1 Trinity Mother Frances Orthopedics and Sports Medicine With the help of your doctor, you have made the decision to have surgery. = APPOINTMENT PROCESS INFORMATION = You might need several different appointments before you are ready for surgery. The surgery schedulers will try to make these appointments on the same day but, occasionally, it might be necessary to be seen on separate days. Additional appointments might include: -- A history and physical exam that will be done before your surgery by the PASS (Pre-Admission Surgical Screening) Department. --If you take Coumadin (warfarin), the dose may need to be adjusted before your surgery. Instructions regarding this will be provided to you by the PASS Department. If you have an insulin pump they will also provide you with instructions regarding this. Surgical consents can only be signed by a custodial parent or legal guardian for a child less than 17 years of age or any patient who has a custodial guardian. If this applies, bring the legal papers documenting your authority to sign for your child to the visit. These papers may also be needed at the time of the procedure or surgery. -- Lab work or other tests. Appointment(s) after your surgery will be with either a surgeon or a physician assistant. The type of surgery you have will determine whether more than one appointment is needed. =
2 IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOUR SURGERY = If you will need FMLA, short term disability, work release &/or other paperwork from your employer, insurance, loan &/or credit card companies for your surgery, please bring those to your postoperative appointment. Sometimes those forms take several days to be mailed in and usually are not completed at the time of the visit. Please allow ample time for processing by your doctor. -- You must include a signed release giving Trinic Clinic permission to release information about your health. The release form is normally provided to you at your first clinic visit and is kept on file with your chart. -- Crutches and walkers can be rented from businesses such as: Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreen pharmacies. -- If necessary, wheelchairs can be rented from. TWO WEEKS BEFORE YOUR SURGERY -Fake (acrylic) nails MUST be removed from the entire hand having surgery. If these are not removed the case will be CANCELLED. This is because there are numerous studies showing a much higher infection rate that are hard to treat in hands/fingers with fake nails. They cannot be sterilized for surgery. Continue taking your routine medications until the day of your surgery. You will be given specific instructions at your history and physical if any of your medications have special preoperative instructions. *It is especially important that you do NOT stop taking your blood pressure medication. Please take whatever your normal dose of blood pressure medication is with sips of water on the day of surgery. You may continue your prescription pain medications. You MAY take Tylenol (acetaminophen) prior to your surgery. STOP taking any herbal medicines, supplements, weight loss products, or vitamins (including energy and vitamin drinks). These may increase the risk of bleeding or interact with anesthesia. STOP at least days prior to surgery--non-steroidal Anti-
3 Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) or any medicine that has an NSAID in the list of ingredients: ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin ), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn ), meloxicam (Mobic ), nabumetone (Relafen ), sulindac (Clinoril ), tolmetin (Tolectin ), etodolac (Lodine ). A full list of these types of medications that must be stopped are listed separately. STOP taking all products containing Aspirin if you occasionally take it for arthritis, headache, pain or inflammation. Check the medicines list of ingredients. HOWEVER, if you take aspirin routinely or daily, DO NOT STOP the aspirin. Discuss using aspirin with the provider who does your pre-op physical. If you take: Aggrenox (dipyridamole plus aspirin), Arixtra (fondaparinux), Avastin (bevacizumab), Lovenox (enoxaparin), Plavix (clopidogrel), Pletal (cilastazol), Ticlid (ticlopidine), or Trental (pentoxifylline), have a discussion with the provider who does the history and physical exam before your surgery to see adjustments to the dose are necessary. If you have C-PAP machine, the Anesthesia Department asks that you use it for the 2 weeks before your surgery. Because your mask fits you best, make arrangements to take it and the C-PAP machine with you to surgery WHERE TO CALL IF: -- You have additional questions or concerns, call the PASS Department at (903) , Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- You need to reschedule your surgery, call Trinity Clinic Orthopedics at (903)
