Hartley NEEDS This activity was planned to update clinicians and other healthcare professionals on the current state and recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, one of the most common chronic neurologic conditions. Discussions of advances in the treatment of epilepsy will include evidence-based reviews of anticonvulsants. Participants will also learn about novel neuromodulatory therapies that are available and of others under study for the treatment of refractory epilepsy. Epilepsy in special populations, including the returning veteran and the school-aged child, ethical issues in caring for the patient with epilepsy, and the physician's role in serving as an advocate for epilepsy patients will also be addressed. TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is intended for neurologists, internists, family physicians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals who manage epilepsy patients in outpatient settings. OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the activity, the participant should be able to describe and discuss: the range of services available to healthcare professionals who care for epilepsy patients ongoing basic and translational research likely to impact clinical practice what s new in pediatric and adult anticonvulsant strategies available implantable stimulation strategies and the importance of rapid referral of medically refractory patients epilepsy in special populations, including the returning veteran and the school-aged child ethical issues in caring for the patient with epilepsy and the physician s role in serving as an advocate for epilepsy patients. 6 CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY Requests for registration refunds must be in writing and received by the Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) at least 10 business days before the activity begins. The date the request is received by the OCME will be considered the cancellation date. Requests received after the refund deadline will not be processed. Cancellations are subject to a $50 administrative fee deducted from the registration fee paid to cover guarantees and other expenses.
