Living with DIABETES
Mark Your Calendar Regular tests and screenings can ensure you re on the right track with your Diabetes. You should complete the following screenings at least once or twice a year: Hemoglobin A-1-C Lab Test (Often called the HbA1c or A1c test) Have this blood test at least twice a year. It will show your average blood sugar level for the past 2-3 months. Blood Lipid (Fats) Lab Tests Get a blood test at least once a year: ¾ Cholesterol aim for less than 200. ¾ LDL aim for less than 100. ¾ HDL men should aim for more than 35; women should aim for more than 45. ¾ Triglycerides aim for less than 200. These test results will help you plan now to prevent a heart attack and stroke. Kidney Lab Tests Ask for tests at least once a year to check your urine for protein and your blood for protein breakdown. The results will tell you how well your kidneys are working. Dilated Eye Exam See your eye doctor once a year. A doctor can detect eye problems before you notice anything wrong. Dental Exam See your dentist twice a year for a cleaning and checkup to avoid gum disease and other mouth problems. Flu Shot Get a flu shot each year. The flu can be very serious for someone with diabetes.
Many people with diabetes live long and healthy lives by taking the right steps. This starts with basic knowledge of the condition. Diabetes is a disease that affects the way our bodies convert food into energy. Most of the food we digest turns into glucose (sugar), which passes into the bloodstream. The body relies on a hormone produced by the pancreas (insulin) to move glucose from the bloodstream to the cells. This is what fuels the body and gives us energy. In people with diabetes: ¾ The pancreas may not make enough insulin, and/or ¾ The body does not use insulin the right way. Too much sugar in the blood can damage the body. Problems from diabetes include: ¾ Heart disease ¾ Blindness ¾ Kidney failure ¾ Nerve damage that can sometimes lead to amputations of toes, feet or legs.
Subtle Symptoms Diabetes symptoms are not always easy to spot. While they are the same for both type 1 and 2, symptoms usually develop quickly for type 1 diabetes. For type 2 diabetes, they may develop slowly or never show at all. Symptoms include: ¾ Feeling very thirsty ¾ Feeling very hungry ¾ Losing weight without trying ¾ Frequent urination ¾ Blurry eyesight ¾ Fruity or acidic smelling breath Treating and Managing Diabetes People with type 1 diabetes can control their condition by taking insulin, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Some people with type 2 diabetes can manage their diabetes with healthy eating and exercise. A doctor may need to prescribe medicines and/or insulin to help meet target blood glucose levels. You can quickly find out how your blood sugar changes after eating certain kinds of food or doing physical activity. Diabetics who must treat their disease with insulin often use these measures to decide how much insulin to take.
Know Your Numbers Blood sugar levels go up and down all day long in people with diabetes. Testing blood sugar levels and keeping track of the numbers is key to managing diabetes. This includes: ¾ Following your doctor s directions on when and how often you should test your blood. ¾ Pricking your finger with a small sterile needle for a tiny amount of blood. ¾ Using test strips and a meter to measure your blood sugar level. ¾ Recording these levels to discuss with your doctor. Maintain a Healthy Blood Pressure High blood pressure or hypertension is common in people with diabetes. It can increase the risk of diabetes complications like diabetic eye and kidney problems. Most people with diabetes should have a reading of no more than 140/90. The top number measures pressure in vessels as your heart beats. The bottom number measures pressure when vessels relax between beats. Normal blood pressure is as important in managing diabetes as good control of your blood sugar when it comes to preventing diabetes complications. Your doctor will work with you to make sure your blood pressure is controlled at every visit.
Working Towards a Healthy Weight Most people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Extra weight makes it harder for cells to respond to insulin. This causes high blood glucose. Often, people with type 2 diabetes are able to lower their blood glucose by losing weight and increasing physical activity. Type 1 diabetics must always take insulin. For type 2 diabetics, losing weight and eating healthy may help cut down on the insulin or need for other medicines.
Many people with diabetes fear that they can never enjoy their favorite foods again. This is not true. Diabetics should: ¾ Eat a wide variety of foods. ¾ Eat smaller portions. ¾ Learn what a serving size is for different foods. ¾ Balance eating with physical activity, as approved by your doctor. People with diabetes should exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week and talk to their doctor about a safe exercise plan. Simple Steps To Healthier Living Diabetes is a common disease, yet every diabetic needs unique care. Work with your doctor to create a plan of care specific to your situation. You can also start some everyday habits to prevent complications and stay in charge of your health: ¾ Follow the healthy eating plan that you and your doctor or dietitian have worked out. ¾ Eat your meals and snacks at around the same times each day. ¾ Take your diabetes medicine at the same times each day. ¾ Check and record your blood sugar. If you have 2 or more readings higher or lower than your normal readings, call your doctor. ¾ Check your feet every day for cuts, blisters, sores and swelling. ¾ Brush and floss your teeth. ¾ Don t smoke.
