Anatomy uses a precise language to communicate specific areas and structures in a medical setting. Every year, some patients have perfectly healthy body parts removed or operated on because someone used incorrect terminology, causing confusion for the medical team. Learn your anatomical terminology well. Your future patients will thank you for it!

9 Superior: Inferior : Toward the head or upper part of the body Away from the head or toward the lower part of the body
10 Anterior: Toward or at the front of the body; (ventral) Posterior: Toward the back of the body; behind (dorsal)
11 Medial Toward or at the midline of the body Lateral Away from the midline of the body Intermediate Between medial and lateral structures
12 Proximal: Closer to the origin of the body part, or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk Distal: Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
13 Checking for Understanding 1. The heart is to the lungs. 2. The thumb is to the wrist joint. 3. The kneecap (patella) is to the ankle joint.

16 The body is often sectioned (cut) along a flat surface called a plane. The most common body planes are sagittal, frontal and transverse which are at right angles to each other.
17 The frontal plane divides the body into anterior and posterior sections Also called a coronal when referencing the head.
18 A transverse plane runs horizontally and divides the body into superior and inferior sections. Transverse sections are also called cross sections.
19 The sagittal plane lies vertically and divides the body into right and left parts. The sagittal plane lies exactly at midline and is also referred to as the median or midsagittal plane.

21 3. Zoe runs up the stairs to science class. She is moving through the body plane. 4. Ernie arrives on time to science class and shakes Ms. Fine s hand. This handshake is moving through the plane. 5. Keith is seated in his assigned seat and rotates in his seat to get out his ipad from his backpack. This rotation is movement through the plane. 6. Craig is playing with his 4 year old nephew Joshua. Craig puts his arms out pretending he is an airplane and runs around the apartment. Joshua is so excited that he pretends to be an airplane too. Craig and Joshua s arms are moving through the body plane.
