Table of Contents: TIPS FOR GOOD HEALTH If your family is anything like mine, you are busy making plans for the holiday season buying presents for everyone on your list, traveling to see loved ones near and far, preparing big meals and putting up decorations. It s truly a magical time of year! With all that s going on, however, it s easy to forget to take care of yourself and put your health first. That s why I invite you to take some time to look over this newsletter. It s our gift to you a reminder that healthy living should be a priority, now and all year long. At Kirby, we re focused on providing the tools and resources you need to live your best life. From preventive screenings to exercise programs to so much more, we re here for you and your family so you can give yourself the gift of good health. Happy holidays from all of us at Kirby! 4 GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF A HEALTHIER YOU Read on to learn simple tips and key preventive measures you can take to feel your best at every age and stage of life. Visit KirbyHealth.org to learn more, or call Kirby Medical Group at (217) to schedule an appointment. We re in network for most insurances (check with your insurance). IN YOUR 20s Learn how to cook. You ll eat healthier when you prepare your own meals, so make cooking part of your repertoire. Don t ignore your bones. You start to lose bone density in your 20s, and weightbearing exercise is the key to strong bones. Get the HPV vaccine. You have until age 26 to get vaccinated for HPV, an extremely common infection that may lead to cancer. Make flossing a habit. Poor oral hygiene puts you at risk for myriad health risks, including heart disease. So remember to floss every day! Slather on the sunscreen. Not only will you keep your skin looking young, but by using sunscreen you ll also significantly lower your risk of skin cancer. TIME TO BUTT OUT It s no secret that quitting smoking can be tough. Kirby has a smoking cessation program that connects smokers with resources and support to help you quit for good. IN YOUR 30s Manage your mental health. Your 30s are a busy time for family and career. Don t ignore feelings of anxiety and depression; make time for yourself. Save for retirement. Good financial health is part of your overall well-being. Talk to a financial advisor and reduce financial stress. Keep up on your screenings. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol as part of your regular checkups to stay on top of health concerns. Up your activity levels. As your metabolism changes in your 30s, it s easier to gain weight. Exercise regularly to keep your body fit. HEART HEALTH FOR LIFE Key screenings for cardiovascular health include: Blood pressure Cholesterol Blood glucose Weight and lifestyle If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of cardiovascular disease, your healthcare provider may also suggest a vascular screening, which is a painless ultrasound of your blood vessels to check for potential blockages. 4

5 IN YOUR 40s Make time for mammograms. Women with an average risk of breast cancer should begin having yearly mammograms by age 45, or as early as age 40. Stay flexible. Don t lose your flexibility in your middle years! Stretching every day will help prevent aches and pains as you age. Understand your family history. Know what runs in your family, and share that information with your healthcare provider. Stop smoking for good. If you haven t yet quit, now is the time to do so. Your body starts to heal itself as soon as you quit smoking. IN YOUR 50s Schedule your colonoscopy. Both men and women age 50 and older should make time for a life-saving colonoscopy. Get the flu vaccine. Guarding against the flu is important at every age, but especially as you get older. Keep an eye on your vision. Your vision can start to worsen in your 40s, so get your eyes checked regularly. MAMMOGRAMS MADE EASY Kirby provides state-of-the-art 3D Mammography in the Women s Imaging Center, our dedicated suite designed for women s comfort and privacy. 3D Mammography offers more precise imagery for earlier detection and detects more invasive types of cancer than regular digital mammography. Add more fiber to your diet. Digestion starts to slow in your 50s. Fiber keeps things flowing and may protect against colon polyps. Keep your muscles strong. Strength training helps maintain muscle mass, and it s good for your joints and bones too. GET YOUR COLONOSCOPY OVER WITH AND GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death, according to the Colon Cancer Coalition. Anyone can get colon cancer, and the risk increases after age 50. Kirby provides colonoscopies, right here close to home. And, if your screening shows no findings or risk factors, you won t need another one for 10 years. So you can get your colonoscopy and get on with life. 5

6 IN YOUR 60s Get your bone density tested. All women should have a painless bone density test to check for signs of osteoporosis. Guard against health concerns. Get vaccinated for pneumonia by age 65. If you ve had chicken pox, consider getting the shingles vaccine as well. Listen to your joints. As you age, joint problems can turn into chronic pain. Speak to your healthcare provider if your joint pain isn t going away. Check your balance. If you can t stand on one leg for at least 10 seconds, you need to improve your balance. JOINT TREATMENTS AND REPLACEMENT If joint pain is a problem, the Kirby orthopedics team is ready to get you moving again pain free. We offer treatments and surgery for everything from osteoarthritis to joint replacement. Plus, you ll have access to both physical and occupational therapy to ensure you have an improved quality of life for years to come. IN YOUR 70s AND BEYOND Join a club or two. Whether it s a travel program, an exercise group or volunteer opportunity, social interaction improves your mental health. Maintain your activity levels. Don t let your retirement years become your sedentary years. Perform regular cardiac, strength and flexibility exercise. Assess your home to prevent falls. It s a major concern as you age, so evaluate your home for fall dangers such as loose carpets and inadequate lighting. Let your wishes be known. Complete your Advanced Care Planning at Kirby Medical Group, which your family can use if a medical event leaves you unable to speak or make health decisions. Keep your mind sharp. In addition to a good diet and regular exercise, make learning part of your routine to keep your brain active. 6

Practice good eating from an early age. Swap screen time for physical activities. Make water the main drink option. Brush teeth twice a day. Remember to schedule annual doctor s visits.
