1 Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) Reconciliation Report Based on responses from pre and post-tests completed by approximately 200 Medicare beneficiaries that attended a Stanford or Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) workshop from April 2014 through April 2016 This data was not statistically tested. 2 Average Days in a Week PAS Response Analysis 7.00 Participant Behavior In the last week, how many days did you eat five or more servings of fruits or vegetables? In the last week, how many days did you exercise for at least 30 minutes? In the last week, how many days did you test your blood sugar? Outcome Questions In the last week, how many days did you take your diabetes medication as ordered by your doctor? In the last week, how many days did you check your feet? The questions measured the effect of the DSME classes on the behavior of the participants. Participants showed improvement almost all behaviors tracked. For example, before the class these participants exercised 30 mins an average of 3 days a week, this improved to 4 days a week. Similarly, patients ate more fruits and vegetables. They also showed a slight improvement in adhering to their medication regimen which was very good to begin with.

Knowledge Questions Carbohydrates (starches and sweets) break down in your body to what? These questions tested the participant s knowledge concerning diabetes and its prevention. The participants showed a marked improvement in these areas after the class. The participants showed a firmer grasp of how good behavior can impact blood sugar levels.

These questions were designed to monitor how confident the participants felt in handling and managing diabetes. Again, participants showed improvement in all categories. They were more confident that they can manage their blood sugar effectively, felt empowered to ask more questions and consequently were less nervous about their condition.
