SECTION 3: WHAT DOES DIABETES UK DO? By volunteering with us you re helping Diabetes UK tackle the diabetes crisis. This section will explain what we are doing to achieve this, the role volunteers play in it, and most importantly how we help people affected by diabetes and those at risk of Type 2 diabetes. At the end of this section you will be able to: explain Diabetes UK s vision and strategy understand how volunteers fit in to this describe some of the main areas of work and support provided by Diabetes UK. 22
Our vision A WORLD WHERE DIABETES CAN DO NO HARM Our vision is A WORLD WHERE DIABETES CAN DO NO HARM: where fewer people get diabetes; where those with diabetes live well; and where ultimately a cure is found. Everything we do should support this vision. There are currently 4.5 million people in the UK living with diabetes, and 11.9 million more at increased risk of getting Type 2 diabetes. Those diagnosed face the risk of life-changing and life-limiting complications unless they are given the very best care and the support they need to manage their condition well. As the UK s leading diabetes charity, we bring people together to work in partnership, we support those living with diabetes, prevent Type 2 diabetes, make research breakthroughs, and will ultimately find a cure. By volunteering you re now an important part of Diabetes UK. 23
Our strategy We have an ambitious strategy to make sure we are making a big difference and to meet the needs of the increasing number of people affected by diabetes. Our strategy sets out the six changes that need to happen to meet our vision and tackle the diabetes crisis. You can find out more about our strategy and what we are going to do to make these changes on the website or by asking your volunteer manager. GREATER INVESTMENT IN DIABETES RESEARCH A TRANSFORMATION IN DIABETES CARE REDUCING OBESITY AND PREVENTING TYPE 2 DIABETES HOW WE TACKLE THE DIABETES CRISIS HELPING EVERYONE TO MANAGE THEIR DIABETES A REVOLUTION IN UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORT THE BEST PEOPLE AND THE BEST ORGANISATION 24
Our values Diabetes UK s values show how we work and why. WE RE DRIVEN TO KNOW MORE We are a trusted source of knowledge. But we re restless to know more. So we listen, ask questions and exchange views, information and opinions with every part of the diabetes community. Because our combined knowledge has the power to transform lives. WE MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN We know the harm diabetes can do. So we fight it every day. We make our voices heard, push for change, try new things. And if we fail, we learn, pick ourselves up and go again. Together we do whatever it takes to fight diabetes. WE PUT PEOPLE FIRST Diabetes affects people in many different ways. So we give people time. Listening to what they have to say and embracing their worries and concerns. Creating a powerful network of care and support. WE KEEP THINGS SIMPLE Diabetes is complicated enough. So we re clear and concise, helping people to easily access the information that s relevant to them. Using everyday language, we speak simple truths that people need to hear. 25
How we help Below is a list of the ways we support people affected by diabetes or at risk of Type 2 diabetes. All of them involve the work of volunteers. The next few pages cover some of the ways we help in more detail and the roles of volunteers. Care and support We provide information, advice and support to help people manage their diabetes effectively and confidently. Our research We are the UK s largest charitable funder of diabetes research, funding pioneering research into care, cure and prevention for all types of diabetes. Our campaigns We make change happen by campaigning with people affected by diabetes. We improve the quality of care across the UK s health services, so that everyone gets access to the best treatment and standards of care. Prevention We work to halt the rising number of people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes by educating them about their risk, encouraging early diagnosis and promoting simple lifestyle changes to help prevent or delay it. Communities We are committed to talking about diabetes to people from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups. Healthcare professionals Together with our network of over 10,000 professional members and diabetes specialists, we share knowledge to improve the lives of people with diabetes. One of the things I m proud of is organising exercise classes for older people. To begin with the local group funded the classes ourselves but they were really popular and we were able to persuade our local NHS to take over the funding and running of the classes. I volunteer because it s good fun and rewarding, and it keeps me active and occupied in my retirement. Aileen, who realised she wasn t the only one with diabetes after she started volunteering. 26
CARE AND SUPPORT All the care and support Diabetes UK provides would not be possible without the work of volunteers. Helpline The Diabetes UK Helpline is for all people with diabetes, their family or friends, and people who are worried they might be at risk. People can get in touch for answers, support or just to talk to someone who knows diabetes. We make people aware of their rights and can help deal with problems like work or driving. Care in School Helpline The Care in School Helpline supports parents in getting the care their child needs in school and is partly staffed by specially trained volunteers. Local Groups and Community Groups Local diabetes support groups offer a chance to share experiences, while providing essential guidance and information on diabetes. Our local groups include adult and family support groups and they are all run entirely by local volunteers. Every year they also raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for Diabetes UK. Peer Support Trained volunteers who are affected by diabetes offer high quality, local support to help people better manage their condition. Type 1 Events Diabetes UK Type 1 events are a chance for