Otorhinolaryngology has a very rich history, with important associates and personalities in the history of medicine.it was separated from surgery and internal diseases in the second half ofthe 19th century. Rhinology is one of the youngest fields in medicine. Our goal is to condense and illuminate the most challenging of the vast amount of information on the journey of evolution of Rhinology 2
3
Samhita was the earliest surgeon to describe rhinoplasty and other plastic surgical operations. 4
4/10/2013 In the V century B.C Hippocrate's texts j He reflected the interest in nasal injuries. described therapeutic methods for nasal lesions from the use of bandages and braces made of olive tree branches all the way to nasal bone and cartilage reconstructions. Leonardo da Vinci drew the nasal conchae and the paranasal sinuses, in However, these drawings were only found in 1901, in Milan. 5
In the era of Arabian Medicine,. Abulcasis (al zahrawi) ( A.D.), the greatest of the Arab surgeons used cautery and pulled the nasal polyp forward with a hook, cut through the pedicle with scissors and then washed the nasal cavity with vinegar. Painful and dangerous. 6
In England 1536, Highmore nathaniel, described the maxillary sinus, and for a long time such structure was known as the Highmore's antrum 7
Conrad Victor Schneider ( ) described dnasal secretion and not as originating from the cranial cavity?. Quelmaltz in 1750 published a treatise on the deviations of the nasal septum, he considered to be pressure upon the nose in difficult labor. The first description of rhinoscopy was published in 1861 in the Warsaw. Antoni Jurasz 1887 was the first in Europe to perform natural frontal sinus catheterization. studies on sectional and surgical anatomy, creating the specialty of rhinology and leading into our modern concepts of diagnosis and therapy of nasal and paranasal sinus diseases. 8
9
In USA 1893, Caldwell published his method, which consisted in opening the sinus through the canine fossa, removing the mucosal membrane and opening the lateral wall of the inferior meatus. Luc, in Paris 1897, reported his own method, which was practically. The decades witnessing the birth of rhinology Names like ; Onodi, Hajek and many others are closely linked with this creative period. 10
Rhinology also enjoyed a major power forward, especially in the areas of diagnosis and surgery when endoscopy was created, Philipp Bozzini Germany, beginning of 19th century. The idea of transmitting images through flexible glass fibers, invented by John Baird in These ideas influenced Harold Hopkins, who invented scopes in In the middle of the century, the microscope started to be used also in nasal surgeries, which brought about major progress to the surgical technique. 11
The use of new technologies caused an advance in endoscopic techniques, especially with the development in 1954 of the optic fiber endoscopes by Fiberoptic Company. A key for the development of knowledge to understanding the anatomy, physiology and pathology of paranasal sinuses is attributed to professor Walter Messerklinger and his successor, H. Stammberger, from Austria. 12
Wolfgang Draf was a notable man in ENT, major participant in the popularization of the use of modern endoscopy in nasosinusal surgeries. 13
The most notable advance in the last 25 years has been the development of less invasive endoscopic surgical procedures. David idkennedy, is credited d with pioneering endoscopic sinus surgery in the United States. who coined the phrase "functional endoscopic sinus surgery" or "FESS" to highlight the goal of the procedure to open nasal passages to improve drainage while maintaining normal nasal function. Another factor that brought about great interest in rhinology The introduction of Rhinoplasties, a work carried out by the American Academy of Reconstructive and Facial Plastic Surgery. This brought to otorhinolaryngologists a playing filed that before belonged only to plastic surgeons. Dr COTTLE,USA 1944, developed the first seminar or course dedicated to the anatomy, aesthetic aspects 14
Rhinology was restricted to the correction of nasal septum deviations, fractures, removal of nasal polyps and maxillary sinus flushing through h the canine fossa. 15
however, some physicians remained concerned in this area and developed surgical techniques, which had the advantage of incorporating technology in endoscopy, radiology, microsurgery and the use of information technology. 16
