4 1 Approach and methodology 1.1 Sample The 2011 MSD Migraine Survey was carried out by StollzNow Research using a quantitative permission-based online panel of 507 Australian adults aged 18 to 60 years who are suffer from migraine headaches. Research participants receive a reward for completing the survey. This sample size gives a confidence level of ± 4.3% at the 95% confidence level. Inclusion in the survey required answers to three questions. In the first question research participants must select severe headache/migraine. If eight or more medical conditions are selected they are excluded from the survey. This second termination is designed to exclude people who simply tick every box to try to be included in the survey. Which of these medical conditions do you suffer from? - Severe headache/migraine - Diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) - Weight problems / overweight - Depression - Asthma - Heart problems - High blood pressure - Psoriasis - Epilepsy - Colitis - Thyroid problems - Irritable Bowel Disease - Uveitis - Arthritis - None of these In the second question research participants are required to have any three or more symptoms. Which of these are symptoms of your severe headache? - Painful persistent headache Migraine 2011 Page 2
5 - Nausea - Vomiting - Sensitivity to light - Sensitivity to sound - Blurred vision - Sensitivity to smell / odours - Pain on one side of the head - Numbness/weakness - Speech problems - None of these Finally research participants need to answer yes the either of the first two of the following responses. Non-diagnosed migraine suffers are included in the survey. Do you feel that you suffer from migraine headaches? - Yes, I have been diagnosed by a doctor or other medical professional as having migraine headache - Yes, but I have not been diagnosed as having migraine headaches - My headaches are not migraines [EXCLUDED] Migraine 2011 Page 3