children, teens, adults and families affected by Type 1 diabetes to meet others, share similar experiences and learn from each other. They are supported by our team of volunteers, who are either healthcare professionals or have personal experiences of living with diabetes. Online We provide a wealth of support online whether it is on our Facebook and Twitter pages or our Diabetes UK Support Forum, where people are on hand to answer any questions, share experiences and guide people to the best place for more help. Type 2 Diabetes and Me is a step-by-step online guide to understanding the condition while #Type1Uncut are videos made by young people with Type1 for young people with Type 1. I get particular satisfaction from supporting people to learn more about diabetes and how to care for themselves. Some of the money that I raised from my expedition to Everest was used to fund a place for a young person on a Type 1 Event so that they would have a chance to meet other young people with diabetes, to share and learn in a fun environment. Surjeet, mountain man, fundraiser and chair of the Luton Diabetes UK group. 27
OUR RESEARCH We are the UK s leading charitable funder of diabetes research. In 2015 we invested over 6.8 million in research and funded 33 new studies. As part of our new strategy we plan to increase our investment in world-class research. Everything we know about caring for diabetes is a result of research, and many Diabetes UK scientists have already contributed to life-changing breakthroughs. We funded trials of the first ever insulin pen, were behind the launch of islet transplants on the NHS, and invested in a new eye screening approach that now saves the sight of hundreds of people every year. We re funding research to improve care for diabetes today, while moving towards the prevention of all forms of diabetes, and ultimately a cure, in the future. Volunteers help by raising awareness of Diabetes UK research, adopting research projects, or joining our funding panels to help us decide what pioneering research we should fund next.
OUR CAMPAIGNS We influence governments, opinion formers, healthcare professionals and health services to make sure that people with diabetes get the standards of care they deserve, locally and nationally. Diabetes Voices are volunteers who are dedicated to campaigning with us. They might raise awareness, explain the need for change or even meet government ministers to win policy changes. Below is an introduction to our different campaigns. The 4 Ts campaign The 4Ts are Toilet, Thirsty, Tired and Thinner. Volunteers help the campaign by raising awareness of the four main symptoms of Type 1 diabetes to make sure more children are diagnosed early. Taking Control Most people with diabetes must manage their condition themselves for 8,757 hours a year. Taking Control exists to make sure that everyone has the skills and knowledge they need to do this confidently. Type 1 essentials for children and young people We re making parents, children, teenagers, healthcare professionals, parliamentarians and the NHS aware of the support that all children and young people who have Type 1 diabetes should be receiving. Putting Feet First Volunteers help the Putting Feet First campaign by raising awareness of foot problems and calling on the NHS and government to do more to reduce the amount of amputations. YOUR CARE PLAN Type 1 diabetes: Make the grade The several different roles volunteers play in Make the grade helps make sure all children with Type 1 diabetes get the support and care they deserve at school so that they have the same opportunities as other children. 15 Healthcare Essentials The 15 Healthcare Essentials are the 15 basic health checks and services that everyone with diabetes should receive from their healthcare team. 29

PREVENTION There are 11.9 million people at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. We are working to prevent them getting the condition. We raise awareness of the risk factors and help people maintain a healthy weight, eat well and be active. Volunteers play a significant role in helping us do that. Know Your Risk Online Tool The Know Your Risk Online Tool on our website uses straightforward questions to help you find out your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes and raise awareness of the risk factors. NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme We are working with NHS England and Public Health England on the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme in England. This project identifies those at risk of Type 2 diabetes and supports them in changing their lifestyle through NHS courses that help people get active or eat better. 31
COMMUNITIES People of South Asian descent or with African or African-Caribbean heritage are more likely to get Type 2 diabetes than in the White European population. To make sure we communicate effectively with people from these diverse groups, we have created a special team of volunteers called Diabetes Community Champions. They organise talks and risk assessment sessions in local settings and signpost people to their local diabetes healthcare services. Listening is important to Diabetes UK as it helps us know what people with diabetes need. Keeping in constant contact with these different groups means we can be there for them and offer any support they might need.
HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS At Diabetes UK we help healthcare professionals and the NHS improve services and standards of care so people with diabetes get the treatment they deserve. Our professional membership of more than 10,000 is made up of a wide variety of clinicians including consultants, nurses, GPs and podiatrists. We also run groups that allow professionals to get information and updates tailored to their specific profession. These include groups on footcare, primary care, diabetes nursing and one for NHS commissioners. Each year we host our annual Diabetes Professional Conference which brings together clinicians who care for people with diabetes to swap ideas and share information. 33
