1 Estimates of Prevalence of Mental Health Problems by Locality How can the level of mental illness now and in the future be estimated in order to plan services? It is possible to make estimates by locality of mental health problems, using the data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity in England : Results of Household Survey, applied to local authority and populations. The table below shows estimates for the, districts and boroughs and IES and West for people aged with mental health problems. These figures are not adjusted for deprivation so may underestimate levels in more deprived localities. The tables include: Anxiety and depression Poor mental health and distress People with personality s Other mental health problems Severe mental illness, including psychoses Conclusions Overall the analysis suggests there are more people in IES with mental health problems, due to larger population and deprivation is likely to have a further effect. Ipswich is estimated to have the highest number of people experiencing mental health problems. These figures are helpful in considering location of services and for comparison with figures based on service use and demand, e.g. QOF figures.
