The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December Approval date February 2017 Strategic purpose statement The purpose of this qualification is to provide the fitness sector with individuals who have the competencies required for entrylevel employment as a group fitness instructor able to deliver classes to achieve individual and collective fitness goals, using either a pre-choreographed programme or a freestyle selfchoreographed programme. Graduates of this qualification may be able to apply for full registration on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) under the scope of Group Exercise. Graduate profile Graduates of this qualification will be able to: instruct exercise to music classes safely and effectively with an underlying knowledge base of basic gross anatomical structures and exercise physiology (10 credits) manage personal fitness levels to meet role requirements and role model exercise techniques (5 credits) specialise in delivering a specific group fitness class type (10 credits) monitor conditions to maintain Health and Safety processes and protect exercise clients from undue risk in accordance with facility policy and procedures (10 credits) manage a class of individuals by responding to the differing motivational needs of exercise participants (10 credits). Strands: Graduates of the Pre-choreographed Strand will also be able to role model a pre-choreographed routine to a set prechoreographed programme (10 credits). Graduates of the Freestyle Strand will also be able to design, instruct, and evaluate a basic freestyle group fitness class plan (10 credits). Qualification Reference 1857 Page 1 of 5

2 Education pathway Employment pathway This certificate builds on the National Certificate in Fitness (Foundation Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1239] and can lead to the National Diploma in Fitness (Applied) (Level 5) [Ref: 1240]. Holders of this certificate will be qualified to work as employed or independent pre-choreographed or freestyle group fitness instructors in fitness enterprises and/or community facilities. Graduates may go on to manage groups of fitness instructors or to work independently depending on their experience. Qualification specifications Qualification award Evidence requirements for assuring consistency Minimum standard of achievement and standards for grade endorsements This qualification may be awarded by Skills Active Aotearoa and accredited organisations arranging training leading to the qualification under section 5 of the Industry Training Act The formal document certifying the award of this qualification bears the NZQF logo, which indicates the qualification is a quality assured New Zealand qualification. It will also include the name and logo of Skills Active Aotearoa and the accredited organisation. All Tertiary Education Organisations (TEOs) either arranging or delivering programmes that lead to the award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process scheduled by NZQA. Further information can be found on the NZQA website. All TEOs will be required to provide evidence during the consistency process to demonstrate how graduates have met the graduate profile. Critical evidence relevant to this qualification will include the following: industry feedback; self-evaluation (e.g. programme evaluation reports, moderation outcomes); graduate feedback; graduate progression/destination information; relevant learning experience undertaken in an industry workplace/environment; portfolio of relevant experience including learner selfevaluation (where appropriate); any other relevant evidence as appropriate. 3 Other requirements for the qualification (including regulatory body or legislative requirements) The TEO must ensure that candidates pre-screen clients looking for contraindications as this is a health and safety requirement. Assessment for this outcome must take place in a workplace setting. Transition information Replacement information This qualification was replaced by: New Zealand Certificate in Pre-choreographed Group Exercise (Level 3) [Ref: 3582] New Zealand Certificate in Freestyle Group Exercise (Level 4) [Ref: 3565]. The last date for entry into programmes leading to these qualifications is 31 December The last date for assessment to take place for the replaced qualifications is 31 December People currently working towards the replaced qualifications may complete its requirements by the date specified above or transfer to a programme of study or training leading to a replacement qualification. It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
