1 Name: Material Needed: Graph Paper or Electronic Application Project Title: Introduction Background Information Hemoglobin i a molecule within the red blood cell that tranport oxygen. In a normal human, 97% of the body hemoglobin i type A. One ubgroup of thi type A hemoglobin i hemoglobin A1C, which i hemoglobin that ha attached glucoe molecule from glucoe that i circulating in the blood tream. More glucoe preent in the blood tream, a with diabetic patient like fictional patient Rebecca Green, will reult in a higher number of glucoe molecule attached to the hemoglobin molecule. Once hemoglobin i glycated (hemoglobin with attached glucoe), it remain in that tate throughout it life pan. Becaue red blood cell, which contain hemoglobin, have a life pan of day, the meaurement of A1C i an indication of how well a diabetic treatment plan i working over a 60- to 90-day period. (Remember that the reult will repreent a certain percentage of red blood cell at the beginning of their life pan and another percentage at the end of their life pan. The AIC tet reult report the percentage of the mid-range.) The recommended goal for a diabetic patient whoe treatment plan i working well i an A1C reult of le than 7.0%, the percentage of glycated hemoglobin in relation to the total hemoglobin. You will have an opportunity to analyze tet reult for Rebecca Green, the fictional patient.

3 Page 3 Blood Calculation Part 1: Rebecca ha had her A1C level meaured ix time ince he wa diagnoed with Type 2 diabete. Ue the following formula to calculate what her average blood ugar level ha been in the time leading up to each of her A1C tet 1/15, 1/30, 2/15, 4/15, 6/15 and 7/15: Blood Glucoe = (A1C 35.6) 77.3 Remember to ue lab reult for the A1C value. Look for thoe reult near the bottom of each lab report. Part 2: On her July 15 viit, Rebecca health care team ha aked her to check her own blood ugar four time a day for the next 30 day uing a home teting meter and to record the reult in her diary. The reult of her diary are lited on the following page. Create a hitogram of the reult to oberve trend in Rebecca blood ugar.

Uing the reult from Rebecca home diary, find the mean of all the value. Ue the calculated mean value for her blood ugar to calculate an expected percentage for her next A1C. Analyze the difference between what you calculated and what you predicted from the hitogram.
