1 Managing your diabetes in Laurence Jackson School If you have been newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes or if you are new to our school then this leaflet is for you! You are not alone!
2 Hello! She is very nice, friendly and reassuring Medical room This leaflet has been produced b y us - a group of y oung people with Typ e1 diabetes attend ing Laurence Jacks on School. Map of the school This shows a highlighted route from the main student entrance to the medical room. It also shows the entrance to the dinner hall. We thought you would find this useful; there are lots of people around to ask for directions too ROUTE TO MEDICAL ROOM DINNER HALL ENTRANCE Mrs Colman is th e fi aid coordinator, rst she is based in the me d room. She will ke ical ep your equipment and h ypo supplies safe an d support you whe never you need her. This is a private room available so you can test your blood glucose and do your insulin injections. You go here for support when you are having a hypo or hyper. 3 Medical pass This allows you to go to the medical room or toilet at any time! Just show your pass to the teacher. It also lets you skip to the front of the lunch line Whilst in school Lunch time You CAN still eat your lunch with your friends! You need to check your blood glucose levels before lunch. Some people give their insulin before lunch but if you have school dinners and carb count you can check your levels before lunch and give your insulin after you have eaten. Hospital appointments If you have a hospital appointment in school time just go to main office and sign out. P.E. You may need a snack before P.E. or to check your blood glucose levels. If you choose to check your blood glucose regularly before P.E. you must have a blood ketone meter in school ask Kelly or Alison your diabetes nurses about this Hypo-box Your emergency supplies to be used in the event of a hypo. Make sure your hypo-box is ALWAYS full Medical kit Ideas for your hypo-box You will also have a diabetes school care plan in the medical room. Kelly and Alison will send a copy to school and one to you and your parents. This helps school staff support us in the management of our diabetes when needed. It contains information on hypos, hypers, illness, exams, school trips etc page 4 page 5
4 We can help... Ok then... can I go on school trips? Yes, no problem just be prepared and make sure that all the staff on the trip know you have diabetes. What if I have a problem in school? There are lots of people to help, Mrs Colman, Kelly and Alison, your diabetes nurses, your head of year and your parents everyone can work together to help you. So... can I meet other people in school who have diabetes too???? Yes of course, we would be happy to meet you, we can just say Hi, or have a chat or show you around school Ask Kelly, Alison or Mrs Colman. What about my attendance rate if I m always at hospital appointments? Your hospital appointments are really important and they will be marked as an authorised absence which is ok.
