universities under Section 10(2) of the Dentists Act, The Government of India on the recommendation of the Council had issued 48 notifications of recognition of BDS/MDS qualifications awarded by the 28 Indian Universities under Section 10(2) of the Dentists Act, The Council had recognised the Dental Mechanic Course at 0 dental colleges and Dental Hygienist Course at 0 dental college. The Govt. of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi has sanctioned an amount of Rs.20 lakhs as Grant-in-aid to the Council for the year (Col. (Retd.) r. S.. CONSTITUTION AND COMPOSITION: The Dental Council of India is constituted by an Act of Parliament The Dentists Act 1948 (XVI of 1948) with a view to regulate the Dental Education, Dental Profession and Dental Ethics, thereto-which came into existence in March, The Council is composed of 6 constituencies representing Central Government, State Government, Universities, Dental Colleges, Medical Council of India and the Private Practitioners of Dentistry. The Director-General of Health Services is Ex-Officio Member-both of the Executive Committee and General Body. The Council elects from themselves the President, Vice-President and the members of the Executive Committee. The elected President and the Vice-President are the Ex-Officio Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee is the governing body of this organisation, which deals with all procedural, financial and day-to-day activities and affairs of the Council. The Council is financed mainly by grants from the Govt. of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Deptt. of Health) though the other source of income of the Council is the 1/4 th share of fees realised every year by various State Dental Councils under section 53 of the Dentists Act, Inspection fee from the various Dental Institution for Inspecting under Section 15 of the Dentists Act, 1948 and application fee from the organisation to apply for permission to set up new Dental College, opening of higher Courses of study and increase of admission capacity in Dental Colleges under section 10A of the Dentists Act, 1948 as amended by the Dentists (Amendment) Act, II.
