Done lots lots more to do Our feet they don t just carry us through life. They let us experience freedom of movement and joie de vivre. They make us mobile... and yet they are probably among the parts of our body we tend to neglect most. Our LucRo shoes protect feet The feet of people suffering from diabetes require particular protection. As their illness progresses they can lose a sense of the well-being of their feet. Shoes which are too tight can pose a serious threat. An apparently harmless pressure point can develop unnoticed into a foot wound which does not heal. In the worst case, the sufferer may be faced with losing an entire foot. Our two shoe collections, LucRo classic and kinetic, allow diabetes sufferers to do something about their mobility. Protective shoes help them keep their feet healthy in their endeavour to limit the recurrence of open foot wounds. LucRo shoes provide effective medical protection, making them therapeutic aids. This means they can be prescribed by a specialist. Protecting feet means taking on responsibility and we are glad to put all our efforts towards doing just this. 6 Diabetes a widespread illness with many facets Special Shoes for People with Diabetes The diabetic foot... Poor metabolism over a long period of time which is common in diabetes sufferers requires them to be unusually vigilant about their bodies. Diabetic foot syndrome is one of the potential follow-up complications of this illness. A tingling feeling, numbness and temperature sensitivity in the feet mean that pressure points and injuries are no longer noticed. About one third of diabetes sufferers develop this type of nerve damage symptom, known as polyneuropathies. When pressure points turn into ulcers which become inflamed, specialists refer to this as diabetic foot syndrome. Blood circulation problems in the leg also impact detrimentally on the healing process. Wounds barely heal and there is a very high risk of recurrence. In the worst-case scenario, part of the foot has to be amputated. A lot of patience and specialist treatment is required for a foot in this condition to be able to heal. It is considerably less painful and less costly to prevent ulcers from forming in the first place than to try to treat them later or worse still have the foot amputated. Not every diabetes sufferer develops complications such as diabetic foot syndrome, but if you are a diabetic, it is advisable to be acutely aware of the problem. In this way it is possible to address most potentially negative knock-on effects of the illness. This is why specialists recommend observing and taking care of one s own body. It is important to verify your foot health regularly and wear appropriate, protective shoes. As medical studies show, unsuitable shoes can cause injury to feet and increase the risk of amputation in patients who lose the protective sense of pain. LucRo 6 In addition to daily monitoring of feet and shoes family members can help here a visit to an outpatient foot surgery should be a regular diary appointment. The following various diagnostic aids have proved useful as a supplement to visual inspection: The tuning fork + Checks the vibration sensitivity of peripheral nerves (one of the criteria for depth sensitivity) + Assesses cause of nerve failure

Our pressure measurement systems enable analysis of dynamic pressure distribution when standing, walking and running In addition to determining foot sensitivity, every shoe fitting should also include an analysis of pressure distribution when treating diabetic feet. Pressure peaks frequently promote the emergence of plantar foot wounds. Everything is done to spread the pressure evenly under the sole of the foot so as to reduce such pressure peaks. The sole of the foot can be analysed simply on a podoscope, e.g. our modern, digital foot scan system DigiPED. Electronic measurement optimises the quality of individual care: Shoes inserts are configured directly at the computer. Assessment of therapy progress is documented using a simple, reliable method.... and its diagnosis There are various systems available for dynamic measurement which reflect pressure distribution in the shoe between the sole of the foot and the insert. These precisely measure the pressure applied under the foot, thereby helping to easily identify any changes or malpositioning of the feet. Special Shoes for People with Diabetes LucRo The monofilament + Checks surface sensitivity + If no pressure is felt, touch sensitivity is already very limited and the natural protection function no longer active The TipTherm + Monitors the foot s temperature sensitivity + If temperature sensitivity fails, this is a key early symptom for an incipient polyneuropathy + If this failure is detected early on, crucial time is gained for prevention and therapy + Recommended as a standard form of cyclical monitoring 7

Two collections one common goal The feet of people suffering from diabetes require particular protection. The gradual loss of sensitivity puts the feet at constant risk. In particular, the form and function of normal shoes strain the foot, causing many foot injuries as a result. LucRo Special Shoes for People with Diabetes Yet it is in fact possible to avoid 80 per cent of the foot lesions which precede amputations in diabetes patients. Our shoe collections LucRo classic and kinetic provide lasting protection. LucRo kinetic is based on our clinically tested and wellproven LucRo classic line. With specific details altered, the LucRo kinetic collection supplements the LucRo classic collection so as to be able to cater to certain types of feet more selectively. About 7 to 8 million people suffered from diabetes in Germany in 2008 About 2.5 million diabetes sufferers have poor blood circulation in their legs In Germany there are currently some ten million people suffering from diabetes. Fortunately, only three per cent of them suffer from diabetic foot syndrome. But it is this minority which is in particularly urgent need of reliable foot protection. Our clinically tested LucRo classic has been established for ten years in the recurrence prevention of foot ulcerations. and the other 2.5 million? This is the number of diabetes sufferers who have poor blood circulation in their legs. If these people lead their lives vigilantly, they have better prospects of avoiding the potential knock-on effects of diabetes. Our two collections support this endeavour, acting as mobile companions from the very beginning. About 1 million diabetes sufferers are at an increased risk of contracting open foot wounds About 250,000 diabetes sufferers already have open foot injuries 8

