The course will utilize an open-book and open discussion problemsolving format. The course grade will be based on 3 take home open-book and opendiscussion problem sets and 2 open-note in-class examinations. The emphasis will be on self-

3 and group-learning and problem solving, rather than memorization of facts. COURSE OBJECTIVES Students will learn the common pathophysiologic mechanisms and manifestations of to cardiac diseases, fluid and electrolyte disorders, circulatory shock, and respiratory diseases in both small and large animal species. Students will learn the principles of cardiopulmonary diagnostic methodologies and apply these to the diagnosis of common cardiac and respiratory diseases of animals. Students will learn the principles of cardiopulmonary therapies and be able to formulate rationale therapies for cardiopulmonary disorders. Course Materials: Printed notes for the course are available through the Dean s Office. Additional material including slide presentations and example problem sets are available for selected topics and lectures on the VM747 RamCT web site. RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS Tilley LP, Smith FWK, Oyama M, Sleeper MM (eds). Manual of Canine and Feline Cardiology, 4 th ed, Saunders Elsevier, St. Louis, 2008 King L. (ed) Textbook of Respiratory Disease in Dogs and Cats, 2003 Saunders, West JB. Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials, 9th Edition (September 21, 2011); Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. COURSE GRADE Students are bound by the CVMBS PVM Student Honor Code to follow the problem set and examination guidelines for this course. Problem Sets 1. Problem set due dates are indicated on course schedule. There will be 3 problem sets worth 50 points each for a total of 150 points. 2. Problem sets are open-discussion between students. Students may discuss questions with each other, but each student must turn in a separate written answer. While discussion of problems between students is desirable and encouraged, students ultimately must decide what is correct and are responsible for their own answers. Faculty, clinicians, students from other classes, or any individual outside the student s own PVM class should NOT be consulted for answers. 3. A key for each problem set will be posted soon after they are collected. Individual scores for each problem set will be posted on the course Web site as soon as possible. Review sessions to discuss answers to problems are scheduled for each problem set. 4. Problem set material may NOT be copied or reproduced in any way. All materials related to the problem sets must be turned in at the end of the course.

4 Examinations 1. There will be 2 examinations, a midterm and a final exam. Each exam will be worth 150 points. Midterm exam will cover Cardiac Diseases and Fluid & Electrolyte Disorders. The final exam will cover Circulatory Shock, Respiratory Diseases & LA Infectious Myopathies. 2. Exams will be in-class and open-note, but closed to discussion between students. 3. Supplemental materials may be handed out prior to examinations to aid with preparation for the examination. These materials are open for discussion between students. Supplemental materials for the exams may NOT be duplicated in any way and original materials must be returned at the time of the examination. Point Distribution Problem Sets (3 x 50 pts each) 150 pts Midterm Exam (Cardiac Disease, Fluid Disorders & Circulatory Shock) 150 pts Final Examination (Pulmonary Pathophysiology, Respiratory Disease, Infectious 150 pts Myopathies) TOTAL 450 pts Passing Grade = 315 points (70%) or greater
