1 Round Oak Newsletter 26th January 2018 Brittain Lane, Warwick, CV34 6DX Website: roundoakschool.org.uk Telephone: Edited by: Jason Cox & Ashwin Rai (Bureau) DIARY DATES 5 th & 6 th February School Photographs th February National Grid Inspiration Week 16th February Oliver Twist 16th February End of Half Term 26th February Start of Half Term 26 th February School Tour for prospective parents 14 th -16 th March Pioneer Residential 29th March End of term 16th April Start of Spring Term Hello Round Oakers, Third week in to the new term and it is great to see how happy the students are to be back into the swing of life at Round Oak. Last Friday in our Assembly we celebrated Burns Night with the arrival of a genuine Scottish Piper to the school. The students thoroughly enjoyed watching Piper Paul s performance in the school yard and many joined in with impromptu Scottish dancing. It was fun to join in and watch everyone s efforts. The students were great. The staff well we tried. 7th May Bank Holiday Monday 25th May End of Half Term 4th June Teacher Training Day 5 th June Back to School 20 th July End of Summer Term I was also impressed by how much the students already knew about Scotland s National Poet and the big feast that is haggis, neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes). We also looked at how haggis was made and I thought I got through this ok for a vegetarian. Have a great week everyone. Page 1 of 10 David

2 New Year Resolutions New Year's is the time when many people traditionally make resolutions to break bad habits or start good ones. But this year is full of so many opportunities for success, that there s no reason why you can t completely own it and make it your best year EVER so here are my fun facts about New Year resolutions you haven t heard about. On average, about 45% of Americans consistently make a resolution for the New Year. Every year over 1 MILLION people gather in Times Square, NY to watch the famous ball drop to ring in the New Year, welcome in their resolutions but a whopping 1 BILLION people are estimated to watch it on television! The most common resolution made is to increase the amount of exercise that one gets (it is estimated that 37% of resolutions are this one!) Unfortunately, about 22% of resolutions fail after about a week, 40% after a month, 50% after 3 months, and 60% after 6 months. Not you you re in it to win it! Tradition says that the more leafy greens a person eats on New Year s Day signifies prosperity that is to come for them. Americans alone drink an estimated 360 MILLION bottles of champagne which is ironic considering that cutting back on alcohol consumption is consistently the second most popular resolution made. Around 38% of people claim to NEVER make a resolution. Of those achieving their resolutions, about 40% were successful on the first try. The rest took multiple attempts with as much as 17% taking over 6 tries. The number one reason for failed resolutions? Lack of a clear goal. Page 2 of 10

3 To maintain a basic level of health, children aged 5 to 18 need to do: At least 60 minutes of physical activity every day this should range from moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous activity, such as running and tennis On three days a week, these activities should involve exercises for strong muscles, such as push-ups, and exercises for strong bones, such as jumping and running Many vigorous activities can help you build strong muscles and bones, including anything involving running and jumping, such as gymnastics, martial arts and football. Children and young people should reduce the time they spend sitting watching TV, playing computer games and travelling by car when they could walk or cycle instead. Examples of activities that require moderate effort for most young people include: walking to school playing in the playground riding a scooter skateboarding rollerblading walking the dog cycling on level ground or ground with few hills Try the aerobic workout videos in the NHS Fitness Studio. 5 Hello Everyone, Have you ever heard the saying You are what you eat. This saying means that it is important to eat good foods so that you are fit and healthy. But you can make small healthy choices; in fact making small changes can make a massive difference to your health and the way you feel. So what small changes could you make in your daily diet and routines? Here are some that may help: 1. Eat one extra piece of fruit or vegetable a day 2. Choose foods that have a low salt content 3. Eat less sugary foods 4. Drink more water 5. Get out in the fresh air at least once a day 6. Try and do 30 minutes exercise a day 7. Drink less tea and coffee 8. Go to bed at a reasonable time so you have 8 hours sleep a night Eating lots of salt, sugar and fattening foods are bad for the body and could make it work less effectively. Just like if you put the wrong type of fuel in a car it won t run as well. Why not take a minute to think about how healthy you are and draw the foods you eat on the outline on the next page.