Our goals + Avoid amputations + Fulfil the healthcare requirements of people suffering from diabetes + Enable comfortable mobility + Provide foot protection and maintain mobility + Enhance the joy of living + Sustainable mobility LucRo Special Shoes for People with Diabetes 9

No two feet are alike but protection is always the same Special Shoes for People with Diabetes Maximum comfort and clinically proven foot protection LucRo shoes all have one goal in common: to keep pressure off the foot. The feet are specifically protected from wounds, thereby reducing the risk of amputation. It gives you a good feeling to proactively keep your feet healthy. The varied LucRo Shoe Collection makes it easy for the patient to rethink. The shoes are outwardly virtually identical to regular shoes, with the therapeutic benefit packaged in a look which is perfectly suited to everyday use. Two shoe lines for stage-appropriate products for many different pathological feet. + For people with a peripheral nerve disorder + In the case of Hallux rigidus and rheumatic changes in the foot + Also for patients with neuropathies caused by other factors + LucRo kinetic extends the range of care options for pathological feet LucRo 10

Class medical product with mark Certified biocompatible LucRo inner lining Clinically tested Classic The LucRo classic provides virtually 90 per cent protection from relapse. The effectiveness of LucRo classic shoes was demonstrated in a 42-month clinical study. It was possible to reduce the rate of ulcer recurrence in high-risk diabetes sufferers by over 80 per cent in the first year of wearing the shoes. Kinetic Due to its structure and features, the kinetic shoes also offer ideal protection for slimmer feet. The LucRo kinetic line offers a different type of fit from that of the LucRo classic. In the heel we have given the form of the shoe last a narrower and slimmer hindfoot. This gives the shoe a different look and ensures optimised heel guidance especially for slimmer heels. Special Shoes for People with Diabetes Class medical product with mark Certified biocompatible LucRo inner lining Clinical study in progress LucRo 11

Anatomically shaped shoe last The last is crucial to ensuring our LucRo shoes provide maximum wear comfort and durability. Available in various shapes and sizes, it creates the comfortable, protective shape of the shoe. Pressure points are reduced by means of the shape from the very start of production. Stiffened, rigid outsole Stiffened in the forefoot, plantar pressure under the foot is reduced while walking and standing and is distributed evenly. The sole is suitable for orthopaedic fittings. LucRo kineticbags for a pleasant and comfortable feel when walking. They are located below the centre of the heel and under the ball of the big toe in the hardened outsole. They relieve the joints by absorbing strain energy. LucRo Special Shoes for People with Diabetes LucRo reduces pressure Features of LucRo classic and LucRo kinetic Soft upper materials We use select, high-quality calfskin nappa, deerskin and nubuck leather. All leathers are of exceptional, certified quality. Extended rear cap and optimum heel arch This fitting ensures the heel sits firmly in the shoe and has stable guidance. 12

Insole with shock absorption The shock-absorbing, removable insole (total thickness: 6 or 9 mm) is made up of three sections. Made of special flexible foam, it provides varying rigidity in the forefoot and rear foot. In this way it supports or relieves the foot at the required points. LucRo classic The insole has a total thickness of 9 mm. Pressure-reducing, soft padding A special foam ensures extremely soft padding of the entire shaft. This reduces the risk of pressure points forming around the entire foot. Seamless textile lining Made of an integrated textile microfibre, the lining also remains breathable and skin-friendly. We do not use front caps, so as to protect the particularly sensitive forefoot. Since the sensitive forefoot area is always seamless, even the smallest of pressure points is effectively avoided. LucRo kinetic The insole has a total thickness of 6 mm. Certified biocompatible LucRo inner lining M +10 LucRo Special Shoes for People with Diabetes Wide shaft opening No pressure is to be applied to the foot even when the shoe is slipped on. With the wide shaft opening you step simply, quickly and safely into the LucRo shoe. Low-impact sole and heel roll The supporting sole and heel roll ensures a controlled rolling motion and a secure gait. Four different sizes A large selection of care options is provided by the various sizes: S, M, W and +10. The shaft extension in particular (+10 mm) allows diabetes-adapted footbeds to be incorporated into selected models. 13

