3 What is Sports Medicine? The field of medicine concerned with injuries sustained in athletic endeavors, including their prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

6 What is a Team Physician? An unrestricted medical license and be an M.D. or D.O. who is responsible for treating and coordinating the medical care of athletic team members. Provide for the well-being of individual athletes -- enabling each to realize his/her full potential. Possess special proficiency in the care of musculoskeletal injuries and medical conditions encountered in sports. Actively integrate medical expertise with other health care providers, including medical specialists, athletic trainers, and allied health professionals. Assume responsibility within the team structure for making medical decisions that affect the athlete's safe participation. source: Team Physician Consensus Statement
7 What is an Athletic Trainer? Health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents. source:

12 RHS Mission Statement To enhance the overall welfare of the competitive student athlete through: the application of scientific injury prevention protocols and re-injury prevention programs, assist with injury/illness assessment, facilitate return-to-play, coordinate and assist communication between athletes, parents, coaches and community health care providers.
13 ATS Activities Meet every 2-4 months Development of H.S. guidelines/manual On site training/drills: Spine boarding/ems interface Drill Coaches conference Coordinating communication
14 ATS H.S. Presence Based primarily on increased injury rates: Focus is towards FB, Soccer, Gymnastics, and Boys and Girls Basketball (Hockey is on-call due to their practices being off campus) An ATC is on-site for all Home events. An ATC travels with the Varsity FB team. Sideline Physician provided at all Home Varsity FB Games
15 ATS H.S. Presence The Training room is staffed M-F from 2:30pm until the end of practice ATC present for All High School practices, available for the Junior High on an as needed basis. An ATC is available for all teams during practice times. The coaching staff has contact information during practice times.

17 ATS Summary Injured athletes are to be evaluated by the school approved AT-C If an athlete is held from play, they should be evaluated by a physician and the RTP form completed Location of further therapy, physician evaluation, etc is at the discretion of the athlete/parents. Communication is our BIGGEST challenge!!!
18 What can parents/athletes do? Report injuries to the on site ATC Ask for the notes to be forwarded to the on-site ATC (keep us in the loop) Have the RTP form completed by a physician
