But if patients who have been taking beta blockers suenly stop taking them, they can have heart problems such as a fast heart beat. For these patients, staying on beta blockers before an after surgery makes it less likely that they will have heart problems. Graph 4 of 12 Surgery patients who were given an antibiotic at the right time (within one hour before surgery) to help prevent infection The rates isplaye in this graph are from ata reporte for ischarges April 2010 through March represents the top 10% of hospitals nationwie. Taking these antibiotics for more than 24 hours after routine surgery is usually not necessary. Top hospitals achieve a 99% rate or better. Even if heart surgery patients o not have iabetes, keeping their bloo sugar uner goo control after surgery lowers the risk of infection an other problems. ""Uner goo control"" means their bloo sugar shoul be 200 mg/l or less when checke first thing in the morning. Infections are angerous for patients, cause longer hospital stays, an increase costs. This shows the percent of surgery patients whose urinary catheters were remove on the first or secon ay after surgery. Research shows that most surgery patients shoul have their urinary catheters remove within 2 ays after surgery to help prevent infection. Graph 10 of 12 Patients having surgery who were actively warme in the operating room or whose boy temperature was near normal by the en of surgery. The rates isplaye in this graph are from ata reporte for ischarges April 2010 through March represents the top 10% of hospitals nationwie. Top hospitals achieve a rate or better. Hospitals can prevent surgical woun infections an other complications by keeping the patient s boy temperature near normal uring surgery. Meical research has shown that patients whose boy temperatures rop uring surgery have a greater risk of infection an their wouns may not heal as quickly. Hospital staff shoul make sure that patients are actively warme uring an immeiately after surgery to prevent rops in boy temperature. This measure shows the percent of patients whose boy temperature was normal or near normal uring the time perio 15 minutes before the en of surgery to 30 minutes after anesthesia ene. Top hospitals achieve a rate or better. Certain surgeries increase the risk that the patient will evelop a bloo clot (venous thromboembolism). When patients stay still for a long time after some types of surgery, they are more likely to evelop a bloo clot in the veins of the legs, thighs, or pelvis. A bloo clot slows own the flow of bloo, causing swelling, reness, an pain. A bloo clot can also break off an travel to other parts of the boy. If the bloo clot gets into the lung, it is a serious problem that can cause eath. To help prevent bloo clots from forming after surgery, octors can orer treatments to be use just before or after the surgery. These inclue bloo thinning meications, elastic support stockings, or mechanical air stockings that help with bloo flow in the legs.