LucRo an experienced and reliable companion The clinical study Prospective cohort study based on patient data from a surgery specialising in diabetes, June 1999 to December Carried out by Klaus Busch, c/o Prof. Dr. med. E. Chantelau, Diabetes Foot Outpatient Surgery, MNR-Klinik, Heinrich- Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. 80 per cent was reduction achieved in the rate of ulcer recurrence in the first year among high-risk diabetes sufferers with a polyneuropathy and/or a peripheral arterial occlusion disorder. Although LucRo kinetic is based on the clinically proven properties of LucRo classic, the kinetic shoe is currently being subjected to scientific testing in a separate study. 16 Quality for every situation Mobility should not be constrained by limitations. Whether it s sunny, raining, or snowing our LucRo shoes provide protection for every situation. Our Sympatex boots keep your feet dry and warm on especially wet days. For the time spent at home, our new slipper models provide comfort and a sense of well-being. Special Shoes for People with Diabetes LucRo Environmentally compatible leather purely vegetal-tanned Our company has been committed to sustainable, environment-friendly production for years. Only purely vegetal-tanned leathers are used for certain models. What is so special about these? The tanning process is carried out using natural agents only, dispensing with all artificial, synthetic supplements. Extracts from wood types such as oak and chestnut or even rhubarb can occur in the tanning agents. SKIN-FRIENDLY LEATHERS VEGETAL TANNING Tanning agents are essential for making animal skin durable. Generally speaking, chemically produced tanning agents are used to meet modern needs. Vegetal tanning only uses plant-based and natural extracts. This process is one of the healthiest. Leather tanned in this way also protects the skin flora due to its natural properties. The residue is easy to recycle and is put to further use as agricultural fertiliser for a clean and safe environment. 16

Seeing the big picture for the sake of healthy feet LucRo shoes are proven to hinder the recurrence of foot wounds with their protective function. The LucRo shoe is a very important element of foot therapy. Other factors also influence the occurrence of foot wounds. Diabetes sufferers have to pay very close attention to their feet for the whole of their lives. This includes daily foot inspection, regular professional foot care and wearing special socks and also shoe care. LucRo Special Shoes for People with Diabetes You will find LucRo socks and LucRo care products on pages 62 and 63 of this catalogue Only a fully functional shoe can provide optimum protection No item of clothing is subject to as much strain as a favourite pair of shoes. So with a little care and gentle handling, you can further extend the lifetime of your shoes as well as the pleasure of wearing them. The following tips are intended to help you derive pleasure from our LucRo shoes for a long time to come. Allow the shoe to rest Feet sweat every day and the material absorbs this fluid. The strain on the shoe is increased when you walk. So if possible, change your shoes after wearing them once and let them rest for 24 hours! This will increase their lifetime significantly. Regularly replace footbeds Footbeds adapt perfectly to the foot. However, due to the high level of pressure applied, they no longer offer a secure hold after a while and cease to provide sufficient support. We therefore recommend replacing footbeds on a regular basis. Shoes don t like heat Wet or moist shoes should never be placed near a powerful source of heat such as a radiator. Give the shoes time to dry slowly at room temperature. In order to prevent them from drying out, it is important to ensure the leather is regularly provided with nutrients. High-quality shoe polish or a nubuk pen should be used for this purpose. Leather is a natural product Can you see individual scratches or scarred insect bites on the leather? Don t worry these are clear evidence of its natural origins and are not the result of processing errors. Impregnation provides protection Spray the upper material of your shoes with moisture protection before you wear them for the first time. This ensures they are protected from the wet. Repeat this procedure at regular intervals. 18

Material composition: 80 % cotton 16 % polyamide 4 % spandex Outside in cotton thread Inside in cotton with silver component The clothes hanger for shoes To ensure LucRo shoes keep their shape over a long period, you should always use a shoe tree after wearing them. The shoe tree takes best effect when the leather is still supple and warm from being worn. A shoe horn enhances heel stability Using a shoe horn protects the extended rear cap. It is especially important for the heel to sit firmly and sturdily in the shoe. The shape of the shoe will suffer in the long run if you do not use a shoe horn. Regular brushing is important Apply regular care to the leather so as to maintain its high quality. There are various brush thicknesses and polishes to suit each type of leather. LucRo socks provide additional help The special LucRo socks possess all the qualities required to protect feet. Unlike regular socks, the special LucRo socks are padded across the entire sole area. Pressure points cannot form in the toe area because the socks are handlinked. The loosely knitted, rubberless soft cuff avoids constriction of the leg but prevents the socks from slipping down. The material blend of 80 per cent cotton, 16 per cent polyamide and just 4 per cent spandex ensures a high level of skin tolerance. The elastic fibres provide an excellent fit and crease-free fabric. A particular feature of LucRo socks is their antibacterial effect, achieved by socalled silver fibres in the cotton. Structure of fabric containing silver fibres The protective qualities of silver + Antibacterial + Anti-infectious + Odour-preventive + Washable + Antifungal + Natural LucRo Special Shoes for People with Diabetes Produced from the renewable raw material cellulose, the fibre is blended with the combed cotton, spun and dyed. The result is a purely natural product without synthetic fibres. All these properties together contribute to the reduction of injury risk and make LucRo socks an effective therapy supplement. 19
