1 Presented by: Ohio State s Center for Women s Health, Women s Cardiovascular Health Advisory Council and the Heart and Vascular Center. 3rd annual Women s Cardiovascular Conference: Wednesday, Sept. 14 The Blackwell 2110 Tuttle Park Place Columbus, Ohio 43210

2 3rd Annual Women s Cardiovascular Conference: Wednesday, Sept. 14 Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in women in the U.S.A., yet many physicians are unaware of this. Cardiovascular disease has moved beyond the concept of being a man s disease, yet women tend to overlook its importance and it often remains in the shadows of breast cancer. The clinical presentation, diagnostic testing and treatment options differ between the genders, as well as the biology of disease. Despite the increased focus on women s heart disease in recent years, females with chest pain are frequently under-diagnosed and under-treated compared to their male counterparts. Recent data demonstrates there are gender differences that go beyond atherosclerosis, such as heart failure. This conference will discuss the latest studies involving diagnostic and treatment options for cardiovascular diseases in women as well as current preventative guidelines. We will address the female heart in respect to angina, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, valvular heart disease and pregnancy. There are a limited number of courses that specifically address women s cardiovascular health. In addition, there is a continued debate regarding the benefits and risks associated with postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). New data from 2011 again has raised questions regarding the role of HRT. This conference will also address the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy, in postmenopausal women, in terms of heart disease prevention and other benefits. Experts will discuss in a debate-like format the benefits and risks associated with HRT, based on the most recent literature and trials. The audience will benefit by learning the latest studies regarding cardiovascular disease in women. It will help reiterate the fact that the female is different. The conference will include local and national speakers trained in various aspects of cardiovascular health. The participants will have access to the speakers during the panel discussion for questions that may arise as well as have access to OSU Women s Cardiovascular Health clinic for future questions or patients. As a result of this educational activity, participants will be able: To review the latest information regarding angina and its treatment in women. To discuss the appropriate stress testing options for women. To explain the utility of cardiac MRI in women. To recall the management of high cardiac risk women during pregnancy. To evaluate aortic stenosis in women, including novel nonsurgical techniques. To review the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in women. To describe the treatment of heart failure in women using gender specific data. To update the latest guidelines for prevention of cardiovascular disease in women. To discuss the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women, in terms of heart disease prevention.

3 Guest The Ohio Faculty State University Medical Center Faculty Nanette *Course Wenger, planning MD committee Guest Faculty Nanette Wenger, MD Professor, Medicine Division of Cardiology Emory School of Medicine Consultant to the Emory Heart & Vascular Center Atlanta, Georgia Nanette Wenger, MD, dedication to reducing women s disability and death from cardiovascular disease has made her one of the country s mostrespected experts on coronary heart disease in women. In 2009, the women s health pioneer and renowned cardiologist received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology. She is a trailblazer and icon in the field of cardiology as author and co-author of more than 1,300 scientific and review articles and book chapters. Although Dr. Wenger has earned dozens of awards in her celebrated career, perhaps her greatest professional achievement, and the one that has brought her international recognition, was changing a major paradigm in cardiology: the assumption that heart disease affects only men. A half a century ago heart disease was thought of as a man s disease. Today, thanks to the pioneering clinical and research efforts of Dr. Wenger, it is known that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in the United States accounting for 38 percent of all female deaths, more mortality than all forms of cancers combined.
