1 Session Three The aim of this session is to discuss the psychological, social, nutrition and hydration considerations of exercise participation for older people in all environments At the end of this session you will be able :- To develop and apply strategies to motivate older adults To develop and apply strategies to encourage adherence to an exercise programme How to create a fun and enjoyable session for participants in an exercise setting 1

2 By the end of this session you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: The psychological and social barriers specific to older adults The importance of building rapport with older adult clients The importance of social interaction in exercise programming The increased responsibility and duty of care while working with vulnerable clients. By the end of this session you will be able to: Understand the impact that nutrition can have on exercise capacity and safety Know the common nutrition deficiencies associated with this age group Communicate the importance of adequate hydration within exercise sessions Glossary of terms Psychological (mental) aspects Social aspects Adherence Motivation Exercise enhancers Self-efficacy Nutrition/hydration 2

3 Successful Ageing Is: Low risk of disease and disease-related disability High mental and physical function Active engagement with life American Journal of Health promotion Successful Ageing is largely determined by individual lifestyle choices in:- Self-efficacy Diet Exercise Pursuit of mental challenges Involvement with other people Social Connectedness: Isolation (actual or perceived) is a powerful risk factor for poor health The more older people participate in social relationships, the better their overall health 3

4 About Mental Health: Mental health is something we all have. It can be good, at times it can be bad. We should try to look after it in the same way we look after our physical health. Maintaining high mental function means:- Regular physical activity Strong social support system Education and lifelong learning Belief in one s ability to handle what life has to offer Self- Efficacy Health is : A state of complete Physical, Mental and Social Well-Being, and not merely the absence of Disease and Infirmity World Health Organisation 4

5 Task A HEPA session is three dimensional. If you were to score yourself from 1-10 (10 being the highest), where would you come in the three categories? Physical Mental Social Health is Wealth Taking moments to enjoy life can help you make positive health decisions IDEA Fitness Journal In promoting health the key challenges are:- Overcoming barriers to participation e.g. social isolation, mental ill-health, chronic disease. Ensuring that the increase in length of life is matched by increased years of health Recognising the value and the potential contribution older people can make to society. 5

6 is the key to increased participation. It is moving from:- Reliance > Self responsibility Dependence > Independence Reactionary Response > Proactive Approach Health as a negative state> Positive State What s wrong > What s right Six dimensions of wellness:- Physical = Functional Fitness Social = New Friendships Mental = New Challenges Spiritual = Mind, Body & Spirit Occupational = Interests, Hobbies Emotional = Laughter, Joy, Optimism is relative: Age, chronic illness, terminal illness, physical or mental disability need NOT limit the level of wellness one can reach; the level of wellness is always relative to one s own potential. 6

8 Answer C) Exemptions for older people with chronic disease. Adherence Adoption of and adherence to regular physical activity is a multi-faceted problem at every age. The importance of physical activity to the older adult is matched by a growing number of real and perceived barriers Adherence The determinants of participation in physical activity can be categorised as:- Personal characteristics and attributes Environmental factors Characteristics of the physical activity/exercise programme 8

9 Adherence Personal characteristics and attributes Health status Lower social and economic status Lower education Advancing years Adherence Environmental factors Both indoor & outdoor environments affect the ability of the older person to stay active. To ensure adherence to exercise it must be:- Accessible (lack of private or public transport) Available (location and timing of classes) Appropriate (safe, effective and meet needs) Affordable (realistic costs, discounts, incentives etc.) Adherence Characteristics of a physical activity/exercise programme. Does it :- Include social, mental as well as physical activity in the session? Include all health related components of physical fitness? Include interventions (advice) by other health professionals? Include an element of fun? 9

10 Motivation Motivation is the skill to persuade others to begin and persist with a certain course of action. Motivation Motivation is the art of persuading people to go to hell in a way that they look forward to the journey! Motivation How to motivate older adults to move towards health and well-being using an alternative approach: Multi-stations Functional fitness stations walks Mind, body, and spirit programmes 10

11 Motivation Multi Stations Set up in a circuit but designed to respond to the needs of individuals at different levels of wellness. e.g. social & mental activities, exercises to improve activities of daily living Functional Fitness Stations Set up in a course or circuit designed to improve some aspect of fitness e.g. strength & balance activities Motivation Walks This can take place indoors or outdoors (weather permitting). Have a plan prepared to include quizzes, treasure hunts, etc. Mind, body, spirit, programmes Yoga, Pilates, Stretching, Relaxation and use of integrative therapies such as Massage. Set Modest Achievable Realistic Targets Motivation Get Smart:- 11
