University of Baghdad-College of Nursing Adult Nursing Department 1 st Semester Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Systems Common Disorders of Liver, Gallbladder & Pancreas Dr.SadeqAL-Fayyadh
My Journey: Who Am I? October /1st/2000 was the first day of my journey in nursing. Four years later I graduated from the College of Nursing /University of Baghdad with honor roll Bachelor degree in nursing science. One year later I finished my clinical rotation at Medical City/Nursing Home Post neurosurgical ICU. After that, my CoN/UoB brought me back to be a clinical Adults Nursing Department. November/1st /2007 was my first day at graduate level. Two years later I graduated from CoN/UoB with a Master degree in Adult nursing. I have taught several undergraduate courses, focused mainly on Neuroscience & Neurosurgical nursing specialty. I spent the past four years in the USA to get the terminal degree in Nursing. I got it from the Oklahoma City University/Kramer School of Nursing. Reading is my favorite hobby. I have three flowers in my life! Finally, my favorite quote is: What has he found who has lost God? And what has he lost who has found God?
Here is my course work schedule: Sunday: Clinical Training-BTH Monday: Clinical Training-BTH Tuesday: Office hours & research focus Wednesday: Quality Assurance committee focus Thursday: Day off Friday: Day off Saturday: Health Assessment-CON Come over & let us learn together! Here is my contact info:
My Instructional philosophy
Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Systems So, what do you all think about the term?
Learning Outcome Conduct data collection when caring for a patient with common disorders of the liver, gallbladder, & pancreas. Identify tests/procedures, which are used to diagnose common disorders of the liver, gallbladder, & pancreas. Plan nursing care for patients with common liver, gallbladder, & pancreas disorders. Describe therapeutic measures that are used for patients with common disorders of the liver, gallbladder, & pancreas.
Covered Topics: Nursing care for patient with the following Hepato-biliary-pancreatic disorders: Part1: Patients with Hepatic Disorders Hepatitis Liver Cirrhosis Part2: Patients with Pancreatic Disorders Pancreatitis Cancer of the Pancreas Part3: Patients with Gallbladder Disorders Cholecystitis Cholelithiasis
The Liver: An Introductory Framework Body s Refinery Over 400 Its principal role is functions!
Liver, Gallbladder, & Pancreas Anatomical Presentation
Liver is the largest organ in the human body. It weighs ~ 3 lb. It has 2 main lobes, located just under the diaphragm on the right side of the body. It can lose 75 % of its tissue (to disease or surgery) without ceasing to function.
Functions of the Liver Metabolizes CHO, Amino Acid, lipid Synthesizes plasma proteins Stores vitamins & minerals Forms blood clotting factors Detoxifies drugs & toxins Produces & excretes bile Regulates hormone function Phagocytic activities by Kupffer Cells Acts as reservoir for blood volume Activation of Vitamin D
To Summarize! The liver: Changes food into energy! That's why Pts with liver disorders have>>>> Has a principle role in clotting function>>> Form & secret bile>>> Has a principle role in drugs, alcohol & toxins metabolism>>> & much more vital functions!
Part1: Patients with Hepatic Disorders Hepatitis Liver Cirrhosis Hepatitis Inflammation of the hepatocytes Hepa means liver, itis means inflammation
Quiz! Many patients with HCV infection remain clinically undiagnosed for a long time. *Due to a lack of liver-specific symptoms
Liver Cirrhosis is a chronic, progressive disease that causes extensive degeneration & destruction of parenchymal liver cells. Gender It s twice as common in men as in women Incidence Age group Most patients are between ages 40 & 60 years old
Part2: Patients with Pancreatic Disorders Pancreatitis Cancer of the Pancreas
Pancreatitis An inflammation of the pancreas Chronic pancreatitis An ongoing pancreatic cellular damage & decreased pancreatic enzyme functioning often following repeated occasions of acute pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis An inflammation of the pancreas be caused by a process called autodigestion. In which release of digestive enzymes into the gland
Cancer of the Pancreas Primary Metastasize The cancerous cells are originally aroused from the pancreatic cells themselves The pancreas can also be the site of metastasis from other tumors The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is Poor Survival time is often 4 to 6 months!
Part3: Patients with Gallbladder Disorders Cholecystitis Cholelithiasis
The Biliary Tract Gallbladder Cystic duct Hepatic Duct Common bile duct
Disorders of the Gallbladder Cholelithiasis Cholesterol & bile stone formation Cholecystitis Inflammation &/or obstruction Stones Bacterial
