2 Overview and Target Audience Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital defect and has the highest mortality of any congenital defect within the first year of life. Recognizing CHD before birth can improve both prenatal and postnatal outcomes. Certain pregnancies are known to be at high risk for CHD, yet most fetal cardiac defects occur in low risk pregnancies. Thus, one way to improve the outcome of fetal CHD is to improve prenatal detection of CHD in both high and lowrisk pregnancies. The Fetal Echo Preceptorship Program is a short apprenticeship of fetal echocardiography divided into lectures describing the evaluation of structural and functional cardiac anomalies and arrhythmias, demonstrations of scanning technique, and interactive case studies. The target audience is health care providers interested in improving their skills in the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of fetal cardiac anomalies including: Obstetrical sonographers and fetal echocardiography sonographers, obstetrical care providers, and fetal cardiologists. Educational Objectives Identify components of the basic fetal echocardiogram Describe the use of Doppler in the fetal cardiac evaluation Identify abnormal pulsed and color Doppler findings Improve ultrasound image optimization Interpret normal and abnormal fetal echocardiograms Recognize and describe the normal 3 vessel view Describe how to identify ductal dependent fetal cardiac anomalies Describe different types of pulmonary and systemic venous anomalies Define the techniques to evaluate fetal rhythm Continuing Education Credits Medical: Children s Hospital Colorado is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Lisa W. Howley, MD Co-Director of Perinatal Cardiology, Children s Hospital Colorado Heart Institute and the Colorado Fetal Care Center Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine After completing her cardiology fellowship, Dr. Howley spent a year with Dr. Lisa Hornberger honing her skill and expertise in Fetal Cardiology. Dr. Howley s areas of expertise in fetal cardiology includes assessment of cardiac function in Twin to Twin Transfusion syndrome, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and non-cardiac defects causing heart failure. She is in charge of intraoperative cardiac monitoring during open fetal surgery and EXIT procedures. Dawn Park, BS, RDCS, RDMS Pediatric and Fetal Cardiac Sonographer Heart Institute, Children s Hospital Colorado Colorado Fetal Care Center Shane Reeves, MD Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology - Maternal Fetal Medicine Medical Director, Prenatal Diagnostics and Genetics, the Colorado Fetal Care Center Fellowship Director of Maternal Fetal Health, The University of Colorado School of Medicine Dr. Reeves has been practicing maternal fetal medicine since His expertise includes fetal growth restriction, history of preterm delivery, fetal anomalies, and maternal medical disorders. Guest Faculty Dennis has worked for Bill Rashkind at Children s Hospital of Philadelphia developing cath lab diagnostic and treatment of CHD techniques. He s also developed early ultrasound techniques from A-mode to M-mode to B-mode or 2 dimensional ultrasound as an adjunct to the cath lab. He has also worked in the animal research lab with Rashkind and L Henry Edmonds in early balloon dilation techniques and closure of ASD, VSD and PDAs and newborn heart surgery and premie ductus arteriosus surgery and pulmonary hypertension. Additionally, he has worked with Victoria Vetter in developing an electrophysiology lab. He partnered with Bill Norwood in the OR, and sent by him to teach fetal heart ultrasound to Ob/Gyn offices and sonographers. He partners with Project Hope around the world in training for fetal and pediatric cardiology/ cardiovascular surgery. He has helped train many fellows in pediatric cardiology and surgery, maternal fetal medicine, cath lab and echo/ultrasound. Ms. Park began her ultrasound career in 2000 and joined Children s Hospital Colorado in She is registered in adult echocardiography, pediatric echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, and abdominal ultrasound. Ms. Park received her fetal echo training at Children s Hospital Colorado under the tutelage of Dr. Adel Younoszai and Dr. Lisa Howley. She has extensive experience with the prenatal evaluation of complex congenital heart disease and the cardiac evaluation in Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS).

4 Agenda DAY 1: The first day is devoted to learning the protocol for fetal cardiac evaluation. Lectures will concentrate on indications for fetal echocardiography and the complete evaluation of the normal and abnormal fetal heart.
